Got my Sharp Aquos LC-32GP1U "Gaming" 1080p display today!

Westy at Newegg - $999 or at BuyDig - $984

Sharp 37D62U - $1284 at Buydig. I'm leaning towards the sharp, but the Westy's price is really really hard to beat!

Also, I don't see any deals for the westinghouse around $900 or <. So I will take the sharp at $1,179.29, which is cheaper than the westinghouse (currently)
At Mwave:

Westy: $989.00

Shipping: $29.07

Total: $1,018.07

Even at the egg it's $1,059.98 shipped. You clearly didn't even try to shop around if you think the Sharp is cheaper.

Mleh, depends on where you look, but the westy is but ugly next to the sharp :D .

How close can you sit to this display when working with text? If you're only 2 - 2.5 feet away, will the characters look smooth, or do you see the individual pixels?

I'm concerned that the Westinghouse is too large to work on up close - maybe this display is a good compromise. Wish it had VGA input though.

Wow! Great Pics bm5!
Do you think you could take more pictures of games for me?
And possibly SDTV? Thanks so much.
Youre really selling this set to me

Those looking for Sharp 1080p displays, should also check out the Sharp LC 37D6U and the 32D6U, they are basically identical to the GP series except they do not have "Vyper Drive" and you may or may not find better bargains on these models since they will be carried at most retailers as display models.

On display, the Sharp 37" has noticeable better contrast and colors (IMO) compared to the Westy. Take that for what you will since the sets may not have been set up perfectly. The 2000:1 native and 10000:1 dynamic contrast looks as amazing as it sounds.

Just a heads up -- according to Sharp's website the D6U series only features Wide XGA resolution (1366x768) which, needless to say, isn't 1080p. Most people reading this are probably more interested in 1920x1080.

If you play PC games, does 1080p on this LCD have black bars on the top or bottom (16:9 versus 16:10)? Or does the image get stretched from 16:9 to 16:10?

No black bars whatsoever at 720p and 1080p!

Where did all the trolls come from? :D

I owned 2 westys and both were sent back...the blacks/contrast was definitely subpar on the westy. I can honestly say the westy is not in the same league as this set. The blacks are incredible on this display, it has a built in tuner, hdcp and 1.3 compliant, 6ms/viperdrive, loads of inputs and the frame alone makes the westy look infinitely cheaper. The Sharp has a beautiful piano black finish...reminds me of Darth Vader's helmet!

So loads of people have jumped on the westy bandwagon, and that's fine...the westy was a good deal....but definitely not a good deal better than this set. Now something much better has come along. Take it from a former westy owner, me.

Happy trolling!

btw rustman the 32" is the perfect compromise, whether you work or play on your computer.

This is a 16:9 display, not 16:10.

Yes I know its a 16:9 display but PC monitors are 16:10 so the question is as I have always run PC games on a PC monitor (16:10) will black bars (which I hate) show up on a 16:9 LCD TV when playing PC games (which are programmed to run on 16:10 PC monitors). So my question was if the image is changed on a pc game to run on a 16:9 display?

Scorpio answered my question...thanks Scorpio!

PCs aren't limited to 5:4, 4:3 and 16:10. They can fit any resolution as long as the applications support them.

Can't speak for the 32, but I just returned a 47" Westinghouse 1080 to get a 46" Sharp 1080, and am now returning the Sharp for the Westinghouse.

The Sharp does have better blacks, but IMO that is the only thing it had going for it. I found the HD and SD images to be "nosiy" if not a little blocky and found the Westinghouse to handle PC use far better. The Westinghouse also just looked better to me, again minus darker blacks of the Sharp. Again this is the 46" Sharp, the 32 is probably better suited. That being said I personally do not thing the Sharp is worth the premium. Having owned one of their top end sets I still prefer the Westinghouse. Now I just have to wait for a new Westinghouse 47 that should arrive on Wed.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for the comments and pictures. In your opinion, what is a comfortable seating distance for PC work? I mean editing, reading documents/spreadsheets, etc.

You guys can be as critical as you want, but if it gets personal, you may end up with more attention than you bargained for. It's against the rules you agreed to when you registered.

Quoting those posts doesn't help.

Keep it civil, guys.....

Hi Rustman

I sit about 2 feet from the monitor and it's perfect. I do a lot of work in Maya, Sony Vegas, After Effects, and Photoshop and I never have to move my head for editing work, which can be very tiresome if the screen is any larger. I run the monitor at 720p and the font size is also perfect for reading without eye strain whatsoever...text is crisp and sharp without being overly so.

No problem Science...just having a couple of laughs with the boys....nothing to see here folks, move along!

Thanks for your feedback Ferris. It's much appreciated.

Exactly, what Sharp model did you have?

2 feet is perfect...probably keep me from going any larger than 32...

I have just purchased the non-gamer version of this panel. It has the same specs minus the Vyper Drive... First off, the brightness on this thing stock is enough to sing your eyes out of their sockets! Besides that, the blacks are some of the nicest I have seen on an LCD panel, played a little Star Wars Battlefront 2 on my PC, and some Armored Core 4 and NFS Carbon on my 360... Needless to say, motion blur is barely existent in this panel... 32 Inches seems to be the sweet spot, text is really sharp! Up close far away doesn't matter, there isn't an issue with pixel pitch for my eyes (even with my glasses on)...

I will supply some pictures once I get home from work in the morning. Keep in mind this is the same panel but without the Viper Drive. Great... Fire alarm is going off, I work in the 30th St. Station in Philly, this is something I don't want to ignore... I wish I could say more but I must go..

