Oblivion PC performance

Has anyone noticed oblivion to run progessively slower and slower further into the game? I can't think of any settings I've changed and it went from running great to both a lower frame rate and also some hiccups/"hitching"/possible swapping.

Have you been playing for a while? The guide at Tweakguides.com seems to suggest the possibility of a memory leak that occurs after a couple of hours of play.

Could this be the reason?

All too true...notebooks are getting better and better...but that's the one main area where they'll never be comPLETELY up to par with their desktop bretheren.
I wonder if there is much that can be done for laptop performance; I usually use my desktop for games, but it would be nice to have the option to take something like Oblivion with me should the need arise.

I've got a laptop here with a 2.4GHz mobile Athlon XP, 1GB PC2700 RAM, and a 7200RPM 80GB hard disk...but the darn ATI Radon x300 that uses 128MB of shared vRAM totally kills what would otherwise be a pretty nice gaming computer.

Are there any video cards that fit into a PCMIA slot I wonder? Just about anything would be an upgrade from this thing (even one of the better FX5200's).

Are you in oblivion (IE through the oblivion gates) alot? I've noticed hiccups and slowing a bit in oblivion the laval and fire jets etc seem to take abit more powa!

The game does have a memory leak, but what I am talking about is it running slow from freshly starting the game or even from a fresh reboot...

I'm post oblivion gates/main quest. It seems to happen in areas where it ran fine before.

I guess I could try starting a new game to see if performance is any different... meh I'm done with the main quest/guild quests so not too much else to do at this point.

Mine runs pretty crappy. Im on medium-ish settings with the rig in my sig, just not the overclocks.

Try a HD defrag? Also check your processes running. Maybe you caught a trojan or something else is eating up cpu/mem capacity.

I'm not gonna deny the fact that that might ever happen (even though I really doubt it would)...but PCMCIA video cards aren't really a reality. Unless it's a very recent notebook, there's not typically much of anything that can be done when it comes to your graphics...buy a new laptop if things are really hurtin' and you need it for gaming on the go.

I've been through the basics several times over.... Everything else seems to be running fine. Just moving all my savegames over to a new folder and starting a new game made it run a little faster. The menus/inventory and now completely responsive again, but still some hiccups outdoors.

Very strange...hopefully this issue becomes more widely known (assuming more then a couple people are experiencing this) and something is done about it if possible. If you're able to move your savegame files and start fresh to see everything responsive again it does point to something other than basic system maintenance...and hopefully we find out what it is sooner rather than later...as it won't be too long now 'till I'll get to fire up Oblivion for myself. :D

After some mad tweaking I'm happy with my rig's performance. 1280x1024 with HDR, most sliders turned all the way up. It'll dip to the mid-teens in some places but I can live with that. The only thing that irks me is the studdering when loading new areas. I guess I should stop looking to upgrade my video card and look at getting a 2GB kit of RAM.

I'd be doing just that in your position...it should help clear up that skipping in new areas from what I'm reading. Best of luck to you.

I'd feel really dirty if I upgraded just for a single player game :D

I'll upgrade in a few months probably.

I did get a nice little performance boost by managing my swap file(s) better. My drive setup:
WD Raptor 74GB
2xMaxtor 300GB/16MB SATA(non-raid)

I have my OS on the raptor and oblivion on the first maxtor drive. I had it set up initially so I had a swap partition on each of the maxtor drives, about 768mb each and I had a swap file set up on each of those seperate paritions so the swap file didn't get so fragmented. I got rid of the swap file that was on the same drive as oblivion, defragmented my raptor and added a swap file to the raptor.

Less stuttering now. Also I experimented with the multithreading tweaks... It seems like I may get less stuttering with them OFF, but I did confirm that I get a better frame rate with them enabled.

Cool, thx for the info...good to know, 'cus that's something I don't usually pay much attention to.

Yeah, I'm getting frames of like 30 with an X1950XTX with all shadows (Grass, trees, and self) turned on.

I'm holding off replaying this game until I get a decent videocard.

Even with a X700, the game was freakin' breathtaking. Can't wait to see how'd it look with a 8800 or something.

I think you forget, he was looking at the ground in a clearing :p

That's what I did. I often make the mistake of crankin' detail levels to the max before even tryin out a game. Then I can't play it on anything less cause I've been spoiled. It sure was pretty with an X19, but once you get in a fight in the forest...

Quad-core C2D 3.8GHz and 2 BFG 8800GTX's (liquid cooled) rock to the EXTREME!

Lol! You're nuts! I'd do the same if I had the cash tho. :p

You better believe it! I have an Asus Striker on order! And my back-up PC has an 8800GTX in case my main one decides to bite the dust early

This thread is a little dead. Hmm....

Get out the Defib kit! Charge to 4000 and ramp up the AMPS! STAT! *BZZZT*

It's been bumped into life! Congratulations gentlemen another job well done. ;)
