Allright guys, here is the first installment of the [H]ard Gaming Awards! Our first category is graphics. Which game do you think really pushes the pixel to a whole different level?


Here our our nominations for Best Graphics:
Dirt
Doom 3
FEAR
Guild Wars
Half Life 2
Oblivion
Quake 4
 
Ummm ... why is Gears of War not on there? It looks better than any of the games on that list.

WoW is one of the most incredible game in term of art direction ,everything looks good ... and the world is massive.

I'm not surprised I was the one person who voted for Doom 3, and yes, Crysis is not out yet, but Doom 3, was at the time, and still is a amazing engine. Carmack is a fucking god, and that engine still stands the test of time.
 
Oblivion wins without breaking a sweat. No other game out there looks as good. Only Crysis and Bioshock should change that, in the near future.
 
Oblivion, definitely. Modded Oblivion, however, is leagues above the other games mentioned.

Far Cry isn't an option?

and I second the gears of war comment too!

Acutally consoles have the upper hand now IMHO.

Gears of War, Kameo, and Fight Night Round 3 all put out graphics quality that just doesn't exist in the PC graphics word.(ability arguments aside - there just is no software to compete)

I think Titan Quest has better graphics than any of those placed there as well.

Doom 3 looks like plastic
Quake4 (doom3 rehash)
Oblivion is good, but I'm not sure that I think it merits accolades for graphics -- there are other titles much better
Half Life 2 could be a contendor if everything didn't feel thin or flimsy - there's no real "thickness" in the game
Guild Wars does have the art! but best of class? Nah - I prefer WOW art personally
Fear - okay maybe the best of the above so far - but some of the character animations look like they are done on rails
Dirt - haven't played it on PC, but if it's like the xbox 360 version - why is it included? It has no better graphics than any other car game does it?
 
I pretty much picked most of the games people submitted from my other thread. I def think oblivion takes the cake but DiRT is pretty nice too.
 
This "contest" lacks definition. What do you mean by "graphics". Do you mean technical proficiency, realisticness, art style...?

Poor Quake 4, I thought it looked beautiful

Far Cry indeed SLAUGHTERS Oblivion... Frigging max everything on a 6800 DESTROYS oblivion at max everything IMO... it just looks nicer, and actually RUNS at max everything on oldish hardware :O

I fail to see how the 3-year-old Far Cry looks better than Oblivion; do you have any screenshots to prove me wrong?

Edit: I just saw Archaea's post and i still think Oblivion looks far better than Far Cry.

Not really. Stock oblivion, maybe, but certainly not when you start slapping the mods on there heavy.

Well then shit, lets get someone to mod FarCry.... Personally I think FarCry looks really nice running on my 7800GT.... and was a lot more fun ;)
 
Far Cry does not look better than Oblivion, lets not get carried away here. It does look great for how old it is though.
 
I thought Far Cry was pretty impressive, although my machine can't quite push it too well. But hey, for $10 off of Direct2Drive, you can't complain!

I do think Oblivion looks better.... it is an amazing game.
 
Far Cry in action looks prettier than the screenshots with HDR enabled and such. Oblivion looks the same in screenies as it does in action - draw distance is much better on far cry trees are better, scenary is better, water is better, the only thing better in oblivion is the characters and that's not saying much because oblivion characters get beat by many other games



And titan quest is in my opinion much better graphics than oblivion - here are a couple more links for comparison

You are out of your mind. Titan quest isn't even a contender, it is psuedo-top-down-3D. It is not even in the same league as Oblivion. Hate the game if you want to, but don't make ridiculous claims.

Okay, well I don't much like either of them.
I don't see how not being 'true' 3D instantly disqualifies a game. I agree that TQ doesn't look better than Oblivion, but a lot of 2D games still have brilliant graphics (Baldur's Gate 2 running at high res still looks nice IMO) - art direction is more important than use of the latest technology. I remember when magazines were saying how amazing the graphics were in Virtua Fighter - I thought it looked bloody horrible.

Half-Life 2 takes it for me because the textures and attention to detail are awesome. It all fits together beautifully. FarCry would be my other contender.
 
man, i dont know bout you guys but everquest 2 still has my vote for best graphics any day...that game on max is seksy:D
 
I agree, Far Cry is gorgeous. I think it does have better graphics then Oblivion and Oblivion has amazing graphics. Far Cry gets my vote for best PC graphics.

Going off topic, but best graphics overall on any platform would be Gears of War IMO.
 
I too fail to see how anyone can say Far Cry looks better than Oblivion. Far Cry does look good, even today, considering how old it is, but it's miles away from Oblivion's graphics. There's just no comparison. I recommend everyone to see a video of Oblivion @ 1920x1200 (or higher), with all settings maxed, then tell me if Far Cry looks better.

Oblivion is technically superior to Guild Wars but Guild Wars has them all beat in terms of art direction. I recently fired up guild wars on my new rig and with everything maxed at 1680x1050, its very impressive. It's also a hell of a lot smoother than Oblivion which is so clunky feeling even when its running well.
 
FarCry hands down...then comes oblivion..but why far cry isn't on the list i have no fucking idea but i am pissed :mad:

As others said, its damn sad that 3 year old game has better graphics then what is out there today. No wonder the same people are making Crysis that will take graphics to a whole new level.

Is there a reason why far cry is not on the list mods?
 
I really don't see how so many people think Far Cry tops Oblivion in the graphics sector; it just.... doesn't. But that's just my opinion, i guess.
 
Black & White 2 and Battle of The Gods take the cake for me
Amazing lvl of detail watching from the clouds or zooming in to see the bugs in a field
 
Oblivion has the "prettiest" graphics, but poor texture mapping.
 
If we where talking about art I would put wow right up at the top. I have played guild wars and it does look very good, but it is not unique at all. Everywhere you go in wow the world looks so unique, like nothing you have ever seen before. Get into outlands and visit Nagrand or Netherstorm and then argue with me.

I think PREY that uses the Doom3 engine has the best indoor lighting. And is definitely one of the pretties pixels out there.
 
I vote Far Cry! One of THE best games ever!! Both indoor and outdoor graphics looks absolutely beautiful. 2560x1600, 16x AF and 4X AA ofcourse..
