N64 to computer monitor

I think you need a converter... I've read in the eBay ads that this won't be able to output your N64 RCA signals to VGA... life isn't that simple =p

the chips to do conversion are so small now they can put them in a cable, it probably works fine.

I don't think so.

N64 to PC monitor
Your taking interlaced video and trying to display it on a PC monitor. It usually doesn't work. Most PC monitors only do progressive video and require at least a line doubler to work.

Try something like the Adaptec GameBridge which is RCA/S-Cable to USB (You need a PC). They are less the $20. Or get a transcoder or line doubler aka VGA box they are also cheap.

I would just hit up the Gamebridge, it's popular, available, cheap, and it works as well as it should (some people have some issues with it, many other users have none)

It's a little interface that on one end you plug in your classic Yellow, White, and Red cables and the other end is USB - you install some software and then you can play N64 (or whatever else uses RCA) in a window or fullscreen in Windows.

EDIT: damn someone beat me to the punch

I don't think the adapter in the original post will work to connect composite or s-video sources to a VGA monitor. It's for converting a VGA source to a composite or s-video display (connecting your laptop to your TV like the ad says.) I doubt the circuitry does the reverse conversion necessary.

thanks, I'll get the game bridge I read somewhere else that the adapter I originally posted won't work the way I want it to.

Most adapters only work one way unless they specifically say that they work both ways. When buying any adapter always assume that it will only go one way. Another thing that you need to remember is that the horizontal and vertical refresh rates that come from the device need to be compatible with your monitor. I got this to connect my PS2 to my VGA monitor but it didn't work because my monitor didn't support the horizontal and vertical refresh rates that the PS2 outputs. Fortunately I got it for cheap and sold it only for a small loss.
