is this good? or bad? is it as good as the 37 inch model, just 42 inches?

http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?State=VA&showship=ok&stk_code=weslvm42w2

$1,299. Etronics is a good site, I bought my car dvd receiver for $210 shipped (was a JVC) and had no problems :).

it doesn't say you can check out with free shipping with paypal but in some other threads people did it with the 37 inch model. so who knows.

total cost is $1,484 shipped to VA.

froogle shows the tv for 1269 so perhaps etronics can be haggled with to lower the price $30 :D

Fatcash offers 1.5% rebate, not sure if ebates offers rebates for etronics or not.

Or you could just spend the extra $16 and order it from Crutchfield with free shipping and white glove delivery service.

well i'm hoping when i do buy it i can get the free paypal shipping. i will haggle them ;). and if you call on the phone from etroincs you get a screencover and tripod free. not bad

this is the W2, not the W3. I believe it was only the W3 that does not suffer from banding and backlight bleeding, but don't quote me on this without looking into it :p

W3 for 42" set? i believe there is no W3 unless your mistaken for 37" one. And as for banding issues i believe those were fix with the new 1.0 firmware for 42" W2

has anyone been able to get free shipping? If so i will buy the 37" now.... lol how good is etronics never bought from them before.

FREE Shipping with PayPal does not apply to TVs :(

but if u pay by paypal it deducts the shipping charges and you only pay for the tv.

And what is stopping them from telling you that since it is posted on their web site that free shipping doesn't apply to the tvs that you either have to pay for shipping or cancel your order?

And lets just hope that if they cancel your order they don't pull a monarch and take forever to refund your $1299.

I have nothing against etronics, but if you can buy this for $1299 shipped jump on it!

I picked mine up in July for $1500 and I've been pretty happy with it.

*Edit*
Come to think about it, if they give you grief just tell them that you didn't purchase a TV, you purchased a HD Monitor since it doesn't have a tuner. Semantics I know, but just maybe.

I can go into further detail, but based upon the FCC docs this is not classified as an HDTV because it lacks the proper ATSC tuner.

Also if you check out westinghousedigital.com and look under LCD TV's you will notice this model isn't there, its listed under the 1080p Monitors section.

Edit #2.
Also xpcgear has it for $1,345.39 shipped to MO.

According to the site:

FREE SHIPPING
on all orders over $300 (except TVs) when you pay with PayPal

supposedly it isnt a television. IT is a monitor. So it should work. Another poster said other people got away with it. Im gonna try it i guess

I owned the 42" Westy for a very short period of time until I went to my local Best Buy and I looked at the 40" Sony Bravia XBR2 TV. needless to say I was hooked on the Sony as soon as I saw it in action and I returned the Westy.

now grant it, the Sony did run me about $600 more over the Westy but the differences between the picture quality was well worth the extra $600.

$600 difference might sound like a lot of money but when you think about it, how often does one make a major purchase like this? not too often. so why not go for the gusto and get something thats better since you'll be using this thing for many years to come.

I was in a market for a 1080p panel, and considered this model. The deal you linked to isn't a bad deal at all, but I decided to go another route due to the following factors:

  • Many owners complain about the Westy's remote. I would normally overlook this and go with a universal, but that ended up adding enough to the price to consider another model. Quite a few owners talk of the IR remote receiver on the set being very finicky as well.
  • Lack of a tuner. Sure, I could just use one of my TiVos as my tuner... but mine are single-tuner Series 2s, which could make for awkward moments when it boots me out of a program to record one of my season pass items.
  • Lack of over-the-air HD tuner. If you have HD through your cable or satellite provider this may not be an issue, but for some it could mean even more expense tacked onto the final overall price.

In the end, I decided that the little things just kept adding up and we ended up getting the 42" 1080p Toshiba Regza. INCREDIBLE picture, built-in tuners and plenty of AV ports (including 2 HDMI). Only ended up costing $280 more (including shipping) for a much nicer panel without the lack of the features I'd end up having to tack on later anyway:

Link to 42" Toshiba Regza 1080p

Again, the Westy is a good deal, but for many there could potentially be a lot of other things to consider in the overall cost.

NOTE: be sure to pad budgets enough to leave room for a nice bracket purchase if you plan on wall mounting. I found out the hard way that skimping on that can lead to plenty of installation nightmares.
.

