I've been out of the "scene" for ages, but now I need help from the techerati.

Here's the deal - I got an x2 3800+ from...um, a certain bay if you will, and when it arrives I find that the IHS is just LAYING on there. As in it's sliding around loose.

So, assuming this chip isn't already DEAD, what is my best option for getting it up & running?
CAN you use the stock hs/fan w/out the IHS?
If no - sticking with aircooling, what would be a substitute hs/fan to use on the naked core?

I'd rather stick with the stock hs/fan so I may just clean the chip up and reglue the ihs...
again, assuming it isn't already toast.

if you use the stock heatsink, make sure you clip it into the retension bracket, then attach the bracket to the motherboard by screwing things down evenly. you might have to sand down the standoffs on the bottom to make proper contact with the core.

if you don't do that, the angled force from the attachment method will most likely chip the core and kill it.

I just put paste on both sides of the ihs and set it on the cpu and use it like nothing happened. You will most likely have to sand the bracket's underside otherwise.

did the auction describe the cpu as de-lidded?

That does not sound very clever, I would consider filing a item not as described claim ..

What was their feedback, and was their picture?

Just curios. .

there ya go - described as "lightly used" & the image is just the retail box (which I did receive actually)

in retrospect I probably should have thought twice seeing that it says both "I'm using it right now" and "I don't know how it overclocks because I've never used it."

so no mention of a popped top

if I can get the ihs back on & get it working then cool, I'll let it go at that
what really concerns me is that I just got screwed & somebody sent me a cpu that they had killed by jackin around with it

If I were you I would go with something like the Zalman. They completely remove the need for the retention bracket, and will ensure full contact with the die.

agreed - zalman is shipping & we'll give it a shot.
I have some AS adhesive here somewhere so I can always put the ihs back on.

of course the idiot who sold it to me isn't answering my messages now either.

I popped the top off my 3800 X2 to replace the thermal paste with AS. Then I put the IHS back on and sealed it with black silicone gasket sealant (you can find it in any automotive store / aisle). Dropped my temps and works just fine.

I initially tried running without the IHS but had to many issues with getting good contact without crushing the core, so I opted for putting it back on.

I should be getting some AS + AS adhesive + the zalman 7700 either today or tomorrow (hope) so I'll have what I need to attempt it sans first or put it back on as needed.

would it boot up with the ihs not glued on, but just laying on there?
someone suggested that, but it seems like that method + the stock amd hs (clamp style) wouldn't be so good.
