anybody try any of these out yet?

PX-755SA DVD±R/RW CD-R/RW internal Serial ATA $129
PX-750A DVD±R/RW CD-R/RW $89
PX-760A DVD±R/RW CD-R/RW internal E-IDE $119

I'm a big fan of Plextor drives but the prices are almost double of the next comparable drive. I was also hoping they would come out with a lightscribe drive. Atleast there is another SATA dvd burner out there now.

edit: newegg's got the 760A for $100

I have ordered the Plextor PX-755SA for my new (building right now) HTPC.
Ordered the SATA version although it was a bit expensive because I wanted to minimize cabling.

Let's see what I get when it eventually arrives here.

crap no dfi boards are listed ..
i really want a sata one .. i hate having ide cables

Chances are good it will still work. Plextor is pretty good about getting bios fixes out for stuff like this too, how is DFI? I'd expect one or the other to get out a fix pretty quick if they don't work together. Looking at their compatibility list, it looks like they haven't tested any DFI boards---which I suppose is better than them having it listed as failing. :)

Plextor made the first cd-rom drive I ever bought, a 4x for around $450, lol. I still buy plextor whenever I build a new machine or upgrade, I don't care if they're more expensive. I have a firm feeling I'm getting what I'm paying for.

I wouldnt exactly believe that. There are numerous posts on newegg with the belief that the burner would work with a board that is not on the list.....and every single one of them left a review that said it didnt work.

according to people on the dfi forums .. they work .. a bunch of them have them ..

my only question im waiting to be answered before i buy is ..
can you boot from a SATA drive .. like if ur trying to boot from cd to install windows ?

has anyone gotten the PX-755SA?

I'd like to get one but my MB (a8n-sli premium) isnt listed on the supported page. id hate to buy it and it not work....unless I upgraded to the a8n32

I would sure as hell hope so, otherwise what would be the point of putting a SATA one in?

I may snag one of these tomorrow.

I also prefer slot loaders, but oh well, for now a SATA drive will do me a lot better than my apparently failing NEC of years past.

if u wind up getting the SATA burner just post your results with it.....i been trying to find a cheap a8n32 to support it but if it works with my a8n-sli premium then i wont have to buy the other one

I have the Asus A8N-SLI Premium and the 755sa drive they both run great together. I havn't had a problem with any of my burns. I even burnt at 16x it took less then 5min and 30sec.
It's a great drive and has a lot of cool features like able to put 1gig of data on a cd. I hear a lot of good things about it. If you are not to picky about having sata or pata then I would suggest a nec or liteon drive at half the price. I am just trying to switch everything over to sata since a lot of mobo's seem to be dropping Pata drives in the future.

sweet....so the 755sa works with the A8N-SLI Premium. there was a link on plextor's page that showed only a couple boards that it worked with and only the A8N32 was on there from ASUS (AMD).

I also am looking to keep everything SATA in the case so PATA is not an option. Thanks for the feedback!

I have the 716sa and love the sata drive.

$.02

i had the 716sa and I really liked it.....however the 755sa is an all black drive and its a 16x dvd burner 10x dual layer

I think you just have to worry about pluggin it into the first send of Sata connecters and not use the Raid Controller. Other then that it should work perfectly.

I think that after the release of intel's new southbridge (no more IDE) there will be a lot more DVD burners with SATA connection.

I really don't see myself paying the premium for the plextor drive. I used to be a big fan of theirs, but I really cannot justify their prices anymore. Maybe I am missing something, but with the 3rd party firmwares to "disable" region codes for the NEC drives, I don't see what plextor has to offer.

If I had more funds available, I'd certainly buy one though, just for the SATA connectivity.

You can flash the plextor as well to disable region code. Also it's a well known brand with a very good history of quality. Last you don't have to worry if it's a knock off that was made for the black market :) NEC is in some trouble because of what happened i like to stick with a warrenty that will be around for awhile.

