tesfaye said:Very misleading info right there. WinXp versions of "low level" software may not work. I can't understand why people would expect them to. Anyway please note the following:
AntiVirus:
Symantec had a beta AntiVirus program available for Vista since Beta 2 if you had a corporate account.
CA has a 1 year trial for their Vista Antivirus product. There are a couple of others that are Vista compatible. I think Avast is one of them.
CD Burning:
ImgBurn is Vista compatible and works great for burning CD/DVDs along with being a hell of a lot less bloated than Nero or Roxio
Virtual Machines:
Microsoft Virtual Server Enterprise is free and will install on Vista with a couple of tweaks. There are MSDN developer blogs with intructions on how to get it to work.
Disc Defragmentation:
Raxo has a 150 day trial of Perfect Disk 8 that is made for Vista and so far has worked flawlessly.
Virtual CD/DVD drive:
Daemon Tools 4.06 installs and runs without any hacks on build 5744.
I'm enjoying 5744 so far. They finally fixed the sound control panel UI. No more black bars and out of place notches! The Creative Console didn't crash on me and SPDIF on my Audigy 4 works perfectly. I haven't encountered any weird crashes or application hangs so far and Easy Transfer worked perfectly.
pxc said:Aero won't work on my laptop in RC2 using the included drivers or the ones on ATI's site. It was working in both RC1 releases and in Beta 2.
I did, and even reinstalled it fresh in case the upgrade trashed it somehow. Same exact problem: no Aero.ryan_975 said:Try re-running the performance checker thing. I saw that work for someone.
brucedeluxe169 said:Can someone tell me how I can install RC2 from a Windows XP system straight from the hard drive (without burning a DVD)?
Please?
also, how much free space do you need to run vista?
as usual, thanks guys.

Unknown-One said:Well, this sucks. The DVD-Rom in my test system can't read burned DVD's, so I can't install Vista that way...
I know there was some way to extract Windows XP's CD to your hard disk and perform a fresh install from there, is there any way to do this with Vista?
Flyboat said:I install Window Vista RC2 on my computer, Athlon 1200, ATI 9200, 1GB SDRAM
Pro: Installation was very easy. Programs run smoother than I thought. Graphic wise, it is better than window XP.
Con: Can't detect my creative sound card. Can't detest my SOHO PCI network card.
VIsta rating on my computer was 1.

I've got an X2 3088+, 2GB DDR400, 250GB SATA150 HD, and a X1900XT and scored a 4.7.
Flyboat said:You are right. I am going to try it on my second computer, Athlon XP 220+, 1gb DDR400, 9800 pro with 400gb of HDD.

If you have a spare hard drive that's decent then toss it in your E6700 god box and see how the OS performs on that rig. Testing on an old machine won't tell you anything about how it may perform on your main rig.tupak said:I ain't trying no MS beta software on my main E6700 box.
Ok, this was what I found a couple pages back:ryan_975 said:Read back a couple pagtes, I described a way to extract the install files from the image.
Other people have also list other methods to install withoug burning a disc.
And that works if you are going to upgrade from Windows XP, I want to do a fresh install.ryan_975 said:For those who don't have DVD burners and don't want to hassle with virtual drives can still install Vista RC2. Just open the .iso file in a program that can read UDF formats. (I used UltraISO;s free trial). Extract the "Sources" folder to wherever you want it (I put it in C:\) When it's done extracting open the new "Sources" folder (wherever it is that you put it) and run "setup.exe"

Hi,
It seems there is a problem with RC2 if you don't have 1GB of RAM however
they say this will be fixed in the Final release. A gentleman on another
site found this work around.
1/ Ensure that you have the following registry value set to :
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Composition set to 1 (32-bit DWORD)
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\CompositionPolicy set to 2 (32-bit DWORD)
2/ Restart DWM by opening a command prompt with administrative privileges :
- Type 'net stop uxsms'
- Then 'net start uxsms'
It works!
CrazyMrB said:My God. I've just downloaded RC2 twice because the first time, the download manager (one provided by ms) never saved the iso to the hard drive. Guess what, the second time I downloaded it, the dlm didn't save it either. What is going on? I'm running pre RC1 (5536).
Please help.

Awesome. I'll give that a try. I do have 1GB and 128MB is reserved in the BIOS screen for video.jhoffman80 said:I had this issue too, and it turns out its a bug if you have only 512 megs of ram. Then I found this fix and everything is working fine now.

Looks like waiting untill a day or 2 later worked well, im getting a steady 785KB/s all the way, going to finish downloading in under an hour total.
LstOfTheBrunnenG said:That bug has been there for me since RC1. Exit HL2 or even one of their D3D screensavers, and the right monitor's all corrupted.
Easy fix though. Just disable and then enable the second monitor in display properties. That, or use the driver that comes with Vista, in which case no problems at all
