Well I am trying to decide if its the right decision for me or not, and well I don't know yet and I don't know if anyone else knows either. As I am currently in the design / analysis portion of my PC, and have not bought it.

I mean yes the P35 is already here and we know its great, but how well will the X38 perform and what makes it better? Or should I hold out for the 780i or whatever is planned on that route?

I plan on upgrading to the Yorkfield Q6600 when it's release, but for now I am thinking an E6750 will be sufficient enough. That is unless I plan on buying my system later.

Hi BaGGy!
This late into the game, unless you have a pressing need (motherboard just died, for example) it would be better to hold off for a few weeks at least, and best until November if you can bear it. In a few weeks we'll begin to receive performance reports concerning X38, and there are bound to be numerous head to head comparisons with the P35 boards. Hold off until November and that'll all happen again, only this time against the new Nvidia chipset. A little more than two months and you'll have a clear idea what all of your Intel-motherboard options are, all laid out in front of you. And if X38 is indeed the winner, then the boards based on it will have ironed out many bios bugs. Perhaps even an early chipset revision if we're lucky. Add to that the news this week that Intel's own X38 enthusiast board Bonetrail (or 'Bone dat Tail', as we call it in Detroit) is going to be delayed until November (ostensibly for board revisions, but I'm guessing to pee on nvidia's launch). Lot's of reasons to wait, if your situation allows.

P.S. November also is slated to hold the launch of AMD's desktop offerings, if you are considering, umm... crossing the street.

Awesome thanks for the reply, and I do have time to wait. I just need to do more research, because around that time will be the release of the Yorkfield Q6600 if I remember correctly and I hope it's not super spendy. I am just hoping to build myself a system that will last me the next 4 or 5 years. I guess if I wait til November I will also get to see the release of the series 9 cards from Nvidia, and maybe the series 8 will be tons cheaper.

Overall, don't wait for things in the computer world. If you need a system now, buy it. If you don't, then wait for as long as possible as something big will be coming. Yes I realize this is contradicting to the first post, but it's true.

Since you can wait though, go for it. As of right now X38 does not seem to offer anything really big, it sounds like it has potential in the tweaking and overclocking arena...but that's not confirmed yet.

Exactly! Around that time you'll have a plethora (remember that word from primary school English? Ooh, I get a star! Goody, goody!) of choices. Especially if you want a keeper rig, it'll be wise to wait. Just to add a monkey wrench into your plans, if you're planning for four years down the line, keep an eye on DDR3's development as you get closer to build time. I read today that DDR3 prices will drop when Intel begins introducing it as a required technology for its mobile platforms next year.

I dunno if DDR3 is going to go mainstream that quickly..unless BaGGy is researching for his build next year...which isn't normally a good idea unless you're just a hardware freak.

..but yeah, I don't think DDR3 will be a viable choice in November/December yet. Maybe one of those DDR2/DDR3 boards would be handy in this case.

Probably not, but it is developing faster than anyone had anticipated, so we'll have to see. I do know there's an MSI X38 board that supports two DDR2/four DDR3. As for me, I'm eyeing the IX38 QuadGT: That's their X38 + DDR2 board, with the lineage of the AB9 QuadGT and the IP35 Pro, what looks to be 5-phase digital power management, and the tried and true placement, it should be a sweet board as long as no one at Abit goes and snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.

aproximately when is the abit Quad gt x38 going to be released here in the States?

Imo the real choices are p35 or x38. After having just about every version of nforce I'm no longer interested in what they have to offer. Imo nvidia boards almost always end up having quality issues and/or software issues, no matter how great their hyped feature set.

Nvidia boards are like a beautiful woman that you lust after for months, then when you finaly get her you find out she's a real bitch and half of her advertised features have virtualy no software support and what support they do have sucks.

I don't know, a beautiful woman who sucks is aces in my book! :D

OK, OK... on to business: I agree with you entirely. They are always falling short before they reach their potential. To continue the beautiful woman analogy, she always has to go wee in the middle of the act.

these things come around daily, in the technology world. you CAN play the waiting game, as days pass, technology upgrades, the prices go up for the new, prices goes down for the old. as for my input on this...I think i might just wait and see how the x38 comes out the next month, since I don't absolutely need a new motherboard urgently. Based on the past, for every new chipset the comes out, there will always be upgrades afterwards, and bug fixes will come. I think waiting can be quite beneficial, if I didn't read about the x38, I would've purchased a P35 board. To me I see it as a win win if you wait...once the x38 releases, I would think (i may be wrong), the P35s would be less expensive, and cheaper, the prices will drop. At the same time, if you wait the x38 may be something you'd be interested in. Either way, if you wait, you either benefit from saving a few bucks (maybe a lot) or benefit from a new upgrade in technology (maybe not quite as innovative...but around that ballpark).

Yup. I can't wait any longer, 2 weeks has been hell! Abit IP35 Pro from the egg on Wed. ;) Finally get a chance to use my uguru clock from the KV8 Pro!

good choice, i've been looking at that motherboard for a few weeks now.

How's the pro with Quads?

Good. Specs in my sig are at 1.33v actual Vcore, 1.365v in Bios. I'm kind of stuck at 3.1gHz, but that's my lack of OC'ing 'skillz', lack of time to give it a proper effort, and a wife whose mere presence can jinx any adjustment of a PC. Evil, I tells ya'... pure Evil! But the board is still stable despite her, which is a testament to the power of the IP35 Pro. I'd say get it, but the X38 will be out soon, and lord only knows what (upgrade) path that will lead us down.

I was trying to decide if I wanted to wait or go ahead and get a P35.

But as far as I've been able to tell the only note worthy feature that is of immediate use is the two 16X slots both having 16 lanes each (instead of 16/4 found on some P35 boards). But that isn't of use to me with my 8800GTX (see no plans of going to ATI anytime soon).

And I don't need PCIE 2.0 yet. So I can't think of any reason I should wait for X38. Though I still haven't gotten that P35 board yet because my P965 DS3 seems to be doing okay. But thinking about going with a high end P35 with the ICH9R SB for RAID and better chipset cooling, etc.

P965 is as good as the p35 from what ive read, xept the p35 would do better with quads when OC'ing. Im waiting for x38, its next week.. or within the month anyway so theres no need to rush. Plus im anticipating barcelona release, that means i would have the option to go AMD if even barca does deliver
