Any hope for HDTV with Linux?

I was just curious as to what the situation was currently with Linux and recording/tuning HD? I know CableCARD is the only real way to do it, but if I remember correctly these only work on Windows. Also wasn't there some nonsense about CableLabs having to certify the device you are using it with?

Basically I'm just curious as to the overall situation with Linux. As for my situation, I just have Comcast Digital Cable at home. I know Linux can do Over-The-Air HD tuning, but is that it? How bleak does the future look?

DVB is the future.

DVB-T is the main HD transmission in Aus, and DVB-T cards for computers are getting common.

DVB-S is the standard here in New Zealand, I've got a couple Technisats myself. The only limit as far as HD goes is how well my system can pipe the mpeg2 stream from the card to the hard drive. DVB-T transmissions start here in 2008 or so.
