I heard there was a new program out to replace Windows. Does anyone know the name of it or is this false information? Thanks in advance.

Replace Windows? Like a different OS? Well there are various distros of Linux and BSD, and MacOS is out there too, but none of them are what i would call new. One might say that the recent popularity that some of the Linux distros are currently enjoying might make them seem new though.

Whether Linux can replace Windows for you is an individual question. Many Windows apps and games will not run on Linux, but Linux has it's own apps that you might like. For example, if you use Outlook for email, then you are out of luck on Linux, but if you like Thunderbird then Linux would do fine for you. of course, considering that Linux is free, you can always try it out and then change your mind and go back to windows later.

OH wow... This made my day. Well as the above poster have stated - you are probably talking about an Operating System that can replace the Windows one that you are running.

I would reccomend the Kubuntu over the Ubuntu, they are the same but uses KDE and looks much more awesome and eh if that doesn't floats your boat, go with Xubuntu - It's quite simple and effective.

That gets my vote as the most ambiguous question of the year. Of course, the year is only 4 days old, and I'm sure something will eclipse it soon.

Maybe by "replace Windows" they mean replace the current version, as in with Vista?

There are also programs to replace your shell in Windows to do all sorts of neat stuff.. but that isn't new.

Thanks for the info.

The Linux distro that most directly aimed at replacing Windows was Lindows/Linspire. It's not free however. However every once in a while they offer it free since they want to get people to sign up for their websites software installer service. I never tried it, so I don't know how it is.

the op mentioned "new program" so i'm guessing he's talking about vista because it's not like linux was released just last week, lol.

replace windows like a difference OS or a new windows shell (ala Litestep and Blackbox)

Linux xp is available as a download free but there is a $20.00 or so activation fee. You can use for about 30 days at no cost. There is also a getting started page linux xp desktop 2006 home

probably, the most directly aimed "replacement" for Windows is ReactOS . It's a FOSS implementation of the Win32 API. It goes beyond WINE since WINE runs on top of another OS. ReactOS _is_ an OS.
