7900GS or an 8600GT?

I did go with evga for my 7900GS so I could do the step up once the ATI cards are released. If prices fall enough, I'll porbably just do that. I just want a quality DX10 card for less than $200.

where the hell are you getting a 7900gs for $60?
and where do see a 8600gts for $160? Most 8600gts cars are around $200-$240 and the 7900gs can be had for around $130-150. OK so he exaggerated a bit by saying "half". ;)

To all the EVGA step-up people..

You do realize that evga will charge you full MSRP for the new card right? Meaning if you can get it on say newegg for $150, if evga's MSRP is still $200 you will have to pay $200 for a $150 card.

So its better to use it BEFORE prices drop down on the card you want, otherwise its a waste (you will just be using a worse card for longer and paying the same amount in the end).

I got an 8600gt XXX for $160 from ZZF, thread title is 8600gt vs 7900gs ;P

My bad I was thinking gts the whole time. I see you got the XFX 8600gt card. I dont like it because it seems to be the only one with the old 7600gt cooler. All the other 8600gt cards from Evga,MSI, PNY and so on have a larger cooler. Also most of the larger coolers have 4 pin fan connections for better fan control. In one review of the XFX 8600gt XXX card was hitting 81 degrees. Thats too much heat for me. I know the card can take it but its the rest of my pc I dont want getting that hot.

The 8600 GT stock/overclocked will run games smoother than 7900GS even if the7900GS is overclocked... The 8600series alone has better HDvideo support,Better lighting , can handle more Texturtes and load X64Games and play With far better EyeCandy !

I still see alot of people rag on the 8600series , Ive used the 7900GS EVGA 256mb for 2months was not happy with game playing online. I picked up a 7950 512mb Ko EVGA after selling 7900Gs to a friend who only surfs the net:) I still was not happy! I then Borrowed my friends New Shinny( 8600GT)only 4hrs old saw that the card performed with better textures and lighting @1024x768 with all options turned on and vsync disabled ,had no tearing problems and performed at same Fps sometimes better than my 7950 does with or without Vsync on the same Games, REAL WORLD TESTING makes the benchmarks almost useless . My friend Dared me to 86my 7950 for a GTS8600 he was thinking i wouldnt part with my 7950 cuz it was New and the best Nvidia7series Card for$200.00bucks. All i can say is all my games play smoother LooK better and most FPS in game and online are amazing for such a midrange card!

Ok so the 8600GT handles its own ! I only picked up a 8600GTS because Me and my friend wanted to compare the two cards against the Last generation 7series cards 7900and above!

Ive played Thousands of hours online CSS and AmericasArmy FarCry64bit with several Nvidia cards ranging from Fx5200 upto the new 8600GT, 8600GTS and this is the only Series card i am able to Brag at holding its own besides the8800GTS ,Because of the Technoligy it brings at this time! The MIDRANGE CLASS benchmarks dont do it justice. Buy one test it youll see ! You can always get a 8800 .but that wouldnt be midrange now would it.

You sound like you are trying to throw a sales pitch....

Im putting mine on water, I deffinately see where you're coming from though. XFX just changed their warranty too, you can change cooling without voiding it =D Im hoping I can hit 750 or so on the core with water. The memory will most likely be holding me back, ill probably have to vmod it to hit anywhere near 2GHz

8600GTS @ 675/2000 is no faster than 7900GS @ 450/1320

the 128bit memory bus is the bottleneck

no mention the 8600GT @ 540/1400

@EOS30D

#1, I've already linked people to those pages, you really dont need to post so many pics
#2, The Xbit labs charts you showed us do not compaire the 8600GT to the rest of those cards directly.
#3, Have you considered the drivers?
#4, Think about it fundimentally, if the SPs were locked 50/50, it would be a 16 piped card. 16 pipes @ 540 MHz =~ 20 pipes @ 450 MHz.
#5, The memory bus really only shows its troubles with high levels of aa or af.
