Melancholy and Infinite Happiness: Dungeon Keeper2 trap editing

Good day to all,
I recently stumbled on a copy of dungeon keeper 2 and installed it post hast. I love the game, but something seemed to be lacking.

Back in the dungeon keeper 1 days I remember the boulder trap being the harbinger of doom rolling and squishing all that dare not run in fear. Not so much in dk2, it leaves much to be desired. Does anyone happen to know how to edit the trap damage? I seem to not be able to find where to in the official dk2 editor.

This may or may not be the correct forum to post this. Yes I also know this is a long shot as well with such an old game. Nothing ventured nothing gained right?

I'm open to any suggestions, whether it be the dk2 editor, hex editor, chanting forbidden incantations by the light of cold pale yellow moon. Anything.

Even if you do not know how perhaps you have a friend that used to, or some long forgotten website with a faq.

Anyway, thanks to all for putting up with my anguished rantings. Have a good one.

I loved this game (and dk1 ofc) but when playing multiplayer eventually it starts to "go back in time" (you'll know what I mean if you've seen it)... it's very depressing as it's an awesome game :(

(sorry i can't actually help :))

This seems to be what you're looking for ;) . You need the 1.7 patch installed.

There're a couple of graphical tweaks you might want:

Open the registry, go to HKCU\Software\Bullfrog Productions Ltd\Dungeon Keeper II\Configuration\Video
and change the value of "Res 1600*1200 Enable" to 1. Opens a 1600x1200 resolution option in the graphics menu.

Open the Properties box for your DKII shortcut, and change the target field to
"<your DKII folder>\DKII.exe" -enablebumpmapping -enablebumpluminance -32bitdisplay -32bittextures
Everything looks a lot better in 32bit, and the bumpmapped lava is just awesome :D . 32bitdisplay seems to make the in-game menu text disappear, but the icons aren't too hard to figure out.

Can't wait to try this, been playing this off and on for awhile, and still shows how awesome Bullfrog was back in the day!

AARGH!

LuminaryJanitor thanks for the tips I didnt know about the 32 bit option; I will have to give it a try.

I have been useing the official editor for a few days now already. Let me tell you there are alot of options you can change with it. I just have not found the one single option Ive been looking for. Trap damage.

I think you can even change the spell damage you cast, no luck with traps thus far. I made a test map with rows of boulders and heros just for option changing purposes. Hmmmm. Back to the grind.

Oops... I should learn to read :D .

I can't get the editor to run, nor can I make any sense of those .kwd files, so I don't think I can really help you...

The only thing I can think of is that the damage is defined elsewhere. For example, the lightning trap may use the same attack as the lightning spell, or the fairy/mistress lightning attack, rather than being directly associated with the trap itself.

Ha, I do that all the time.

I have been seeing a lot of this on some of the few active dk forums. I got mine working by dropping the editor at ‘C:\Program Files\Bullfrog\Dungeon Keeper 2\Data\editor\DK2 Editor’. I also put an additional ‘graphics’ folder with some bitmaps at ‘C:\Program Files\Bullfrog\Dungeon Keeper 2\Data\editor’ and it seemed to work fine for me.

If you have a corrupt version, or no graphics folder pm me if you’re comfortable with something emailed from a stranger and we can get you fixed right up.

With multiple people hammering away at it we my very well be able to craft it into something slightly more evil. ;)

Ah, the version I got (the one I linked to) doesn't come with a graphics folder. Got the Fileplanet version, and it's working fine.

But I still have no idea what to do... I'm assuming you've fiddled with those ambiguous variables in the trap properties, so I don't know where to go from here...

Glad you got it working.

I have indeed been playing with the settings; I also found it expedient to make a simple test map with many premade boulder traps and a toolbox full of heroes for trap smashing purposes.

Under ‘configuration/trap types’ I have tried changing the shot data but it appears to have no noticeable effect on damage. Perhaps I'm wrong on this as I think this is where the damage values are.

Under ‘configuration/shot types’ I tried to set it to not collide with anything as to make it “roll through” enemies such as in DK1; however it still breaks up once it hits any creature.

I'm fairly certain that shot data is key here. What do I know, nothing seems to work in my test maps. Perhaps I'm stymied by my one track approach.

Keeper, your dungeon is full of custard.

Much love to the old Bullfrog classics.

a kick in the nuts to EA for killing them.

...and the ruination of Westwood.

But...but...they make great sports sequels!
