My 360 Just Died

Well, I think I have a faulty 360 to report (this ones for you StevieP!! ;)). Whenever I turn it on, it will either freeze while booting up or within a couple of minutes into a game. Then it just becomes completely unresponsive (with the exception of the power button). I would be alot more pissed off if I had not just gotten my 2 7900's. I'm sure those will keep me busy for a while until I get a new box. My one question for you guys is this: can I hook up a USB hard drive to the thing and copy my savegames to that, or do I have to go out and buy a memory card? I dont have one here, but I do at work (a detachable HDD that is). I wouldnt give a shit about the save games except for the fact that:

I REFUSE TO FUCKING START OBLIVION ALL OVER AGAIN

sigh. Oh well, this is why I got the extended warranty in the first place.

I'm not happy that your 360 broke or something :p
But I don't think without modification you can change that HD for another one. Either you're getting another HD ($100) or a memory card ($40 or $50 or whatever it is). Or maybe when you make the phone call to Microsoft you can ask if they'll transfer your save games for you? You could always sell your X360 copy of Oblivion and play it with your SLI setup - it would look quite a bit prettier in a higher resolution if you've got the screen for it :)

I'm confused, you have the regular HD right (Premium 360)? MS Support will instruct you to keep the HD and just send back the console. Yer good--they'll do ya right. :) 1-800-4MYXBOX.

HDDs can be freely swapped between Xbox360 units. Assuming you send only your core console in for repair, all of your saved games will be safe.

Wow, that sucks and you have my sympathy. Since the hard drive is detachable, ask them whether they'll need it or not. As someone above said, I don't think they'll need it, which means your save games will be safe.

Is your 360 one of the first ones from launch?

Have you called Microsoft to check on this? When I called them about when my warranty runs out, they had added on another month or so. Might as well give it a try and see what they say. Also, they let me buy their extended warranty even though I was past the deadline. If that is an option, then you can cancel your BB warranty and get the MS one. That is assuming you want to go through the effort.

how the hell do you go about cancelling the BB warranty? It is hard enough to even return something to BB

i second this. i never bothered to register my 360 after i bought it (january), so when it broke in late april, it was out of warranty. the guy on the phone support line was really helpful and went ahead and registered my system, giving me another 90 days of warranty. he also said that you can buy the extended warranty at any time after the 90 days are over.

Yep, they extended launch Xboxes to 6 month warranties (because something was indeed wrong...memory I personally suspect). I think they'll hook you up. Call 'em!

AKNF,

Anyone suggesting memory transfer devices and/or services doesn't know jack about the 360 or return policies. You DO NOT send your hard drive in when getting repairs.

Take the advice of others and call MS, see what they can do for you. Return service is fast and you'll have a console back before you know it.

We feel for you bro. It sucks to have something go bad on you that you paid that kind of money for and lame advice just makes it worse. People making fun of you becasue your Xbox 360 needs service / replaced are just being a jackass. Don't sweat it, give the 1-800 number a call and see if they can't fix you up. Keep us posted.

Mine started the same thing last night. I mean the exact same thing. I think it must be the dvd drive because I have no problems playing live arcade games. When I put in fight night or burnout it locks up within minutes. Sad day :(

Microsoft extended all 360 warranties. I bought mine on launch and it died like 3 weeks ago, they took it back no questions asked, and they told me to keep the HDD. You only have to send in the console.

Did you have a dream about Bill Gates pointing his finger and laughing at you last night too?

Cause THAT would really be freaky.

Seriously, I dont think it is the DVD drive because sometimes it wont even finish booting up. I'll call Microsoft when I get home today, I'd rather go that route than BB.

Thanks guys

Microsoft has been pretty damned good about replacing defective hardware even when it's far out of warranty.

They replaced my original Xbox (Thompson drive) during the Samsung era, and that was over the course of years. Just be assertive and insist that the problem is their fault, but don't be rude about it.

1. CALM DOWN
2. Remove the HDD from your 360
3. Call 1-800-4MY XBOX
4. Send in your 360 w/o your HDD.
5. Wait
6. Get your 360 back (some ppl got HDDs back with theirs ;) )
7. Put your original HDD back on.
8. Come back and appologize for freaking out.

Excuse me, apologize for what??

Anyway, just got off the phone with Microsoft. Its a no go with them, I would have to purchase the extended warranty. Since I already have one with Best Buy, I'll just go through them. It will probably take longer though.

I actually just did this. You just tell them you don't want it anymore, and they will give you back what you back what you paid for it, minus a prorated amount for how long you've had the plan.

Yeah, I don't think you need to apologize. Just hang on to your hard drive, if possible, when you return it to best buy.

How long do you have to sign up for the extended warranty through Microsoft? Also did they fix whatever problem they were having at launch in the newer made models (mine was manufactured on 4/20), I'm wondering if its worth paying the $60 for the warranty or not.

when i called microsoft after my 360 bit the dust, the guy told me that i could buy the extended warranty any time after the manufacturer's warranty expired. i don't know if that's the official policy or not.

That is the impression I got as well.

Well, I finally got my the gift card from Best Buy today. I will probably go pick up a new 360 tonight or tomorrow. When I sent the thing in I kept the hard drive even though I was told specifically to include everything that came in the original box.

Take that Best Buy, I fooled you. MUAHAHAHAHAHA :p

I figured they wouldnt know the difference though. So at the very least I got a free hard drive out of this, and it only took a month. Have any good games come out in the last month??

wait, so you sent in the 360 and they gave you a gift card? They didn't even give you a new one?
