I'm looking to build a new rig in the next month and I'm in the process of buying parts. My budget is about $300 for the video card. I currently own an XFX 6800GT and it hasnt given me any problems from day one. I'm tempted to buy the XFX 7800GT (this is the green one) but after reading some comments on the XFX forum I'm not so sure. I've read the EVGA forums as well and they also have horror stories about their cards. Could be that all video cards have problems and XFX is not special in this case.

One thing that I noticed is that XFX is stating that the PSU must have 24A on the 12V rail. Maybe the fan they use has some special requirements, I don't know. I've seen that alot of the complaints involve someone replacing the card with an identical one and still having the same problem. Unless the majority of the cards are bad then I'm tempted to think that the problem is not the video card in that case.

Has anybody heard of the amp requirement for the 7800gt or is this just an XFX thing?

I have that card (green one) and a CM 450W Real power, with no issues at all, good card, all manufacturers have problems now and then with their products, I think is just bad luck.

I recommend it. :)

I have the black one with the 6 pin so the same one (but diff) you are looking at and no problems what so ever and I have a Antec Truepower2.0 430. No matter what brand you look at there will be horror storys.

I have the black one with 4 pin molex adapter and its works as stated except the fan speed is stuck at 100%. I'm waiting for the vf900 to be released and take care of that problem.

I think all of these overclocked cards can have problems now and then since they are being pushed past the reference specification. And I don't know how much stress/stability testing these manufacturers do before releasing each card, but this is probably where the problem lies. The small percentage of cards that have problems after they are sold doesn't justify a more lengthy testing procedure. And all of these video card manufacturer's forums are gonna be all problem related no matter what. I wouldn't hang out on one...

The power supply issue stems from alot of people with generic power supplies rated at high wattage. Check the power supply section to see how many of these generic psu's choke when trying to reach their rated wattage. XFX's specified power supply rating are high because this is the number one issue when someone is upgrading their GPU.

I'd stick to buying a card that follows the original Nvidia reference design, they seem to overclock better if you looking to do that in the future. I like eVGA's warranty on replacing the stock HSF. But XFX and eVGA seem to be very respectable manufacturers so you can't go wrong with either.

I just made this very same upgrade and I'm very pleased. Went from an XFX 6800GT to the XFX 7800GT (not the black one, though). Using an Enermax Liberty PSU and it runs beautifully. Of course, I replaced the heatsink and fan with a Zalman since the stock fan was louder than a lawnmower. Getting great temps as well. Unlocked the pipes, overclocked the card a smidge, and basically turned it into a GTX. No artifacting, power issues, or even a temp increase.

its too bad we only hear about the horror stories dealing with everything

Been using the green one w/ 6pin PCIe connector for about three months now without issue. Can't complain :)

Id love to hear on how you unloced these 4 extra pipes on a 7800GT

and a seperate post saying i love my XFX 7800GT and have "ZERO" problems (even when i had my Thermaltake 420W purepower where the 12v rail was 18A) Im now using the Enermax liberty 620W.
