ok so i have this old compaq that im trying to make really nice (well at least for its time).

so my question is whats the fastest Pentium II cpu? and if you know how much do they run for nowdays?

I cant remember exactly when they stopped, for some reason im thinking 500mhz but its so long ago. They are worth basically nothing, maybe $5 for the cpu.

450 is also the slowest Pentium III.
you might be able to run a P3 in there, I've got a few laying around, 500-733mhz.

Yeah most boards that ran PII's on 100MHz bus are able to run a PIII Katmai processor up to 600MHz.

They were good CPUs... boring, but stable. I have fond memories of my very first build... PIII 450MHz.

Actually, depending on the board, you may be able to run 100FSB Coppermines in addition to Katmais, and they go right on up to 1100MHz.

I remember when everyone made a big deal about P3 and breaking the 500 MHZ.

I got my 550 mhz thats right! I had the extra 50 in to brag about. You should be able to get p3 for pretty cheap as well.

I remember paying like 1500 for my prebuilt system witha p3 and integrated tnt2. camewith a monitor so tahts why it was so much. Man times have changed.

Eesh I knew I was close, I think the only p2 I had was the 333, then I of course jumped on the 300A celeron and got 464 :p Those were fun days for sure.

Double check that motherboard and make sure it's not a 440LX or 440EX, those only support 66Mhz FSB.

You want the 440BX chipset. Though I'm assuming that system has an Intel based chipset, there are third party chipsets for example like the VIA Apollo Pro 133 you should be aware of.
