How did I kill my vid card? (PS related)

Today I recieved my parts from Newegg for my new Conroe rig but before I attempted to put the new stuff together I wanted to test out my new OCZ 700W GameXStream PS on my old system.

So I disconnected the old PS (an Antec 550w) plugged in the new OCZ PS. I doubled checked everything to make sure everything was plugged in and snug. I then hit the power button and almost immediately I could smell smoke coming out from my rig! I immediately shut down to asses the situation - after plugging back in my old PS it turns out I some how fried my old video card :{ Every time I boot up I have major graphical corrpution. I plugged an old 9700 Pro just to make sure I didn't kill the CPU instead and sure enough I can boot fine with no corruption.

Honest to god I don't know what the hell I did wrong and at this point I'm very reluctant to assemble my new rig with this new OCZ PS. Any thoughts on what happened? It was just a simple unplug/plug in operation, I don't know how I could've messed that up.

BTW, my old video card is BFG 6800 GT OC that's a couple of years old. Do you think BFG will replace it under these circumstances?

That's pretty bizarre. Is there any chance that you had the molex going into the card upside down? If not I'd take a long hard look at the molexes to make sure one wasn't wired incorrectly. I know that it sounds like a long shot but things do happen and slip by the QC guys.

As to the replacement, that's a tough call. I'd call them up and explain the situation to them and let them make the final decision. They might then again they might not. Hard to tell.

You know it could've been from an upside down molex but the thing is with this new OCZ power supply it plugs in effortlessly no matter if it's upside up or upside down. With my older PS connectors you could feel right away if it was going in wrong but with the OCZ there's no indication at all. Damnit that's probably what happened too.

EDIT: Ok noobie question time. My new P5B-Deluxe has a 24 pin EATXPWR connector but my PS only has 20 pins plus a little 4 pin connector. Do I plug BOTH of those into the EATXPWR or just the big 20 pin plug while the little 4 pin plugs into the EATX12V?

I would say give BFG an e-mail and explain it. I had mine go after gaming for 48 hrs straight. BFG replaced it

Oh, boy!

That is a 20+4 pin modular ATX connector, they clip together to form a native 24-pin ATX connector.

The P4 & P4+ connectors snap together to form a native 8-pin EPS connector.

All of this is in the owners manual & stickied at Bleedin Edge.

If you do as you suggested, it will probably destroy your CPU, mobo & possibly the PSU!

Good Luck,
Dave

Thanks for your reply.

Believe me, I tripple checked my OCZ manual and it never said anything about clipping the two together. It's one of those assumed things that people should know but I don't upgrade and swap out parts every six months like you guys do so this new 4+20 plug in was completely new to me. And I've never heard of Bleedin Edge until you mentioned it.
