Regarding the July 22 price cuts

Nope. I'm not familiar with the specifics of the current Intel stuff, but I guess it'll have a thermal pad already applied to the heat sink, so you won't need to fiddle on with paste.

I like to take the pad off anyway and apply some decent thermal paste. In my experience the paste lasts a lot longer than the pads. On one cpu where I used the pad I took the cpu out of the socket one day and saw that the pad had pretty well completely melted away. That doesn't happen with paste. It might dry up over time though so should be re-applied and reseated after a year or two of use.

that is the price for 1000 OEM CPU's for a vendor to buy, NOT retail customers.

Sure, but how many do you think higher volume retailers like Newegg are going to be buying? Do you suppose there might be a larger price break when they commit to buying 10 times that number?

QFT. :)

The retail package will come with a perfectly adequate HS/Fan and will do you ok for some basic overclocking.

do some research before you make a suggestion like that.

q6600's create a lot of heat. while the stock cooler will be fine for stock clockspeed, i would not recommend overclocking on the stock cooler. you will find that it doesnt have a lot of head room.
retail HSF will be sufficient if you are not overclocking.
i recommend a Thermalright Ultra 120 if you plan to overclock at all.

i'm curious, where are the links to your research?

tickle_me_emo,

Unless your running a very cool ambient, air isn't going to cut it if you want to keep temps under 60/70c....that goes for stock speeds or even an OC at 3.0.

It can be done, but ambient MUST be low.

Sorry if this is lil off topic but when exactly does the QX6850 come out, or around what time? Around the corner or still some time?

N... no... no overclocking??? *hits with rolled up newspaper* Bad ray! Bad!

The main reason is the motherboard (DP35DP) I am getting is the only one I could find with all of the items I wanted. This motherboard cannot be overclocked.

.

What part of "basic overclocking" wasn't clear to you? Basic overclocking doesn't mean 3ghz out of his Q6600, just a couple of hundred Mhz

are you saying the stock cooler isn't good enough to keep that CPU cool at stock speed while the ambient temp is say.... 85F?

You have to remember Newegg is an outlet for ABS computers.

They already order these things in giant quantities, I dont expect the price will be lower than suggested......I also have to assume they have some stock they purchased at a higher margin that wont be sacrificed at the lower suggested prices.......it may be several days or a week until you see the 266 dollar price.

And.......the 22nd is Sunday.....so wont nobody be there to take the order anyway, just the computer.......glad I'm not there Monday sorting all this out.

Unfortunately, at that ambient temp, your going to have one hot chip under load, but that's up to you to decide how hot is too hot.

Once the price cuts occur, and many folks buy the quads, I believe your going to see the forums explode with those at high ambient and air cooling wondering why they can't keep their cpu under control at load....mark my words.

I'd like to have better info for you, but they just run so damn hot.

I always overclock on stock HSF and have no issues so long as you keep it to a moderate overclock. If it requires upping the voltage then I back down a bit as I don't want a hot running cpu. If I want my cpu to be faster than I will buy a faster stock cpu. Don't see the point in spending exorbitant amounts on cooling when for near the same money you could have just bought a faster cpu to begin with.

A friend of mine just bought a more exotic HSF and it doesn't even fit into the case he wanted to use it in. :p

I have worked for more then a few computer stores in my time, and going back more then a few years, the current stock/tray price paid on past orders is meaningless,Intel gives stores price protection. :)

what's up with the current price increases? supply and demand? newegg has the e4300 up to $130... it was just $117 a week ago

How often has that happened with Core2s? :p Look at the price of a Q6600 at 2.4Ghz and a QX6700 at 2.66Ghz for example... the Q6600 can be overclocked to 3Ghz w/ a $50 aircooler, not even a fraction of the cost of going with a much slower clcoked QX6700. Overclocking absolutely makes financial sense with this generation CPUs, theres no ifs, ands, or buts about it. :)

do you have a quad?
in the past stock coolers have been sufficient to overclock. from what i have been reading you're not going to get much out of the stock cooler in terms of overclocking.
A thermalright ultra 120 would set you back about 60 bucks and would be well worth the investment.

your logic for getting a faster CPU is fairly lacking. A q6600 will be 270 - 290 next week. Q6700 will be $530+. thats a $150 more.
you could get a much faster overclock out of a q6600 with an ultra 120 vs the clock speed fo a qx6700 that will cost nearly $100 more.
Even if you went with a watercooling system your still on par for price, but much faster clock speed than a qx6700. You can get a basic system for about 150-200 bucks.

i understand that watercooling is not for everyone, but its not that out of hand.

newegg has a dynamic pricing system, when lots of people buy the item, the price goes up

weird that everyone wants to buy them now, unless it's also based on supply and supply is going down and demand remains constant

I'm referring to the actual numbers. For example, is $113 referring to an OEM E4400 or a retail E4400.

Ah, I believe that was for the retail one a while back.

The price cuts are NOT to $266... that is the price for 1000 OEM CPU's for a vendor to buy, NOT retail customers. I would expect pricing of around $280-290 at most of our favorite stores like newegg/mwave. Personally, I hopped on the $299-shipped deal at frys.com that was going a few ago, and have my B3 SL9UM stepping Q6600 in hand already.

Quoted. I'll see you in 10 days ;)

Hate to bring it up, but it seems like the price drops won't get to the vendor prices (and why would they?).

Well, a number of retailers had them within a few dollars of $266 for a while, but they seem to have shot up pretty quickly, most likely due to supply issues.
