Blu-Ray PlayStations won't play Blu-Ray discs
Sony's new Blu-Ray equipped PlayStations won't be able to play Blu-Ray DVD movies, because they couldn't meet all the requirements set out by the cartel that controls Blu-Ray DRM.

Vincent Bautista, Sony's product manager for data storage, told CNET.com.au that due to copy protection issues and lagging software development, the drive will only play user-recorded high-definition content from a digital camcorder, and not commercial movies released under the BD format.

Bautista says that one of two reasons for this is the fact that commercial content is encrypted with High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), which can only be decrypted using a HDCP-compliant graphics card that offers DVI or HDMI connections. Since there are currently no PCs for sale offering graphics chips that support HDCP, this isn't yet possible.

Umm....That article says nothing about PS3 or even mentions the word Playstation. This is their first PC Blu-Ray drive. Where did you see Playstation or PS3 mention anywhere in that article?

That could be a problem in the future, but I thought they decided to lock HD content to HDCP-only in a few years so theoretically the PS3 should play the early versions...? Or is that only HD-DVD and they're still going with HDCP-only in BD? If the BluRay drive can't play BluRay movies in the PS3, there goes that selling point.

lol. I highly doubt if sony is going to let this happen to the PS3's drive (but who knows). I got an idea though... how about we wait till it's out instead of making assumptions?

Selective reading? The PS3 will definately play blu-ray movies. CES even demo'ed blu-ray movies on PS3.

This is about HDCP graphics cards. Which will be out next year, or whenever ATI/Nvidia releases their next cards.

Before we listen to rumors, or details that havn't been confirmed, we need to realize that Sony isn't stupid. Intensely arrogant, but not stupid.

I have only read that the PC drive will not playback movies, but i hope the PS3 playback is better than the PS2 video playback.

On a side not, if a PC blue-ray drive costs $900 (and will not play movies) the PS3 is $300 under that, how many PC drives does sony plan on selling, and how this may point out how huge of a loss they are really going to take on the PS3

Since new movies are using hdcp, doesnt that mean the $500 ps3 wont play them (no hdmi)? I thought some people were saying hdcp would barely be used in the beginning.

This could be true, so in part the OP's point may be valid, if sony is blaming PC blue-ray's problem on no HDMI video cards, the lower end PS3 will not play them because of the lacking HDMI point,

The plot thickens!!

The cheaper version won't play movies when the ICT deal is implemented. Who knows when that will be though. <shrug>

Not atleast until 2012, and it's the same for the hd-dvd drive for 360. I'm guessing the deal will be remade then.

I think you are confusing things. The movies themselves use AACS for the copy protection/DRM, HDCP is used from the player to the display (if using HDMI/DVI).

The PS3 will be able to play BR movies (indeed, read many of the blu-ray reviews-- Even when hooked up via component inputs, they can watch BR in 1080i no-problems.)

Also, I believe you are confusing HDCP and ICT. Taking this from Wikipedia (link goes to HD-DVD entry, but this applies to both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, they use the same copy protection technology)

In addition, HD DVD players must follow AACS guidelines pertaining to outputs over analog connections. This is set by a flag called the Image Constraint Token (ICT), which restricts the resolution for analog outputs without HDCP to 960×540. The decision to set the flag to restrict output ("down-convert") is left to the content provider. Warner Pictures is a proponent of ICT, and it is expected that Paramount and Universal will implement down-conversion as well [8]. As of March 2006, 5 of the 6 studios releasing HD DVD content have announced they will not use ICT/down-conversion for the time being [9]. AACS guidelines require that any title that implements the ICT must clearly state so on the packaging.

With the ICT flag, and without a HDCP connection, It'll play movies, but you can read the restrictiions in the link above.

The article is on the Sony BWU100A blue ray drive for the pc.

I think we've established this as a mistake, and have enlightened the OP.