Will do. Sadly I don't have any nice premium media here at the moment to try and go full tilt with, but I'll see about ordering some of what Plextor recommends for this thing.

My new PX-755SA should be here tomorrow. Had to order one online as my local store didn't have em in stock. They all sold out, which could be a good sign, or the calm before the storm when people start returning them.

I have high hopes for it, but in any case it will do me better than my failing NEC drive of many years.

Ok, its here and installed finally.

System found it no problem and NERO loves it.

Using an ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard for those who are wondering.

What tests would you like to see run on it?

I'm going to go out later and see if I can get some 16X media locally, though I'm doubtful.

It came with version 1.02 firmware which I updated to the 1.04 that just came out.

Thanks Limahl

I'll go ahead and pick it up with no fears....what version of Nero are you running?

I'm running NERO 6.6 atm.

Couple of things I've noticed so far about it, its bloody quiet. You'd barely notice that its running at all.

Second, for making my PS2 backups, it does a great job at 2X speed, whereas my old NEC even at 2X couldn't make a high enough quality burn for the PS2 to run it without a lot of trouble.

So far I'm pleased, but I need to lay hands on some 16X DVD media to really do some testing. All I've got here is a ton of 4X and a little 8X left.

I read (on some forums) that these drives just have a PATA converter covered up nicely in there... is this still true? (SATA -> PATA inside the drive)

Not sure how I could tell short of popping the case, and I'm not too keen on doing that just yet.

Under NERO 6 it listed the drive as being on a SATA adapter, but under NERO 7 it now lists it as being on an IDE adapter. Sort of odd. I updated my NERO copy to the newest to see if that would help with the 1.04 firmware issue but it didn't.

I did run into some problems burning some discs after I went to the 1.04 firmware. Everything had been ok with the 1.02 so I went back to that one and it seems to be working ok yet again.

I picked up a pack of Verbatim DVD+R 16X discs like the one they give you with the drive, and also a pack of Verbatim CD-R 52X discs to work with.

I was out all day yesterday and might be out a while today, but I'll try to do some burns and post back asap.

EDIT - Ok had time to do a couple of burns before going out so figured I'd post em up.

A full DVD on the 16X media only hit about 13.5X with PowerRec enabled. With PowerRec off it hit 16.1X at the end and was at 12X at the 50% mark. The last 10% varied between 15.3-16.1X speed. PowerRec kills it a bit, but even at 13.5X I'm not complaining at the moment. Both DVD's played fine in my SONY player here. Total burn time with Lead in and Lead out was 6 mins 58 seconds. I can live with that. ;)

A full CD only hit about 38X with PowerRec on. With it off it hit 48X no problem.

As this is still a relatively new toy, I'll likely be leaving PowerRec on just to be sure the drive is writing discs that are reliable. Its still bloody faster than the 4X drive I just got rid of.

The only DL disc I have here is only 2.4X so until I can find some 10x ones, I won't be able to test that out at all.

Ok I can confirm a few other things now after a nightmarish afternoon.

Suddenly while trying to burn anything, the drive would just stop, and the system would be almost totally locked, requiring a shut down, turn back on to get access to the drive again.

A few emails to tech support and a run through of the built in diagnostic mode revealed nothing.

Now this PC had been installed and running almost nonstop for close to a year, so needless to say it had a buttload of extra software installed of various types for things I'd tried out and then never used again.

So, figuring it was an omen of sorts, I opted to wipe the hard drive and clean install. Reducing driver overload crap can only yield good things I figured.

Firstly, you can boot from the drive and install from it no problem, in fact it was the fastest I think I've ever seen WinXP install. The drive is quick. It took far less than the estimated 39 mins to install to my WD Raptor HD.

Second, it seems things are sorta back to working ok again, though I've yet to get time to burn off many discs at this point.

Its still a little touch and go right now. The drive behaves a little differently than my old one did and has different options that I'm not used to working with, so I'm learning a little as I go.

Let me know if there's anything else you guys wanna know about it.
