Hey all, I am looking to buy a new macbook pro and was planning on waiting until wwdc is over to see if there are any announcements. I have been convincing myself to spend the extra money and get the top of the line 15.4" because thats usually how I am with things like this. However, I came accross a great deal today on a 15.4 mbp 1.83 version and am strongly considering it. I really don't think I will notice the difference from 1.83 to 2.16 ghz or the 128 to 256mb vram. The things I will use this mostly for are:

web
music
e-mail
office
matlab/mathematica
programming/c/python
cadence/orcad
the occasional cs source round

I guess I am getting advice from you guys if I should go ahead and jump on this deal to save myself $550+ (and probably not notice a difference) or if it would still be worth the wait and risk losing this awesome deal. Thanks!

i'd wait, if you can, just in case.

but if you do jump on this deal, spend some of that money you'd be "saving" and get a 2 gig RAM kit from newegg or something for it. the 512 megs that come with it won't cut it.

i went ahead an jumped on the deal because i don't think that there will be a huge real-world performance difference for what i do. i am posting from my brand new macbook pro right now, this thing rocks! now i just need to get that 2gb ram and i'm set...

Congrats on the purchase - I just picked one up a few weeks ago. You're going to love it!

out of curiosity, what all did you get and for how much? not concerned about where you got it all..

I'd guess refurb from apple.com, $1549

Ah. I looked at those, but Apple made me pay tax on top of that, so it ended up being almost $1700. If there was someplace I could get one for $1500 with no tax, I'd be all over it.

Link to $1500 deal from macconnection

According to their help thing,

Orders shipped to Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee are subject to sales tax. For education and government accounts, unless a Tax Exempt Certificate is received, orders shipped to California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and the District of Columbia are subject to tax. Please forward your Tax Exempt Certificate to us and your account status will be updated; any tax applied will be credited upon receipt of certificate.

So does sales tax apply to the states in the 2nd list for regular folk?

Not unless you have an education or government account.

Not to poo-poo on that offer or anything, but the rebate will take 2 - 3 months.

In the meantime the price remains almost $1700.

MacConnection also charges a 15% restocking fee for all non-defective returns.

WWDC is just one week away.
