I've been looking at different laptops and I'm pretty close to buying one. I like the way HP's look and feel, and they're not too expensive. Not as thick or ugly as Dells either IMO. here's one I put together for about $1480 on costco.com with a free upgrade to Vista and before a $50 rebate:

I'd mainly be using it for school/work with light gaming. Is that a decent deal?

i think the hp you selected is part of their consumer line, which is crap compaired to their business line

also you're not getting that good of deal based on the hardware you selected (namely the video card)

if you want to see other options, check out the asus s96j or compal hel80

here is a list of asus resellers

i'd like to recommend
www.btotech.com
www.powernotebooks.com
www.milestonepc.com

they have pretty good sales reps there

as for compal, check out:
discount laptops
milestonepc
xotic pc
sager notebooks
powernotebooks

quite a few of the asus resellers sell compal as well, though i don't think you can beat powernotebooks since they had excellent support, and it comes with a 3 year warranty standard, and bto tech has the best prices around

Ok, time for a photoshoot. I love this thing. Got it at CC on friday for $900. Get an hp they are so cool and affordable. I can only imagine what it will be like to have the free vista on this thing!

yeah the new HP consumer line looks sweet ;) but I have to agree with tickle_me_emo...you can get a better deal than that...

I configured some of those to the same specs, but they seemed to be more expensive. Is Compal a good brand? I've never heard of it. If I can find a lappy with the same specs for cheaper, im all for it. :)

In my opinion I say HP is the most realiable laptop out there currently. (no offense to other brand name laptop owners). I currently own the one in my sig and it works 100% everyday. I use it for school/work and gaming.

did you factor in the video card which is 2.5x faster and the warranty?

I have to disagree...they look pretty slick and all, but their consumer line isnt bulletproof (not even close) and their assistance...well their assistance sucks (at least here in Portugal...)

Compal is nice...build quality is very good :)

well of course assistance is bad in different parts of the world but here in North America their services are great from what i heard from a friend who has a HP and when he had a question regarding his lappy, the assisant describe every bit of detail to him about it and he was satisfied in the end. I never experience HP assistance before so i dunno.

I had a DV6119US HP. I had nothing but pure issues with it and eventually returned it to Circuit city in favor of a Toshiba Laptop. I couldn't be happier Honestly. I would never ever touch an HP again. Poor battery life, poor quality control, poor everything.

I was interested in the HPs until I found a few at BB that had the same mushy keyboard in the upper left. Don't think they are all like that, but compared to the keyboard on the T43Thinkpad I wound up with there's no comparison.

OTOH I recently rehabbed a colleague's son's Turion HP 17" laptop (another victim of Nortonization) and found it to be pretty slick once I'd rid it of its demons.

I'm not a big fan of the glossy look, however. Too smeared looking for me. Still, if I move to a Vista laptop, I'll consider one...

I counted about 5 reversals of opinion there...;-)

I had an HP laptop (ZT3140) a couple of years ago. Their customer support was really good i.m.o. I had a problem with my battery; so they overnighted me a replacement one. Really quick and fast service. I sold the laptop last summer to buy a macbook, but I did enjoy my HP laptop while i had it.

poor battery life?? i have 8 hours of pure battery life on my HP. I got a 12 cell battery and it last me through the day. That is if i dont play games or watch pure movies all day or else it reduces my time to 5-6hours. but if im just doing homework and surfing the net I have full 8 hours of battery. I dont even need to bring my battery adapter to school all i need is just my battery and it last me the whole day.

Some of our consultants here are using HP's from the business line, and I can tell you that every single one of them has had some sort of problem. Our management will most likely going back to Dell for future purchases, as our Dell's have been very reliable.

all of my hps had about 2hrs of me using the pc. My Toshiba I can sit and play wow on and my battery lasts about 3 1/2 hrs.

Personal expierence with HPs and others' as well...power jack on the mobo will always find its way lose. I'm so sure that HP just press-fits those damn things, just solder it down, and it will never...ever...move again. Solidified mine in liquid adhesive tape.
