Intel Major Price Cuts Quad Core $266

if the rumours are true, everyone will have godly systems. me, personally im saving £1000 for upgrades in q4 of this year. quad core, quad gig of ram, triple gfx cards? quad raid 0 etc... all depends on prices.

I hope both Intel and AMD go out of business so Via can take over the market

...yeah ...Via

:)

The only market left for Intel to sell more processors in is the Low-End portion that is the only real thing AMD has right now. AMD is foreclosing on profits to hold on to market share. Mainstream and Up is a bust for AMD. Low-end and Lower Mainstream is where AMD is still competitive. Now Intel wants that as well. IMHO, Ed is right and Intel wants to put AMD back in the box or back to 12 to 14% of the market, not 26% LOL! Intel certainly doesn't want to *Kill off AMD and owns stock in AMD as well:)

Intel Fans shouldn't want this to happen anytime soon because these sweet assed prices will not stick around.

Our best bet is to hope Intel and AMD never make any backroom deals to Price Fix. Just IMHO, ATI and NVidia already shows us how much that sucks;)

Intel said 45nm yields are great, not just good. They said they got the fastest RAMP up in their history with C2D's great yields. Guys, just maybe they weren't lying? If those 45nm processors are a good 10 to 20% faster and yields are that good. Intel will still sell a couple of $1000 plus models and make a tons of money on the rest as well. Please look at how many of them are on a 300mm wafer.

Lastly We also know that Quad Core Processor based on two Core Side by Side is cheaper than AMD's monolithic design.

God I hope this doesn't kill AMD! I'll say this though if AMD does survive they will come back with a vegence...especially with ATI by there side!

Hmmmm do you think Intel is dropping the price because they intend on bringing the 80 core processor to market a bit earlier?:D

wow quad core for under $300 now that makes me wanna upgrade even though its only been a year since I built this new comp.

I want a cheap quad core proc that I can drop into my 650i mobo later in the summer / fall.
I knew Intel was going to make my wish come true soon,I just didnt think it would be this cheap !!?!?!!

I am more then happy with my E4300's performance currently though, but still, its very very nice to know this is in the pipe. :D

anandtech just posted the prices on the E6850 for $266 :| dunno about the QC though, an E4550 or w/e will be $113 2.2ghz 2m cache :O!

i'll definitely be crossing the bridge this year and move to C2D or C2Q depending on price/performance ratio and how it pans out.., then i will be able to fold for the [H]ord[E] with my spare parts...

in retrospect, i'm glad i skipped core 2 duo and waited for this. time to upgrade my socket 939 venice

AMD is not coming up with anything now. The reasons for the Intel price drops cannot be due to competition, because there isn´t any. AMD is struggling financially right now and Intel is just putting some fuel on AMD´s fire.

So the price drops are good for us in the short run, but if AMD must survive if we are to get decent and affordable CPUs in the future.

so what if they have too much? just stop producing the chips, but to cut the price to 1/3-1/4 of the origial has nothing to do with "too much" of it

Generally it's really bad to not keep your fabs going full speed due to fixed costs, such as building these new plants, etc involved. Really with Intel and AMD's roadmaps I think we can expect at least the near term ~12 months to be nice for the consumer on CPU pricing. I can't wait to see how AMD counters, I'm looking at a new system build for Q3 and if this is accurate I'm going to be testing out the quads, even if they don't make my FPS faster yet. :D

Well shit. I was all set to pull the trigger on my new comp next week (sorta at least) and now this happens. Maybe Ill stick it out till the first week of April and see what happens.

Holy heck. I come here looking for the price drop of E6600 to $220 and see that quad core will be $300 or less? Is it already April 1st by any chance? Is there really a chance that I will spend more... on my power supply for my next build than my CPU?

Or do what I did. e4300 to pass the time and keep the board when jumping to a quad. Yeah it might cost more, but you get the performance of a C2D today.

i highly recommend to all to wait for the 45nm quads cause they will be cooler for sure and have a little more instructions than the current quads.

Gread advice .... if you didn't need a new computer until next year!

By the time the 266USD price drop for Core 2 Quad comes into effect, it will have decent competition as AMD's K8L/K10 should be available on desktop by that time period.

Intel is competative. They know barcelona will be native quad core so they need to flush out there dual cores to get people to buy their quad cores and to get ready for penryn which is rumored to be q3/q4 and use DDR3 and it will use their new chipsets due out around the same time.

In the end it just means better performance per Dollar for us. Regardless whos top dog.

One can only wonder what would make Intel cut prices so much, especially on their high end models! This move will truly bring quad-core to the masses. Is Intel scared of what AMD has in store?

Those who've been following the industry for a while understand that this always happens; there's nothing to wonder about.

i hope games start supporting quad core... i think crysis will :D couple a quad core at say 3ghz, sli 8800gtx's and 1000mhz ram :D:D:D

Valve is supposedly updating Steam engine games to run with multicore enhancements before Ep2 is released, if not with it. They specifically want quadcore cpus in their workstations because of the benefits it provides.

As for upgrading your mobo, the 45nm Quads will be 1333 FSB, IIRC. The current parts are 1066 FSB, no? Sounds like an upgrade would be needed.

This is nothing special. Its just intel trying to make as much money as possible by moving as much product as they can. With quad core and better CPUs on their way, dual core wont last long, and no one wants to be left with truckloads of obsolete processors.

And its not a doom and gloom scenario for AMD either, this isnt the 1st time they have been down on their luck. Remember, untill a few years ago, the home PC was almost totally Intel. People always have, and for the most part, will always think Intel when it comes to CPUs. Its a household name, whereas AMD is mostly known to computer gearheads.
They still make the green though...Even though it has been a bad year for them. Buying ATi only to have ATi get leapfrogged by Nvidia. AMD also divested itself of its Flash Memory business, choosing solely to focus on its microprocessor and logic businesses.
AMD is a company of 16,000 people...compared to Intels what? 94,000

And when it comes to the big picture, AMD is fine, always has and always will.

Im no AMD or intel !!!!!!. Far as I care, both are pumping out amazing products. Everyone thought AMD was going to wipe intel off the map with its Athlon processors, and no people are up in arms over intel crushing AMD with its c2d and quads.

Well I do not want to sound boring but Quad core is an overkill for most peoples. In fact, I am sure that most users would not notice any difference if their dual core was replaced by a quad core.
Yeah, Quad Core sounds cool and delivers great synthetic benchmarks results but it is a fact that most applications ignore the added cores at the moment. I never buy computer parts for the future, I always buy for now. I prefer to upgrade often (I replace my video card every 6 months and my CPU every 12 months) and I do not want to be an early adopter since price is high and bugs are common.

Price cuts are always welcomed but we need applications (games!) that can use the added cores.

Those who've been following the industry for a while understand that this always happens; there's nothing to wonder about.

..well I just wonder why there is nothing to wonder about ..that's all

:)
