Sony in Hot Water with Church

I think the main thing that upset the C of E was the use of Manchester Cathedral for a gun based massacre inside the identifiable building. Over on this side of the pond in the UK, gun crime is still very very low. (i.e. we don't have the "right to bear arms or arm bears". Handguns are illegal.)

You need to check your facts again. UK's gun and violent crime rate is many times that of the US and has steadily increased after banning guns while the US rate has been in a steady decline since like 1930.

Yeah after they sue Sony. Sony wasn't planning on paying them one dime for featuring their church in the game. hehe

so what? It's a building. I can have the washington monument in a game if i want: The image of it is in public domain.

Funny.... I have provided tours of my church for free, and I am not aware of any other churches in my region that charge for church tours. So, I'm not sure that such a generalisation was in order.

As far as the legal and monetary aspects of this... Churches on the regional and corporate level perennially retain lawyers to deal with liabilities, so this isn't taking tithe money from charity or mission work. True Christians take no joy in litigation, so I believe any reason behind a potential lawsuit would be to protect the church's perception and mission.

I doubt this is a publicity stunt. If anyone were to use a recreation of my house in a game without my permission, I would be upset as well. but for those who didn't know me, they would probably think I had granted that permission. That is the crux of the case. By taking a public stand, the Church of England is making sure that people understand they were not condoning a video game's content through the use of a likeness of their facility.

Oh big fucking deal. It's a church. Pictures of it are everywhere. It's out in the public eye, so it's usable. Do you REALLY think that a bunch of gamers are going to care that the church is in there, or that those that MIGHT care would even play the game? It's not like it's on the front cover!

It's total BS on the church's part. I just thought they were better than this.

oh, and LOTS of churches charge for tours.

Manchester has a growing problem with kids picking up guns illegally cos they think they look "cool". So now the city is seeing pointless deaths from this. So the Manchester Cathedral has been doing a lot of work toward helping the community deal with this problem.

So of all cathedrals that Sony could of picked - by probably unlucky chance - they picked one that upset many more people due to the local gun crime problems. :)

Anyone remember when Eidos upset the Sikhs by putting one of their famous temples into Hitman 2? They re-wrote the game level in that case.

IMHO - this could of been avoided if Sony had made a "generic" building that could not be directly identified with a real life building. Religious groups don't really like to see their holy places used to kill people in. Probably 'cos all religions have the rule of "Thalt shall not kill".... :)

Because you have serious problems with gun crime... while shooting INVADING ALIENS, right?

I mean, those 6 eyed freaks are everywhere... gun crime there is plenty high too, actually, and went up after you all banned guns, but that's for another thread.

It's a game. It's not real life. Stop acting like Jack Thompson, people... the fact that they chose a recognizable landmark was to make it more interesting: You're fighting in england to defend the country, not some random place on some other planet. You're a bloody good guy, for pete's sake!

"Rates of aggravated assault in the US are about 25% higher nationally than in England and Wales, in contrast to a sevenfold to eightfold difference in overall homicide rates."

and the number of murders(homicides) has remained constant (as a proportion of population) for decades in the UK (http://www.crimestatistics.org.uk/output/Page40.asp)