So differences I see between the sets:

Toshiba Westinghouse
Contrast 800:1 1000:1

Ya know I was gonna do a list of differences....but screw that....the contrast alone is enough to junk that Toshiba to me. The westinghouse may not have all the extra inputs that the Toshiba does...but it still owns it, in overall quality.

this is the same store that amazon.com uses for a lot of their tv's.. if you read their fine print on returns it says tv are NON-RETURNABLE! which is just horrible for such a big purchase.. just be careful what you get yourself into, especially when you decide you dont like it then your screwed see here

Non-Returnable Products and special ordered items, shavers, televisions & monitors over 21", air conditioners, or PAL equipment are non-returnable, BBQ grills, Large screen televisions come with at-home service and can not be returned even when defective, Please see here for more info on returns on Computer items.

EVEN WHEN DEFECTIVE! Wow thats got to suck when you get one with 25 dead pixels :(

and a big wopper

We reserve the right to charge up to a 15% restocking fee on all returns.

just trying to look out for you guys that may not be reading up on this stuff.. good luck

How well does the WH 42" run games? Am considering getting this through the exhange (military store) at one of our bases. They have it at $1449, but I think they price match...although not so sure they'll do it for an online deal. Reguardless, living on Hawaii would cost me a butt load to ship it from the mainland (when they say "free shipping!!" it's usually follwed by "except Alaska Hawaii and PR"), so the $1229 deal would probably exceed my $1449 (tax free, no ship cost) deal. Not to mention I can pay just 10% of total cost , take it home and pay the rest off in 6 months interest free without credit.

Just need to know...1920x1080 seems like low res for such a big monitor. My 24" dell is 1920x1200 and looks great. Does the 42" LCD/TV at those res look more pixelated? I'm not too picky for resolution and I think bigger is better, but 42"...will that just make me sit farther back from the screen? Am I better off with the 37" westinghouse if I wanted it to be a PC monitor as well as TV screen? The 37" is $1299 at the exchange.....so really not much difference in price considering the size difference.

if you are going to sit 2 ft away then use the 37" for a desktop monitor. If you are going to use it mostly as a TV/media player with some couch side game playing, get the 42".

That is if you trust specs (the Toshiba doesn't include adaptive brightness into the contrast spec as many manufacturers do) over your own eyes. Take a side-by-side look at sets and THEN make a judgement.

We checked out the Toshiba at local stores next to pretty much everything else we were considering, and I can tell you that the picture is absolutely beautiful.

-and overall quality is not the same thing as a list of numbers. Go ahead and make claims about specs, but overall quality goes far beyond that checklist.

I was reading some online articles about the 42 inch and some green hue in the color of the picture? Has this been corrected with a firmware update (maybe it couldn't be) or some kind of manufacturer update?

Also, they also mentioned a lack of advanced color controls? Is this something to consider? I'm mainly going to use this monitor to play WoW and that's about it. With some HD-DVD watching when I get one.

"Merchandise that ships via truck cannot be returned for refund or exchange, nor can these orders be cancelled or refused once shipped. (we may refuse your return or charge for return shipping)."

Yeah, for those of you that don't live on a runway or in a marina this could be a problem. What makes it worse is if etronics is not located on a runway or marina you're just SOL.

I plan on buying the 42W2 from mwave.com.

It comes to me from TX to FL for $1355 after shipping.

This was the cheapest after shipping I could find from a reputable company. You can get it cheaper from places like Page Computers, but I'm not going to play roulette with this.

Just an FYI to everyone; I ordered the 37" 1080p Westy from Etronics in November of 2005 with el cheapo shipping; (figured I'd be ok since it was shipping only about 25 miles) and it arrived severely damaged.

There were gaping holes and gouges in the box and the screen was spidery-cracked in the corner. Needless to say, I was a sad panda to see such a beautiful piece of machinery so thoughtlessly abused.

To Etronics' credit, they took it back and issued me a full refund, so I wouldn't call them shady by any means, but I would say that this is at least one story where going with a cheap shipping option can get you burned, at least out of time.

I ended up ordering the same model from Best Buy the next week because it went on sale, and paid about $20 more than Etronic's price, but got an undamaged monitor that I can happily say STILL seems huge to me just about every time I sit down at my desk.

I had the same concerns with my recent purchase of the 42, but all this passed once I hooked it up. Picture is great - no banding, mine had no dead pixels, and no shutdowns. For gaming at 1920x1080 this is the best, and for video watching its really good for one or two people. Once you get out of the 'sweet spot' however is when you see the backlight bleeding and the picture quality lessens a bit. There is no backlight bleeding when viewing it front and center.

I must say, Quake at 1920x1080 = Sweetness.....

Now just need a vid card that can keep up with it a little better than my current 6800LE
