This is prob a noobe question, but I am not sure of the right prog or service to make this happen.
First this is a home network and remote desktop works great! I want to take over the current dektop without user having to ask for assitance. Basically I want to see what they see without having to ask permission. Watchn the kids ;).
Any help recommendations would be appreciated

vnc is slick... I've used it for this type of application and the people on the otherend didn't even know it.... they were busily surfing 'adult' sites and had NO idea I could see them.

I like vnc too (cross-platform ftw). I'm not sure about other vnc clients but I use RealVNC and there's an icon in the system tray that'll change colour to signify if someone is connected. So that kinda hinders any anonymity, if that's what you're looking for that is. I don't know if there's a way to hide the icon (too lazy to find out) or if another vnc client would work better but you'll be able to set it up to login without any notification to the user.

If it's NT/2000/XP then also look @ Dameware MiniRemote. It can push it's own client to the PC and then you can watch. Configured correctly, the kids'll never know you're there...

Yeah, something like VNC comes to mind. I use TightVNC for some sysadmin duties. I think there is a way to hide the tray icon via a registry edit so no one will know you you're connected. If I find one I'll post it.

Of all the VNC flavors, I prefer Ultra VNC
You can hide the icon...you can make it so it's totally hidden from the computer user. You can disable that tray icon, and disable any ability of the logged in user to do anything to the VNC Server service.

first let me say thnx for the quick replies!!
second, so ultra vnc, freeware from what I see, will allow me to connect remotely to computers on my network while simultaniously allowing users to work on their dekstop?

if thats the case then this is the prog I need!!

Yes..it's free
As are most of, if not all, of the various flavors of the original program, VNC. It's open source...so there are lots of versions..all just customized versions of the same basic program.

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

When you install it...you'll get to a point where it asks you to set a password for the "server" component...and you'll also see a row of checkbox..one of which will install it as a "service". You want to do that..so it automatically starts every time you reboot the PC. After the first reboot..you'll see a blue eye sitting in the systray..double click it..to bring up its properties. You'll see your options there..to hide the systray icon, lots of other things there.

UltraVNC also allows authenticating against AD which is the biggest selling feature imo. (even tho its already free).

There are just incompatibilities with diff VNC clients such as tight/esvnc/winvnc/etc. But for a small network like yours and starting with it, its perfect.

In XP you can set group policy to allow remote viewing without prompting the user. I know you used to be able to do this from one xp machine to another with Terminal Services Manager, but now it appears you have to run TSM from a W2K3 machine in order to remote control.

Edit: I think you just can't run it from the console session.

nice, thanks for the info about ultra vnc, i only use pc anywhere here at work and it really is kinda buggy and annoying. Users always know when I connect..

UltraVNC or Dameware, depending on the feature set you like.

I used Dameware at my last admin job because a handful of "clever" users would kill the PC Anywhere process "to free up memory". It was nice to be able to push the client and force it to start up without the user having any say in it :D

Take the computer out of their room.

Actually most people in the field of computer addiction and children(if not ALL) say to NEVER EVER have a computer in your child's room.

shit, if i didn't have a pc in my room during HS, i wouldn't have had half the head start I did on entering this field. plus the net connection was routed through my room (hurray for win98 proxies!)

You don't need a PC in your room to get that...you'd be just as well off with one in an office or living room.

can't you use a "/console" switch on RD to get the console view?

that would still lock out the console session - it wouldn't allow peeking.

True, but when i do have kids I will give them their own pc but have a proxy server set up where they can only visit the sites that I specify and nothing else! This is what I have to for the people at my job, most of them act like children too :p

Just give them a dell, it will break the second they try to do anything other than use notepad.
