Here is an article for discussion by those of you who are bored and have wondered why Moore has created the "Wii60" phenomenon. It's a great topic for discussion since a lot of you enjoy the "console war" around here, and it is an interesting read on why the competition may be complimenting the Wii time and time again and why they probably shouldn't. Note that I will likely be a Wii60 owner as well, but I find that the recent comments from EA's PR VP may hold some water...

Everybody's saying that the Nintendo Wii is so unique that it's going to be the second system people buy, meaning if you own a 360 or a PS3, you'll probably also buy a Nintendo Wii. The funny thing is, some people say that discursively, like it's some sort of dig at Nintendo - and what they don't get is that if you're second on everybody's system, you're first overall.

**Possible Noob Question****

I'm at work so I can't do much research.... who are Harrison and Moore? What have they done / who do they work for? Thanks.

/nubbiness.

I was watching the video of Sonic for the Wii on youtube.com. I'd bet that 80% of the population would not be able to tell that the PS3 and X360 are a bajillion times faster than the Wii graphically.(when gaming on a SD TV, maybe even a EDTV)

easy.

"your enemy's enemy is your friend"

or

"if you can't beat em', join em'"

That would be Phil Harrison, President, Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, and Peter Moore, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President, Interactive Entertainment Business, Entertainment and Devices Division.

Peter Moore and Phil Harrison are basically the top PR heads for Microsoft and Sony respectively (kinda like Reggie for Nintendo) and they have both been saying "hey, get our system but get a Wii, too! it's great".

You know what? The Wii may have inferior specs, but I don't think that they are as inferior as many believe, at least in an SD comparison.

For instance, look at XBox 360 launch software: Perfect Dark Zero.

These are final screens from a first generation 360 title. First screens from this title looked a lot worse.

Then look at this pre-release screenshot from a Wii first-gen titleRed Steel.

A game that is months from release and certainly will improve visually, much like Perfect Dark did.

1. They aren't 'praising' it at all.
2. Moore stated in an interview that one could simply afford both a 360 and a Wii for the price of the PS3.

3. Sony has a track record of trashing Nintendo, and they did so with many comments during their E3 press conference.
4. Microsofts respects Nintendo.
5. Wasted thread.

Well I KNOW you're incorrect because I was at E3 and played both Sonic for the PS3/360 and Sonic Wildfire for the Wii.

Wildfire sucked ass, it was a timed course/racing game and not a true Sonic adventure game.

The problem with comparing launch titles is this. The 360 has a HUGE learning curve and we all KNOW graphics are going to take a HUGE leap. The Wii on the other hand is using very similar Gamecube confiugurations in order to make producing a game for it much easier... the curve will me minimal if noticable at all.

1 year from now Wii games will look just as they do at launch... the hardware hasn't changed much so developers are already pushing the development kits to near full limit. You make a valid point, but you failed to understand the difference between the hardware inside each system.

Please, do me a favor and post a picture of Red Steel vs. say .. Mass Effect or Gears of War... THAT would be a fair comparison. Perfect Dark Zero has probably some of the worst graphics the 360 can offer. I love you how pick that title... LOL.

edit. I'll just add that I get sick and tired of people thinking the Wii will compare AT ALL to the PS3 and 360 one year from now. I mean quite honestly... everyone trying to argue that will get a good taste of their own foot once the door is blown open.

Just wait.

Holy sh!t, be a little more objective, will you?

First of all, Sonic Wild Fire is being billed by major gaming jouralists as the 'true 3d coming of classic Sonic". Whether it ends up being that is up in the air, but let me tell you - most of the 3D sonic games have SUCKED. Why? Because they try to be platformers and fail, where the original sonic was about breakneck speeds - much like the pretty Wildfire. It received a great deal of praise at E3 (much more than the 360/PS3's Sonic platformer), and likely for good reason

Second, Peter Moore said he had a great time with the Wii at E3 - that constitutes praise. Just mentioning that you should also purchase the competition constitutes praise in a manner of speaking.

