Is there an open source port of Active Directory?

I was wanting to play around and make a small domain at home. I do have some 2003 server discs from school, but they are only good for about 3 months. I don't want to have to mess reinstalling every few months and I'm not going to try and crack the activation code on it. I want to keep things legal. I was wanting to know if there is an open source version of Active Directory that I could use? Does such a thing exist and is it any good? I do have XP Pro on my computers so I can connect to a domain.

Not that I'm aware of, nor should there be.

Think about it. MS... Server... Open Source... Not going to happen.

You will need a copy of S2K or S2K3, if you are in school, check there. Otherwise, get ready to drop some $.

S2K3 is going to hurt the wallet no matter where you get it. If you're in college, pray they have a version you can get from them. Otherwise you're looking at several hundred $$$$'s.

I got a free copy, 25 CAL. *shakes butt*

MS was giving them out free for a couple of months in their S2K3 classes. 1/3 of the class just paid for the class to get the 25 CALs and didn't stay for training. It was the cheapest place you could get them for a while, the cost of class <<<< cost of 25 CALs.

SAMBA!!!!

It is free, will work in Linux and Windows I believe

Samba 4 that just came out is suppose to have better Active Directory support

I probably shouldn't have said port in the title. I meant an open source copy of AD. I was wanting something similar that would work in linux or windows, without the huge cost. I can't pay that huge price for server and my college doesn't have them. In my server class, the books came 180 day Evaluation Editions of Server2k3 Enterprise Edition. If I really have to, I could use that and just back everything up and reinstall. I wonder how many times I can use those since I do think you have to activate them. I might see if my college have old non-evaluation copies that I could use. It's a small school.