Thanks for this info - this monitor is what I'm looking for.

GREAT! i've been looking for someone like you, Derfman. Do you see any noticable lag while using the 360 on the D62? Is it worth paying extra for the Vyper Drive model? Also, are you using a DVI to HDMI cable for PC use? If the 360 runs smoothly on this set, I'm definitely gonna buy it. Thanks

I meant the D62U series, not the D6U series. My apologies. So the 32D62U and the 37D62U. As pointed out in other threads, the D62U panels are identical except for the lack of DVI-I and Vyper drive.

I have not noticed any input lag at all... The TV seems perfect, and I am glad I didn't hesitate on purchasing this model... I had purchased a DVI to HDMI converter for my PS3 to hook up to my ViewSonic monitor, before I realized the monitor was not HDCP compliant. So I hooked that onto the end of the DVI cable I had been using with the ViewSonic and that worked out perfectly. A DVI to HDMI cable would be a bit more organized and would serve the same purpose, if not increase the quality of the picture a bit (if thats even possible)...

I would be more than glad to do a full review on this set as a computer monitor and a console TV display. I have a PS2, PS3, and a 360. I also have a computer that is still equipped well enough to pull most games at maxed settings at 1920 x 1080 without breaking a sweat. My digital camera is mid end at most but produces good enough pictures...

If anyone has any preferences as to what you would like me to use / do in my review please send them forward. I have never reviewed a product before, but am more than intrigued to do so.

And I bumped back and forth, between the NEC 2690 (which I still may get at a future date as a second monitor) but God knows I need to save up again haha... then to the Dell 27 Incher... back to the NEC... than after this review popped up, I did some more research on this unit, and after seeing it on sale today... I couldn't pass it up... I did pay $1,670 total, that includes $1,244 (price matched to Circuit City at SEARS and 10% added to the difference)... $314 for the 3 yr in house service plan... And tax... So I really could have had the NEC 2690 for that price, but honestly... After hooking this up and spending a few hours with it before work tonight.... I truly am satisfied with my purchase, and wish to pass on any technical info forward to fellow members here who are looking into this unit or the Gamer Edition.

Sorry for all the questions, but does it support 1080p over components? Some places say only 1080i over components while others make no mention of the supported resolutions at all. Again, thanks for all of your help and feedback.

Sorry for all the questions, but this is probably this will probably be the dealbreaker or dealmaker for me. Does it support 1080p over components? I was able to get it to accept and actually list the displayed resolution of 1080P under Component from the XBOX 360 Dashboard. But please give me until about 10AM EST to verify that 100% for you. I do believe that it does since it actually displayed at the top for example INPUT 3 - Component - 1080P and the 360 seemed fine with it. But I didn't test it further because I had to run to work. I was actually playing my games in a much lower resolution earlier and it was upscaling that, and there was no input lag there. But yea, before you rush out and buy it... at least give me till around 10 AM tomorrow to give you some pictures / guaranteed verification of this outcome.

yea it does. here is a quote from the user manual

• To enjoy the AQUOS 1080p display capability, connect your external equipment using a component cable and set the equipment to 1080p output.
• See page 14 for connecting a DVD player or a Digital TV STB to the HDMI terminal."

Yup, and I will be supplying pictures of how this looks tomorrow. I have gone with the Present brightness and color settings of Standard right now... but I may take pictures of each one... so you can see how bring this thing can get. :p

Can't wait. A question, where're you guys buying your tv units from and what're some of the prices you guys are seeing?

I've only found a couple online stores that sell this model in particular.

Would I be able to find this at let's say a nearby Circuit City?

Circuit City or Sears... Now keep in mind the model that they carry is the LC-32D62U which is the same panel but without Vyper Driver (which doesn't even seem to be needed), and the lack of a DVI-I port, you get two HDMI, and a couple of component, and then S-Video and Composite for Standard Def...

CC is running a sale, $140 off their $1,399 price. SEARS will price match this, I managed to get them to price match it and then also apply 10% to the difference. The unit was down to $1,244 for me. But with a 3 yr in house service plan, and tax my total came up to $1,670. I live in NJ so Sales Tax was 7%... CC's sale I believe is a two day sale.

Thanks for the lighting reply Fred. Hmmm...I gotta jump on this deal by Mar. 26 as the sale will end soon. I gotta check out my local CC. My local Sears doesn't seem to have much of an electronics anymore (the last I saw). California has a 8.25% tax.

I advise you to check your local stores inventory on the item through CC's website itself. It seems very accurate, they said they were out of stock, so I went there in person and it was so. I was going to drive 20 minutes to another CC, but then I realized as I left the one CC that the SEARS at the Moorestown Mall across the street still seems to carry a good amount to TVs.

Either way, do a quick search on the web, before you go out of your way looking for this TV, though all but the closest CC had the TV in stock in NJ :)

Does anyone know for sure if these 2 LCDs have in fact the same panel?

Second, you can get the "gamer" version for around $1,200 delivered which is less than what you can get at circuit city for the non-gamer version.

I think I'm definately looking to get the 32 inch version but I wonder do I need to spend the premium on the gamer version. I'm looking forward to seeing a little more on the LC32D62U version. I must admit I'd rather spend the premium than think I missed out on something :) ... I know it's pathetic ....... really guys all are doing a great job of updates and putting this monitor through the paces!!!! Thank guys!!!

I'm assuming your using a HDMI to DVI cable right?
