Alright, so I just did a major upgrade on my computer and I want to format and start fresh. I will have a C2D, 2 gigs of DDR2 800 ram and two 8800 in sli, this is my new gaming rig for the next couple years. Anyways, should I go with XP pro 64 bit or should I go to Vista Ultimate. Money is not really an issue since I can get either or for like 10 bucks at university, so which one is better? Should I wait for vista or just dive in now? Thanks.

I'd take Vista because by the time 64-bit is mainstream XP is going to be pushed out the door.

If multi-channel audio in games is important to you then XP might be the better alternative. If not, then you might as well go Vista right now, IMO.

If you are only going to have 2GB of RAM in the rig, don't even bother with a 64bit OS. There just isn't anything to be gained until to go to 4GB.

If you do go the 64bit route, go Vista. It's already better supported in the 64bit version than XP, and going forward, XP support will diminish. Unless there are certain compatibiliy issues with your hardware or software, there just isn't any reason to look back to XP.

Ummmm since this is your gaming computer for the next couple of years you are gonna need DX10 which is only on Vista.

I don't own those boards, or have a SLI setup, but from what I've heard ATM Nvidia does not support SLI. 2gb is a nice sweet spot for XP x86, and you might want to consider one of the Gaming Edition XP install's. I would go $10 for XP license now, find the gaming edition of XP in the usual places and in the future and use that until Vista's new kernel in SP1 comes out and spend another $10 for a vista license, then stick in another 2gb ram for the 64-bit if that's what you want to run.

Just my two cents.

Vista 64 is the way to go. Since i have it for the last couple of months, it is fast as compare to XP, and future proof even you are using 2GB right now, but later always can add another 2GB.

Not to mention you DX10 cards will be worthless without Vista.

I do plan on getting two more gigs sometime soon, once more money comes in, so it sounds like Vista is the way to go.

Off-topic I know, but I just gotta point out how bloody humorous a comment like that is to those of us, like me, who are happily enjoying SLI under vista ;)

Vista can prefetch (SuperFetch) more with 4GB of RAM. Therefore, larger amounts of application data can be loaded and/or data for a wider variety of apps can be cached. This "warm memory" state makes the system feel significantly more responsive. That is, if your usage patterns are repetitive enough for the operating system to get used to it and load what you need (which is totally not me, there's virtually no pattern to what I'll be doing at any given moment).
