Vista RC 2 On Friday

I gave up on Vista after RC1 mostly due to dumbass Creative not releasing any new drivers for the X-Fi.

Very misleading info right there. WinXp versions of "low level" software may not work. I can't understand why people would expect them to. Anyway please note the following:

AntiVirus:
Symantec had a beta AntiVirus program available for Vista since Beta 2 if you had a corporate account.
CA has a 1 year trial for their Vista Antivirus product. There are a couple of others that are Vista compatible. I think Avast is one of them.

CD Burning:
ImgBurn is Vista compatible and works great for burning CD/DVDs along with being a hell of a lot less bloated than Nero or Roxio

Virtual Machines:
Microsoft Virtual Server Enterprise is free and will install on Vista with a couple of tweaks. There are MSDN developer blogs with intructions on how to get it to work.

Disc Defragmentation:
Raxo has a 150 day trial of Perfect Disk 8 that is made for Vista and so far has worked flawlessly.

Virtual CD/DVD drive:
Daemon Tools 4.06 installs and runs without any hacks on build 5744.

I'm enjoying 5744 so far. They finally fixed the sound control panel UI. No more black bars and out of place notches! The Creative Console didn't crash on me and SPDIF on my Audigy 4 works perfectly. I haven't encountered any weird crashes or application hangs so far and Easy Transfer worked perfectly.

all the tools you have mentioned may have allready been modified/updated to work in Vista, Iam refering to out of the box XP versions.

:( Aero won't work on my laptop in RC2 using the included drivers or the ones on ATI's site. It was working in both RC1 releases and in Beta 2.

Try re-running the performance checker thing. I saw that work for someone.

I did, and even reinstalled it fresh in case the upgrade trashed it somehow. Same exact problem: no Aero.

I guess i'll have to wait until ATI updates their driver to enable it again.

Can someone tell me how I can install RC2 from a Windows XP system straight from the hard drive (without burning a DVD)?

Please?

also, how much free space do you need to run vista?

as usual, thanks guys.

Read back a couple pages, there are several methods mentioned in this thread.

did they release RC2?

Yes, it was released Friday afternoon.

Vista? I like it, it's great. It's like calm between the hurricane. It'll take hax0rs some time to figure it out...

So I'll have like what, a week or two at most? of virus/trojan/zpl0tz free days? (tip of an iceberg -->www.rootkit.com)

heh.

sniggles....

If MS really wanted to make a secure OS, they need to make periodic random kernel mutating os. Make it a moving target ....

Talk about monumental challenge.

The kernel is not totally isolated in the 32bit version if I understand those MSDN videos and articles correctly. The 64bit version is supposed to have a feature where the kernel will reside in random memory locations so it will be somewhat of a moving target. I wish I still had my old links folder, I would have posted the link to the channel9 article on the subject.

Well, this sucks. The DVD-Rom in my test system can't read burned DVD's, so I can't install Vista that way...

I know there was some way to extract Windows XP's CD to your hard disk and perform a fresh install from there, is there any way to do this with Vista?

Read back a couple pagtes, I described a way to extract the install files from the image.

Ohter people have alos list other methods to install withoug burning a disc.

If the image is on your drive then mount it with Daemon tools, Alcohol 120 or some other virtual drive application and run the install from the virtual drive. You can also EXPLORE the the mounted DVD image and copy the files to the location of your choosing and then run the install.

I also think it would be a good idea to turn on the option to display hidden files so everything gets copied.

ISOBuster is a good application for ripping the contents of an image to your hard drive but the last time I used it I remember purchasing a key for it. This was a couple of years ago.

I install Window Vista RC2 on my computer, Athlon 1200, ATI 9200, 1GB SDRAM

Pro: Installation was very easy. Programs run smoother than I thought. Graphic wise, it is better than window XP.

Con: Can't detect my creative sound card. Can't detest my SOHO PCI network card.

VIsta rating on my computer was 1.

Yeah your're just barely meeting the minimum requirements.

I've got an X2 3088+, 2GB DDR400, 250GB SATA150 HD, and a X1900XT and scored a 4.7.

You are right. I am going to try it on my second computer, Athlon XP 220+, 1gb DDR400, 9800 pro with 400gb of HDD.

I ain't trying no MS beta software on my main E6700 box.
If you have a spare hard drive that's decent then toss it in your E6700 god box and see how the OS performs on that rig. Testing on an old machine won't tell you anything about how it may perform on your main rig.

Ok, this was what I found a couple pages back:

For those who don't have DVD burners and don't want to hassle with virtual drives can still install Vista RC2. Just open the .iso file in a program that can read UDF formats. (I used UltraISO;s free trial). Extract the "Sources" folder to wherever you want it (I put it in C:\) When it's done extracting open the new "Sources" folder (wherever it is that you put it) and run "setup.exe"
And that works if you are going to upgrade from Windows XP, I want to do a fresh install.

I'm guessing my way through it at this point. I've got an 80gb hard disk, and I've partitioned off 3gb. Is it safe to assume that if I extract the DVD ISO to that 3gb partition that I should be able to boot the installation from there?

My God. I've just downloaded RC2 twice because the first time, the download manager (one provided by ms) never saved the iso to the hard drive. Guess what, the second time I downloaded it, the dlm didn't save it either. What is going on? I'm running pre RC1 (5536).

Please help.

I had this issue too, and it turns out its a bug if you have only 512 megs of ram. Then I found this fix and everything is working fine now.

From the Windows message boards:
Hi,
It seems there is a problem with RC2 if you don't have 1GB of RAM however
they say this will be fixed in the Final release. A gentleman on another
site found this work around.

1/ Ensure that you have the following registry value set to :

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Composition set to 1 (32-bit DWORD)

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\CompositionPolicy set to 2 (32-bit DWORD)

2/ Restart DWM by opening a command prompt with administrative privileges :

- Type 'net stop uxsms'
- Then 'net start uxsms'

It works!

I had the same problem. It's saving to a Virtual store. Go to C:\User\<user name>\App Data\Virtual Store\ It's in there. There should a folder tree simulating the one to where you wanted it to be saved.

I would suggest not using the DLM from MS, im using firefox atm and I use that download manager, worked fine for me.

Grr, didnt work. I'm installing XP now, lets hope the upgrade works :(

Edit: Forget it, now that I know I wont even be able to test with Aero turned on (not enough RAM) its totaly not worth the trouble.

Awesome. I'll give that a try. :D I do have 1GB and 128MB is reserved in the BIOS screen for video.

FYI at that moment, i was mucking around with ubuntu and I D/L it and burned it in ubuntu. :D

Snipers must love you.

Looks like waiting untill a day or 2 later worked well, im getting a steady 785KB/s all the way, going to finish downloading in under an hour total.

That bug has been there for me since RC1. Exit HL2 or even one of their D3D screensavers, and the right monitor's all corrupted.

Easy fix though. Just disable and then enable the second monitor in display properties. That, or use the driver that comes with Vista, in which case no problems at all :)

This is what has been happening to me when I load up Adobe CS2. You sir, have solved my problem. Verified as a working "work-around" / "solution" under the hardwar in Sig.
