Hello Folks,

I'm upgrading my Athlon 64 3200+ (Socket 939) to either a

Athlon 64 FX-60 Toledo 2.6Ghz, Socket 939 ( 449.00 at newegg )

or

Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo 2.4GHz, Socket 939 ( 242.00 at newegg )

Looking at the spec of both the only differance i can see is operating freq. Is there something i'm missing ? Why is there a almost a 200 dollar differance ?
I'm leaning toward the 4800+ and i'll prob OC it abit, but nothing crazy. ;)
Thought's ? help ? heh :)

Thank you in advance

cheers,

The reason FX-60 has such a premium over the X2 4800+ is...

#1.
unlocked multi on the FX-60 that generally gives it
a better potential to Overclock

#2.
The FX line of branding value.

#3.
Best s939 out there.

i would say neither, i would go for an opty.

IF you have a good overclocking mobo, the Opty 165 (same cache as the 4800 and FX-60, but clocked at 1.8ghz) for $150 is the best deal out there.

If you do NOT have a good overclocking mobo, though - not such a good choice. I have a Shuttle system, FSB won't budge over 230 stable, so my overclock is limited to 2.1ghz. It's...alright, but not fantastic. If you have one of those systems that does closer 300fsb, though, that'll put you in the right ballpark (300fsb = 2.7ghz clock...faster than even the FX-60!)

Thank you for everyone's input :)

I guess i should clear up some things ( turn my sig on for one Lol ). The rig i built is only for gaming, nothing else is done on it ( i built other rigs for that heh ;) ) Anything that is not needed to enhance my gaming experience is turned off or uninstalled. :D
Ok with that out of the way, will i notice any differance between the two proc's ? I'm not talking benchmarks / scores, i mean real world gaming differance ?
This will be the last proc upgrade for this rig for at least two years, so i kinda want to get it right and not worry about it heh :p

Thanks again everyone, this really helps me :)

Cheers,

It's the last of the s939 line. It has an unlocked multi. and o/c's quite well actually. Sell your old proc and go from there.

Does the fx-60 reach 3.0ghz on air?

My board is not an overclocking giant... I have plenty of volts to work with but my FSB is extremely limited to maybe 220...

If I could pop in an fx-60 and set the multiplier to 3ghz maybe with a bump in voltage that would be pretty sweet.

I am in a similar boat... deciding on a processor upgrade to 4400, 4600, or 4800 maybe or a new video card...

My FX-60 is running 2.8ghz on stock voltage. I haven't had time to try any higher yet.

BTW - the FX-60's can be bought used for around $300. I got mine here on the for sale forum for that price.

Hmmmm, if I had the money to spend I would go with the FX-60...
Awh~ vanity, ain't it grand...
I got the FX-60, for vanity sakes, lol and since I am staying s939 until
AM3 comes out.

If I didn't have money to spend, from the provided option, I would go with
a X2 4400+ (if you can find one): the newer 89W toledo cores,
since they seem to clock better, and with a good stepping I've seen them
go up to around 2.7GHz on air. Furthermore they have 2x1MB L2 cache
while the more expensive 4600 has 2x512KB L2.
or
a new video card in February; since ATi's R600 will show in addition to
new 8 series mid-level and enthusiast-level variations.

Mine does 3.0 with the stock cooler at 1.36 v. I have the asus sli premium mb but my ram is pretty good the ocz redline. cpu set at 250 x 12 but i also ran it at 15x200.

get an opteron 170 or 175 the 10 or 11x will give even the crappy OCing mobos a chance at hitting 2.6+ speeds and getting much more value out of your $$.... save the extra and get a 8800gts in a few payperiods

As a non-overclocker (perish the thought) I can't complain at all about my X2/4800+. For what I do, it's great. I certainly wouldn't mind an FX-60, just for that extra .2 GHz, but I won't quibble about it...then again, hell, I've reached that point where I can't upgrade my PC without completely upgrading the thing. (Again.)

I picked up a 4600+... but I am considering taking it back and putting the money towards a 4800 on ebay maybe... but I don't know.

My games are GPU limited at this point anyway... my other apps are already fast enough.

I tried a little overclocking on the 4600+, and I can say that my motherboard might be dying a slow death. I cannot boot with much over 220HTT... I used to be able to boot with up to 260.

I am just going to run stock for now.

*Just an update*

Thank you everyone for your thoughts,

I finally went for a OPT 185 2.6G and a Zalman CNPS 9500 cooler. The FX-60 is now going for 550.00 and the Athlon 64 x2 4800+ has been out of stock for over a week now ( both on newegg )
I got the opt 185 and cooler for 293.98 after redeeming 100.00 gift certificate :D . I plan to OC the 185 just over 3.0G. Now i just need to save up for a video card ;)

Thanks again folks

Cheers,

I can update too.

Took the 4600+ back and continue to use the x2 3800.

It (3800) is a terrible overclocker, but the 4600+ was not enough of an improvement for the price. I will hold out for something better or just build a new system.

the 4600+ could easily reach over 2.6ghz on even my asus a8v with the stock HSF.

My 3800+ needs 1.6v and a very good HSF to reach 2.5ghz. I run it with an AMD heat pipe stocker at 2.2ghz.

But saving $250 bucks allowed me to invest in things more important (gasp!) like a real bed to sleep on.