Thirdly, when can you show us the final Wii devkit? You substantiate that there is no power left to tap, but you do not know this.

Please, do me a favor and post a picture of Red Steel vs. say .. Mass Effect or Gears of War... THAT would be a fair comparison. Perfect Dark Zero has probably some of the worst graphics the 360 can offer. I love you how pick that title... LOL.

This has to be one of the stupidest statements I've ever seen you make. That's not a fair comparison at ALL.

How would a PRE-RELEASE first-gen Wii title comapre at all to a pre-release 360 second-gen title? The comparison between Perfect Dark (first gen 360 title) and Red Steel (pre-first-gen Wii title) are perfectly valid. Nobody in their right mind thinks that the visuals on the Wii will compare to what eventually will be tapped out of the 360 or PS3 - but there *IS* room to tap (approximately twice to three times that of the Gamecube), there WILL be a learning curve and an improvement in visuals over time, and the Wii is not simply some incapable previous-gen system. I think Red Steel and Mario Galaxy prove that quite nicely - just as that screenshot comparison does - in SD.

This article is not about visuals, however - it is about how Nintendo may be a bigger threat than Moore or Harisson care to admit (though Sony admitted it quite nicely by putting an accelerometer in their controller last-minute). And to be honest, it is. It's almost unheard-of to tell your customers to go buy the competition's machine, especially in this so-called 'console war'.

heh my first post...

Anyways, like you guys said somewhere in the post was that nintendo is always changing how we play, for instance like the DS, the reason why they did so well with that is because the games are actually really fun with the stylus, and as for the Wii its going to be really cool how it is going to end up. Heh the only thing wrong with the Wii is how are you going to play it on a small tv?

Maybe I'm wrong but I remember Sonic being all about racing through the levels as fast as you can? Sonic=Speed?

I dont understand where all the hate is coming from. Yes we know that the graphics wont be as good as 360 and ps3 but you have to admit that for half the price of the 360, the graphics arent bad at all. And since when is gaming all about graphics? Its about having fun playing a game. Stop being a troll and realize that even though they may not have the best hardware out there, Nintendo will end up being even in the next gen race. That was the point of this thread and article.

THANK YOU. You hit the nail on the head. Nintendo knows that they dont have the biggest and baddest hardware out there, but they do know that they can come up with very unique ideas and make them a lot of fun. I love playing Brain Age using the stylus, playing Mario Kart on wireless internet, and going back to Mario roots with New Super Mario Brothers. Does the PSP have better graphics? yes! But if you ask most people about how fun the psp games are, they will agree that they dont compare to the DS games.

If you look at the sales figures, you will see that Nintendo is succeeding in this strategy in the mobile gaming world. The DS Lite and the DS games are leading in mobile sales. Half the price? Check. Unique gameplay? Check. Fun games? Check! Sound familiar? (For those who can't connect the dots, its the exact same as the next gen consoles)

I don't understand how Harrison thinks that people who buy a PS3 will even have any money left over to buy a Revolution. As for the revolution, I believe that it may be hitting a nice sweet price point ratio in this market. It remains to see how well it sells, but there has been a lot of positive hype for Nintendo in recent months, while Sony has gotten trashed in many editorials. It's all about setting the price point necessary in order to push the number of units that are required for your buisness model. I have an X360 and will most likely add a Revolution to my collection providing we find out for sure whether all games will at least support 16:9 widescreen. I just hope they finally release some details soon.

Damn I hate that "Wii60" word thing ... Die Moore.

That was invented by the people behind http://www.wii60.com/ , Moore had nothing to do with it. Hell, probably not even them. I know the term came around pretty much instantly after the price of the PS3 was released.

Nintendo has told developers it's up to them how they display their games, but they strongly suggest widescreen (I believe all or almost all games so far have the widescreen as standard, or an option). I also believe they are expecting ED (480p) for everything including original titles built for the Virtual Console, as well I believe even the retro games on the Virtual Console will be displaying in 480p, according to the reps at E3.
