I'm about to buy 2, eVga OC'd out of the box to 576 Mhz core/1700 mhz mem, 320 MB 8800GTS's to run in SLI, with a core 2 duo e6300, a 1000 Watt BFG PSU, 2 GB of OCZ SLI ready EPP 1066 Mhz ddr 2, on an evga 680i A1 (i think). I'm curious to know what kind of performance I would get out of those cards, vs the 640 MB versions... any thoughts?

Ditch the pre-overclocked cards. Waste of cash since EVGA allows overclocking in their warranty. My EVGA 320 OC's pretty good, and it is the normal, run of the mill card.

As far as 320 performance vs 640 it really depends on what you are doing and plan to do in the future. If you are going SLI, I would suggest going for the 640's.

Give us some more info and you will get opinions gallore :)

Mostly CNC3, HL2, Oblivion, Quake 4, etc... lots of games that require hella processing power I guess. I used to play WoW but I gave that up...found it to be boring as hell. With 2 320's I'll have 640 MB of total video ram plus the additional clock speeds (i'm going to go pre-oc'd because I don't have the necessary skill set to overclock without damaging something) With 2 640's, I'd have 1280 MB of video ram, obviously more is better...but for what I'm doing is it really THAT necessary to have over 1 GB of video ram? Isn't it more about processing power anyway?

The frame buffer is not doubled in SLi, just repeated so you lose the RAM as far as size, just increase bandwidth. Also what resolutions will you be shooting for??

So what are you saying, that going with 2 320's instead of 2 640's i'm not going to see any difference?

1680x1050 Resolution by the way

Quite the opposite. If you have 2 card that are sharing 320MB of GDDR, the ease of them outpacing the framebuffer increases. So if you get two 640's you will be safer at higher resolutions. The safe zone for a 320 is definaetly under 1600x1200 and that is in a single config.

I guess the resolution you are using is the big question.

EDIT: Might be OK. Need some more SLi users opinions. Anyone out there with better info on this one?

My last thought is the future. What kind of uprgade cycle do you usually stick with/thinking of? With the horizon full of hardware crushing games, you might take that into consideration as well.

Well let me put it this way, currently i sit with all of the specs i listed above, except i have 2 7800GTX's in SLI...and I get between 20 and 30 FPS in CNC3, 60 in Oblivion, and i can't remember the rest...would I get stronger FPS vs what i have now?

I tend to upgrade once or twice a year...

Yes, you would, that is a big fact. What I would worry about in your situation is having wished I got the 640's, but if you go EVGA you can change your mind and step-up.

Might want to search their forum and look at all the upset customers.

Now I am not trying to ruffle feathers, just stating facts, I just went through a botched RMA, but it was sorted (well I cant really say yet, as I have not got the card back working yet).

So Step-up could be an option.

Also what is the price difference you see in the 320 and 640 versions?

About a $120 price difference on average....I could very easily do the step up for both cards within 90 days, and that might be what I do...i just wanted to get up to the 8800's right away, I'd go with GTX's but damn, those bastards are huge, and they won't fit in my case.

I have a GTX and the thing is sickly fast and is retarded OC'er. I am running 700 core and 2100 on the ram with an EK waterblock and I love it. 13000 in 06 :)

The 320 is in the HTPC for LAN and Plasma gaming goodness at 720p. Love them both now that 101.70's are sorting my probs with Vista Ultimate.

Sweet, those GTX's are so damn big though, if they were the size of the 7800GTX's they'd be perfect...lol

Yah. The 320/640's are the same size as the 7800 GTX. The 320 replaced the 7800 GTX is my HTPC.

One of the best upgades I have ever had.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat here... I just sold off two voltmodded 7900 GT KO's for $150 apiece, and I just bought the EVGA 8800 GTS 320 MB from Newegg (The $259 card with Supreme Commander). I just couldn't justify the extra $120 for the 640 MB card... and that way I wouldn't have to spend any money on the video card upgrade...

Of course, idiot me realized after I bought it that I like to game at 1680x1050 with AA and AF.... and the games I've been playing lately are F.E.A.R., Company of Heroes, etc... which perform noticeably better on the 640 MB's... damn damn.

so, buyer's remorse started kicking in... Now I'm wondering whether I should just get another 8800 GTS 320, cancel the 320 MB order and get the 640, and whether I can justify the $120 price increase... decisions, decisions!

But that 8800 GTS 320 for $259 + (sale of Supreme Commander, which I already own ~ $20) = $240 is great, price-wise...

8500 3dmarks on my 2 yearold system.

Not sure what that means by comparison to what I have now but ok, lol

As far as I know the step up thing is the difference between the prices of the 2 cards isn't it?

Step up is simply the price that evga sets as the MSRP minus what your paid for it, plus shipping.

Look @ my system specs...i have ddr400 memory and you have ddr2 1066 i have an X2 4200+ and you have a Core 2 Duo. you'll score better.

Well for me it's not about the scores in benchmark programs that are made for the hardware you're running, lol. For me it's about real world FPS and detail I can get at the resolution I desire to play at. Right now in CNC3 I get between 20 and 30 FPS (depending on how many units are on the screen, and the type of map) at 1680x1050 everything maxxed out. I want to see much higher FPS than what I'm seeing right now. In Oblivion I see 60 at a minimum. I'm just wondering if what I want to get vs. what I have now will be worth it when going with the 320's instead of the 640's.

And about the step up thing, I've been calling evga's sales department religiously for the past 3 days and I haven't been able to get through, sometimes waiting up to 3 hours on hold...irritating as hell. I wanted to ask about the step up prices and see if I was correct.

Sorry for my lack of response to this thread, the email notification hasn't been notifying me like it should that people had responded.
