Hey guys I just purchased a 6800 GS and want to know how to upgrade it on a machine with onboard video. I have upgraded before, but it was a card for card, not card for onboard, so I want to make sure I do everything correctly.

Basically my computer specs are these

AMD X2 4200+
2 Gb DDR SDRAM
Onboard nvidia 6100 (it uses 128 mbs of my memory so i don't have quiet 2 Gb but 128 less)

I just want to know every step if possible in order from 1 to whatever on how to succesfully and correctly get rid of the onboard card, get my 128 mbs of ram back, get rid of the old drivers (I have driver cleaner pro), install the 6800 GS, get the new drivers.

Also, my mobo is a nForce one so I don't know what will happen if I run driver cleaner pro, will it erase those drivers because they are nvidia ones too? or will they only delete the display drivers

Thanks.

Put 6800GS in the system and make sure to attach power to the card. The moment you power up go right in the bios. Del, Look in the bios for video options, make sure that it's set to external pci e card. Look for shared memory and make sure it's disabled or set as low as possible (that is the 128mb your missing) :p

I don't need to do anything else because its NVIDIA to NVIDIA? Just do that and I am good right? NO reason to do the other stuff?

One more thing, when I go to control panel/add/remove to delete the old drivers in order to install the latest ones, it says that I have other nvidia drivers and it makes me choose what I want to uninstall

these are the options:

NVIDIA Display Driver
NVIDIA Ethernet Driver Components
NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management Driver

My question is where can i get the other two drivers?

I have a WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER 2005 with dual core AMD 4200+ (is this 64 bit). Can youy link me to the other drivers or is that all in the graphics driver. THanks.

Just remove the display driver. There should be an option to remove only the display driver. Otherwise you can download those from nvidia too. You seem to have an nvidia nforce chipset.

Ya i Do, its just that i don't know which option is right for me from there website. There's so many. I am sorry for sounding so new, I am not very experienced with this sort of stuff, and I really appreaciate your prompt replies.

If it helps I have a Dual Core AMD 4200+ with Media Center Edition 2005 (I think this is a 64 bit system right? so I need those driverS) If you can help me find the right drivers for me that are realted for my nvidia stuff id appreciate it.

No, windows Media center eddition is still 32 bit like windows XP. Your processor just like mine is a 64bit cpu. What you wanna do is click download drivers, geforce & tnt 2, then windows xp media center eddition and hit go. Click primary download site under us english (left) then then follow along through the license agreement.

that's right. Install that driver and you should be good

Enjoy your new card dude

Ei man thanks alot, I appreciate all of your help. By the way, what kind of performance should I expect from this machine overall? I mean coming from a p4 1.5 Ghz 512 Mb and a radeon 9550? I hope I can play everything on high with good FPS. The reviews used similar systems and achieved good results, hopefully so will I.

Well I wont say that you can play everything high but you definitely can play just about anything medium. There are a few games out there that are brutal even on a sli or crossfire setup. ;)

Ok so I just went into my BIOS to see if I can find the integrated graphics for tomorrows upgrade but I didn't know which one it was. I went into integrated peripherals and these are the options that I wasn't sure on 100 percent.

Which one of these is the onboard video card?

Onboard 1394
OnChip USB
MAC Lan
Onboard FPC Controller
Onboard Parallel Port
Parallel Port Mode

Oh and I have Phoenix BIOS.

Thanks

None of those are the onboard video card. When you plug the new card in you may have more options in the bios. You might also find it in other menus.

Ok guys thanks for all of your help so far.

I just received my new card and immediately opened my computer to hook it up, but unfortunately i noticed that my powersupply only has place for one more of those white 4 pin connectors, while the graphic card has two white head 3 connectors.

Does this mean that I can not connect the graphics to my powersupply since I don't have another white thing to connect both? I called the eVga customer service and the guy said I should just try with one but I don't want to risk it yet. I was wondering if it would work if I just connect one of the white connectors instead of two (if worst comes to worst I can always unplug my DVDRW, but I DO NOT want to do that).

At the moment I have a 300 Watt Bestec powersupply and I have these things connected to my computer

DVD RW/CDRW
DVD ROM
TV TUNER CARD
The Phone Jack card
Ethernet Port
HardDrive
9-1 Media Card Reader
NO floppy
and everything else that is connected to the computer

PLEASE reply quickly, I really want to be able to game by the end of the day. Thanks in advance.

Try witn only 1 white connector (it's called molex type connector), if it's not enough, your card would beep like crazy, but dont worry, it's just an advice that not enough power is going to the video card, nothing bad will happen just turn off the PC. If that's the case unplug any DVD Drive or something else and plug it to the power adapter for the card.

But if the card doesn't beeps like a little bitch, you'll be doing just fine. ;)

Thanks for the reply, oh and I forgot to mention what model it is.

It is the eVga 6800 GS superclocked edition with 490/1100 thats why I am a little hesitant. It's factory overclocked, I wonder if that will make it need more power than a regular one.

Really, all you have to do is plug the card in, plug power to that card, and then pulg the moniter into the new card. If you dont mind a few MB of ram missing, you'll never have to touch another thing! Drivers will auto detect the new card, and you wont have to mess with that ether.

Trust me, I'm running both a 6150 (onbord) and a 7800gt here.
