The (in)famous Microsoft Office mascot Clippy has officially been put out to pasture. Many had speculated that the paperclip may have seen his day with the release of Office 2007 and MS is now officially confirming it opting to remove him for a more coherent UI.

The lights dim. Roll film. The music starts gently at first--it's Boyz II Men's "End of the Road," possibly, or perhaps Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi." The film is a montage, candid moments from a life caught on film. Young Clippy is being brought home from the hospital, in a box alongside the other paperclips in his litter.

I won't truly believe this until I see clippy with a wood stake driven through his heart. Good riddance though.

Clippie and me were tight..

We can cuff ourselves to trees nakie and protest.

Of course... i'll join you guys later after you start.

On second thought..... let's not get naked and cuff eachother to tree's that's

Myself, i always had the cat, but the damn paperclip did get annoying - I wont miss it

Are you sure you want to get rid of clippy?

Looks like no one is sad clippy is gone, would you like to reactivate him?

I only once had to use Clippy only when I necessarily had to, and that was back in 97 when I needed help on something. He is now as Cluppy, the disabled Clippy.

It looks like Cluppy or I mean Clippy will live on, a site has it a download for all types of windows. He has not died yet!

Copy and paste for your horror.

You could turn Clippy off... but yeah Clippy has a special place in the annals of bad UI history. I once had a funny experience where I closed an office app, and Clippy waved goodbye to me, and as Clippy was disappearing into the background, the application "encountered a problem and had to close. " Well, I thought it was funny anyhow... It would actually have been more appropriate if Clippy had given me the finger, instead of waving goodbye...

Anyway Office has gotten better over the years actually. The more they will open up the file formats, and do everything in XML, the more I'll be tempted to buy it. But even then I still wouldn't buy it, because OpenOffice is working great for me.

I sure hope they replace him with Sarge from Red vs Blue (Red team Halo character). :p
