Im in an online class @ my university and one of our assignments is to find a program/software package that is used by our intended major/profession.

I know you dont want to do the work for me, but I will be researching as well. Does anyone know of any Network Design or Management software? I wanted to use Visio as an example as its quite helpful in network design, but my professor wants something less mainstream.

Any ideas?

Here are a few:

Dia - I personally think it sucks but it's free and does visio like diagrams
Gliffy - Hosted Visio replacement, kinda neat, it's all online and web2.0
SmartDraw - Another visio replacement

As for management there are a ton of different applications
Big Sister - an open source Big Brother replacement
Nagios - My favorite, we use this in my NOC to monitor 3 Class 4/5 softswitches, 400 IP phones, 20 servers (DHCP, DNS, TFTP, FTP, WWW...etc), 350 customer NID's, 30 customer side switches, 10 routers, our DC power rack, some DS1 to DS3 concentrators, and our BITS/NTP GPS server
OpenNMS - Haven't personally used this but it's supposed to be pretty nice
Cacti - This is a great one as well, we use it to monitor traffic usage on various equipment and a bunch of other stuff via SNMP.

Hopefully this give you a few places to start.
