I formated but backed up my bf2 files now when I put them back in my documents under C: and try to start BF2 it says something like "Unable to start, can not find d3d_25..something, please reinstall" Is there a way I can get bf2 to run without reinstalling?

Nope!

When a game is installed it doesn't put everything in one place, its puts files in your documents folder, in your programs folder and in several folders in your windows Directory, as well as putting info in the registery!

From what I have heard is the Macs do put Everything in a single folder, and you can do what you have done, but not on a PC!

Not always, I have had good luck with games like warcraft3 and ea racing games that whenever I reformat or move the folder to a new computer they work just fine. Bf2 on the other hand does have all of your settings I believe in the my documents section but it would just be better to reinstall that anyways and download the 500 meg patch with hopes of having less crashes.

doom works like that with everything in one place and same with fable

You're definitely going to have to reinstall it, like you'd have to do with most games since, like the others said, there are registry entries etc. that aren't present if you simply copy over a few folders.

you man 2142 you gotta reinstall..this get all those damn service packs

I had the same problem when tried that, you will have to reinstall to fix it, at minimum install the demo to fix it, if you dont have the retail disks for what ever reason.
