We see Windows based car PC mods all the time but when is the last time you saw a nice Linux-based car PC mod?

I created this page because, while there are plenty of CarPC (Car Computer, Carputer, whatever you prefer) installs out there, I could not find any well documented LINUX based setups. As you will see, with a little effort you can create a powerful (and useful) Car Computer.

When was the last time......

I think it was in the linux section of the www.mp3car.com forums. ;) They also have a mac section, but most of the better frontends are on Windows.

I think we killed their server.... I can't see anything on the timekiller.org site - "page cannot be displayed"

Word.

Windows has much nicer front ends. I remember a guy in our forums modding his GTO with a mac mini :)

I built my brother's CarPC for his WRX using RR as the frontend, but he is looking at getting a new car so it never went in.

microsoft should just team up with a pioneer or something to make a full blown PC/GPS unit.

Although i have the Pioneer AVIC-Z1, it is not really all that great.

I agree.

I recently got a Pioneer DVD head unit in my car, it is a great unit, and I have considered building an in car Media PC off the screen... a project for later :)

But having Linux in a car is really cool, I like the kind of things he is doing with the car too.
