I'm currently hosted at dreamhost, and previously powweb.

Now I'm considering making another switch to 1and1.

Does anyone have any opinions about them? good or bad?

I'm leaning more towards them because of the [even] cheaper rate than the other two, more space, and webDAV support.

From my research online, I've read bad things in regards to their billing practices (auto-billing customers even though they said not to, etc.) ...... so I'm a little weiry about jumping right into them......

any help would be greatly appreciated in this decision, as they do seem to be a good provider :)

xENo from here had a dedicated server with them and was consistenantly having network issues with them.

They advertised 1500gb of transfer a montha nd couldnt handle 50gb, or 30,000 page loads a day.

When trying to talk to someone he got the run around, so I personaly would stay away from them.

i have a couple of sites hosted with them and i've not had any problems. I'm not running a dedicated server or really high traffic sites though, maybe 2,000-3,000 hits per day.

They host all my sites. (Except one which I haven't migrated yet.)

The prices are cheap, they're not often down. My sites get a total of 2000 hits a day, last I looked.

I have the Windows Developer Plan. It has everything I need, but I wish I could add PHP. And I find their control panel very cumbersome for configuring ASP.Net applications; you have to use DotNetNuke, which isn't easy to setup.

I use them as well as godaddy and i like 1and1 better. Its never down. and it just works.Godaddy is a little bit fidgety. In fact i think i will get rid of them when my time is up..But ya 1and1 is good.

I was on 1and1 and my websites worked flawlessly; however, if you want to upgrade it is impossible. I was on the developer package and I needed a few more SQL databases. In order to get the databases, according to their sales people, I would have to upgrade to a plan that was going to be $50 a month. Sheesh, for that I could get a dedicated server! Also, their support seems really slow compared to my new host, fremonthost.com. I haven't had to upgrade yet; however, it appears that it will be easy. All of my support tickets have a response usually within an hour. Also, I get all of the SQL and mySQL databases that I need, Unlimited!

Also, I had a client using 1and1 to host their email, actually I think it should be "hose". We had lots of problems with email connectivity via pop3.

even though the email capacity is 2GB of storage, is there a limit to the actual number of emails in the boxes?!

does webdav work as advertised?

has anyone tried quitting there service? is it painless? (hopefully I would never need to do this, but just in case)

any other quirks about 1and1 I should consider???

thanks for all the great info so far :p

I have their free professional package from waaaaaaaaaay back in the day when they first started as a businesss.

My free package is pretty slow.. but that's probably because it's free. Thats the only real feedback I can give you about them. They seem pretty good otherwise.

i too have read some bad things about 1and1. but thats mainly their cust support. as i am new to this and would need to the support. for that reason i did not choose them.

i looked around for about a month sent emails to various companies, used their online support feature if they had it. from reviews and feedback i went with HostGator .

their support has been awsome and fast. the site runs fast. alot of options. but im not sure about the webdav part. i looked but didnt see it might hook up with them on the online chat and ask.. i dont even know what it is so i cant be sure.

You don't have PHP? I haven't seen many good hosts not have all the SSI support and SQL support you need. Main limitaions are how many tables/databases you want. I never thought of that, Id just assume it would be there by default.

they do offer PHP in the Linux hosting package. which makes sense since I'd assume the vast majority of those who use the Windows host would be using ASP or .NET. it would still be nice if they installed it though, cuz I'm in the 1% of goofballs that prefers using a WIMP.

Nope; no PHP. Windows shared hosts that offer PHP seem pretty rare. I know they exist, but they're not common. (Windows shared plan hosts that offer SQL Server aren't very plentiful, either -- and they end up limiting you by database size, since that's a far more meaningful dimension.)

Thats odd, I wouldnt have even thought of it, I'd assume it all came with a package. I guess they can push their software more .... but if they simply allowed the other's as well, I think it would benefit them more.

Thats like saying if you want php/perl go elsewhere when its very very easy to implement that on windows machines ..... proprietary over-rules $$$ in Microsoft!?!?!?!. Thanks for the heads up. Ill make sure of that on hosting when picking a plan. I don't do any asp, .net, or vb of any sort. If i want vb type apps ill just use java.

I've had 1and1 for ~ 9 months. ( linux home )

When I first signed up, they had a problem with their email servers and it was taking 6 hours for the server to send out mail. It took a day for them to fix it, but everything with that has been fine since.

My site went down one time. I emailed them and they told me it was a problem with IE. I don't use IE and they just made a huge assumption that I did. I asked to talk to someone else and the other person had it back up in 5 minutes.

Also, the admin.1and1.com page was using crappy browser sniffing at one time and blocking certain versions of Opera. I let them know and I showed them the exact problem, but they didn't believe me. They said that I was wrong and it was my browser. I kept trying. Finally, I got someone from Opera to tell them the same thing that I told them and it was fixed like that.

Also, if I ask them more than 1 question, they only answer the first. My replies usually go like this, "Thanks. Could you please answer my other questions?". Then, they'll answer the next one and I'll go, "Thanks, Could you answer the next one?", until I get them all answered. It's pretty funny.

The webmail they provide to interface with your imap accounts sucks, but I setup squirrelmail, so it's not a problem.

Depsite the quirkyness with support, it's worth it and I'm staying with them.
