I am trying to decide which Xeon 5000 to buy (2.0 or 2.66). I am not sure what future processors will the platform see. A roadmap by Intel says there'll be a Peryn (45nm) derivative for socket 771 (5000 chipset) at the end of 2007. Can anyone confirm that? I can't find any useful info what future Woodcrests Intel will release either (they top out at 3.0 right now).

Not nessecarily. From what I've seen you'll need G1 stepping of the chipset for the 45nm CPUs... and Bensley (the platform) launched @ B3. So people with early boards may not be able to upgrade to 45nm. Also... Blackford is the server chipset, 5000X is workstation which is codenamed Greencreek.

Get the system because it fits your needs right now... because if you are looking towards the future with it you may very well be disappointed. I'll be fine with 2.0 for the next year or two and I'm sure I'll be able to the 3.0 at least down the road. I just ordered it. A bit of cash that thing. Oh, and I got the x1900 XT. Good bye AGP, I'll always love remember ya...
