I heard a few rumours that the PS3 has already outsold the 360 in Japan, just wondering if anyone knows of a reliable source with Console sales figures in Japan, and your thoughts of course, And please dont turn this into a "But Nintendo This" and "Nintendo that" thread
Thanks.

11/27 - 12/03 Sales Figures for Japan - YTD totals in parentheses.

How many did the X360 sell last year? I don't really feel like digging out 2005 YTD totals.

Sourced from Media Create.

1. Wii - 350,358 (350,358)
2. DSL - 176,901 (6,132,183)
3. PS3 - 31,436 (187,836)
4. PSP - 23,917 (1,564,018)
5. PS2 - 23,115 (1,297,667)
6. 360 - 4,053 (107,503)
7. GBA SP - 1,572 (215,240)
8. GBM - 1,252 (136,719)
9. NGC - 821 (72,060)
10. NDS - 140 (934,599)
11. GBA - 22 (3,292)
12. XBX - 11 (1,746)

The PS3 does not have more units in Japan than the 360.

The 360 has sold almost 200,000 units in Japan.

The PS3 has barely sold that many in the states. There are probably about 100,000 PS3s in Japan right now.

Okay, I decided to be a nice guy and dig out the final 2005 numbers.

Sourced: http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=5948

NDS - 390,181 (4,151,356)
PSP - 110,741 (2,200,610)
PS2 - 78,646 (1,968,846)
GBASP - 15,998 (696,262)
NGC - 12,579 (273,180)
XBX360 - 12,300 (70,567)
GBM - 11,234 (415,088)
GBA - 447 (25,180)
XBX - 121 (12,016)

So combine last year's 360 YTD total with 2006's 360 YTD total and the comparison as of 12/03 is:

XBox 360 = 178070
Playstation 3 = 187836

So you guys were saying?

Check your facts.

PS3 is over the 360 by about 15k units OVERALL now.

There are lmost 200k PS3s in japan. Supply has been increasing.

No kidding. Link?

That's so unfortunate that so many japanese are not gonna have anything decent to play this christmas. :( (At least the ones that wasted their money on the ps3).

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Sony. But..... from a complete common sense stand point. There is absolutely NO reason to buy a PS3 at THIS time. Your opinion may vary. ;)

Heh, Microsoft and Sony are really battling it out for last place aren't they?

Yeah, 4 weeks to pass 360s year+ in sales, they are really battling.

Microsoft must be pissed, id have thought they would have done better this time around,

Well, there's always Blue Dragon... if the rumored numbers are correct, that could put them over the PS3 temporarily.

Since when have the Japanese ever really supported an american made/designed product?

I hear Apple sells a couple of iPods in Japan every now and then.

It will be interesting to see if that game can push out some XBOXes while PS3 is still suffering from shortages.

Just maybe, maybe they have a different taste in games?

If you mean the realllllly Japanese games, then yes I have. And I'm not just talking about the bizarre off-the-wall stuff like Katamari, I'm talking about stuff that would never see the light of day here.

A friend of mine works in Japan every now and again, and brings back some really interesting stuff.

The kind of games that make you say "What in the blue fsck did I just play?" and then you walk away with a twitch and a sudden urge to eat pocky

Amazingly yes. Back when I was a naive SNES gamer and started looking into playing games that didn't see release in the states (I have copies of stuff like Seiken Densetsu 3 and Tengai Makyo Zero Far East of Eden) I stumbled upon some random cart. I loaded it up, and wow, yes, it was pr0n, lol. Nothing like GIF quality pr0no. :p

I picked up some games that made we develop a strange urge to go raiding panty stashes and become a corrupt Japanese businessman. :p

I also have Mahjong games, dating sims, bizarre simulator-games, pachinko games with a twist...those are the most tame of some stuff I have seen/played from the east.

On a Japanese gaming forum somewhere they are talking about how crazy North American tastes are...

These arguments about tastes don't really make any sense- yes they have weird, more obscure titles but these aren't the only ones that sell. Mario, resident evil, and tons of other series and genres are wildly popular as well.

If a next gen system in America cost less than $250 and had half a dozen must have titles, it would sell, end of story. We're not gonna look at it and say "oh, there's other games on this other console" we'd buy it in addition. Doesn't japan have, on average, a little bit more disposable income as well?

Because Japan = World.

The Japanese market is interesting. Yes, it's only the third largest market in the world, but due to its immense resources in the gaming industry (Capcom, Konami, Namco, etc), it's hard to make a console succeed without serious help from the Japanese gaming companies.

Of course, the same goes for game console success without support from North American gaming companies. The main difference I can is the jingoistic nature of the Japanese and their reluctance to buy foreign products if a competing product is made on home soil.

All you have to do is look at Sony vs. Apple in the portable music market to see this. Apple has a COMMANDING lead almost everywhere in the world... Except Japan, where Sony's products are quite popular (far more popular than they are anywhere else in the world).

Wow, I can't believe xbox360 is that bad in Japan. You think blue dragon will change sales a lot?

They'll probably double the sales of the console... that's a really sad fact. lol

-thumbs up

Also, Blue Dragon was released in Japan just yesterday.
Kotaku had a nice feature of the hunt for a copy of Blue Dragon. Turns out they're really, really easy to find. In fact, there was no line for it but rather some Gundam or Macross game (I forgot) and Yakuza 2.
lol

When a launch is done correctly (whether that be a game or console), it should be easy to come by. Sadly, I realize how seldom this actually happens. ;)

Actually there were lines, just not where he was. Plenty of the comments posters for the post provided links.

Ashcraft only went to two stores for about ten minutes each. I'd hardly call that representative of anything.

360 is selling like crazy in japan.blue dragon $259.00.
go look it up on the net.

They do have different taste in games. They generally don't care for FPS.

Anyways its easy to see why XBOX 360 does bad in Japan. The Japanese launch was horrible and lots of games for XBOX 360 aren't available in Japan. DOA4 was late in launching which hurt the system in Japan and some games like Oblivion didn't make it or took a long time to get to Japan.

Blue Dragon does give M$ hope though. Hopefully more RPG's come out.

From a common sense point, the included Blu-Ray drive is a huge plus for the PS3 over th Xbox 360 or the Wii, at least if you enjoy watching movies in HD quality.
