Well I just got Oblivion and I installed it and everything ran smooth at the menu (ofcourse). Right when I get to the character creation screen the INSANE fps lag started. and as you can see my PC isnt really ... that great ... P4 3.0e 768 mb of ram...

GeForce FX 5600 256MB .... extremely sucks I cant play Oblivion ... even on LOW settings Im so depressed because I REALLY wanna play grrr

Get another 128 stick of ram and a geforce 6800 and you should be good to go. That sucks man :(

Well, Im probably just gonna build a gaming PC soon somone givem some info on good stuff thats CHEAP and that will run any game out right now on full

Ahh, sorry to say this (I'm in the same boat) but stuff that will run any game on full is not cheap; end of story. If you don't want to spend a lot of money you don't have to, the level of performance will be fairly good. But you will have to compromise on some details, such as the resoltuion or detail levels. Cheapset way: get a 6800GT 256MB card (AGP), another stick of 512, and you will be able to run most games fairly well. Depending on where you get it from, it will cost you around the 400$ mark, give or take.

Actually you can do it for under $250. Get a 6800GS for ~$170, and see if you need more RAM. If so, get a 512MB stick for ~$40.

If I were him, I would go for teh 6800GS, its a bit cheaper than the (now discontenued) GT

I'd get a 7600gt, apparantly has performance close to a 6800 ultra, newegg has an msi 7600gt for $185. Theres not much difference between 1gb and 2gb of ram in oblivion apparantly(at least according to a [H] member) so you could get a 2x512mb kit of value ram for about $65. You can get a socket 939 mobo with pci-e for 60 bucks and a a64 3200+ for $150.
So far about $460. After that you have drives, case, psu, and OS.

cheapest way would be to get an xbox... you can be sure the 360 will play ALL games on HIGHEST quality until it's replaced (xbox 720 anyone? :D ) and it'll only set you back $400... you spend $400 on your PC now, and in 2 years you'll have to turn down your quality to LOW again to be able to play games

i'm in the same boat... but my PC is only a 2100+, 9800Pro, and 1GB DDR... top of the line 3-4 years ago and now it's hopeless while my 4 year old PS2 still plays everything at full graphic detail

Hmmm, your system specs are above what the minimums listed on the website are... you would think it would run smooth at a lower resolution and low settings at least.

I have a P4 2.4 with 512 megs of ram and a Radeon 9500pro... which seems to be to be a bit slower than your system other than the graphics card... I wonder if I should ever try.

XBOX 360? :) Probably not the best time to upgrade your PC with unified shaders around the corner.

Obviously the only rational solution to your problem is suicide...

The FX card is your problem. It's utter crap and cannot render properly and has been discussed a ton on the ES forums. Get a new card, heck even a 6600GT will do, and will will be able to play smoothly on mid to high quality . Add another stick of 512MB as this does need 1GB of ram at least to run smoothly.

Damn, I hate your life too! :p

Really, though it looks like what is holding you back is your video card its got the enough ram on it but the GPU just doesnt support alot of the cool things that make the game run smoother. I hear the new 6600's run even better than the older 6800's and they are pretty affordable, especially if you pick one up on used market. I dont know if there is a 6600 AGP card but you should bite the bullet and get a PCIe motherboard.

You're stuck with AGP. Get the 6800gs or the 7800gs. But, 6800gs is probably the better deal.

Considering all of the PC hardware/software changes that aren't more than 6-7 months away, I'd avoid spending the money on your PC unless you want to have to spend that $$$ again next year. It's one of those odd transitional times for PC's, and I'm right there with you although my 6800GT (AGP) will hopefully suffice until next Spring.
I'm with the people that suggested the Xbox360. You could even go after the low-end core package for $100 less. Considering the odds of a larger HD being available in a few months and the other items all being available a-la-carte, it's no longer THAT bad of an idea, especially if you're not using an HD-TV.
You could return your PC copy and pick up the 360 version and you're set.

Just buy a 360 and then play it on the highest settings possible :)

They are telling you to buy an xbox360 rather than spending any money on your PC. A viable solution for some. FPS addicts etc, not so much.

Ill just save and slowly get a new PC piece by piece

That won't work. You'll find yourself buying newer stuff to fit with outdated pieces of crap. That's computers man. If you want to play the latest games, especially the powerhouses like cod2 and oblivion, you can't spend $1500 2 years ago and expect for it to last. I just suggest you get a 360.

Agreed. You can't really do that effectively, especially with changes in chipsets and especially with the "death" of AGP. You could buy a PCIe mainboard to be ready, but it'll set you back $100'ish and won't help much at all. Not to mention you'd need a new video card, too. The cheaper ones will be dated within a few months and would be a waste. More expensive and effective ones will set you back $300-400. You then still need more RAM (and likely new RAM) in addition to that. Your processor will be viable for only so long, too.
Either save you money for a total overhaul (or new PC from an OEM), or buy a 360 and worry about that next year.

don't get a 360.. wtf.. your problem is the video card.. that card is a gigantic pile of human excrement, and not worth throwing at your enemy, let alone putting inside your computer.. buy a new video card and a stick of ram.. and you're done.. From what I can tell, you want to play Oblivion.. don't worry about new and faster stuff coming in the next 2 - 4 months, because if it can play Oblivion now with the minor upgrade, then it will in 2 months and 4 years... in that time, save a bit each month and build yourself a new computer in a while...

Yes I know this is the best advice you've heard yet.... thats why I posted it.

:p

I must have metioned this about 1000 times on this forum (well, ok, 3 times ;)), but you can get the Asrock P4DUAL as seen here:-

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=102945&_LOC=UK

which will run you current CPU (It should be socket 478, yes??), allow you to use an AGP card or, should the urge hit you, a PCI Express card. You can have the best of both worlds :D

I have already mentioned this card to 2 of my mates and they have both put it in their machines and have had no problems with it. One has (my old) 9800pro in his machine and he will shortly be upgrading to PCi E, the other has bought the Mobo to go with a 6800GS that I recommended. The board has overclocking capabilities (albeit limited, but should still get you to 3.4-3.6 comfortably), and is better than upgrading a CPU that really isn't holding you back anyway.

Worth taking into consideration

Well WTF do you expect. Sorry to be blunt, but you have a Graphics Card that is 5 Generations old, plus, the 5xxx series completly sucked anyway.

This is a game on the bleeding edge of computer hardware, Top of the line graphics cards have a time running this game now, much less 4 year old hardware....

geforce 7- geforce 5 = 2 generations old, yay math.

If I were you I'd go buy a $400 360 and morrowind.. it will cost you at a good amount to run it well at your current level

my gaming pc is coming along SLOW.. dual opty, 7900, etc.. im seriously tempted to just go buy a 360 so i can play oblivion.. and not deal with having to upgrade anything.. then get the ps3 when that comes out..etc..etc.

which is sad, because i've always been anti console. just seems like the better idea now. kind of like if dell released a 60% off dell XPS coupon.. i'd go use that instead of building my own sick rig.

just my 2 cents, and something to think of

I know!!!!!!! i want to play too!, but im worse! A 9200SE! yeah.........stupid budget comps..... :(

Well, according to your sig, you bought an X-fi (waste of money) but still have the 9200SE... hmm... not really seeing how it's budget with a $200 sound card in there.

wow I'm glad I don't have such HUGE problems in my life  If thats the worst thing about your life consider yourself lucky.

If you don't want to buy a 360, and don't want to spend to much money, grab another 512MB stick and a 6600GT and be done with it. Thats the easiest thing to do, to be able to play the game reasonably well but also to not spend too much money. Save it for when you really want to upgrade in the future.
