Good Boss Battles

I've been playing through Kameo on the 360 and it's a lot of fun. One thing i like about it is the boss battles. I haven't had a console since the Genesis, so i'm sure i've missed out, but it seems like on the PC most of the first person shooters that i generally play don't have any good boss battles. Kameos bosses remind me of the old Sonic games where you had to actually figure out the pattern of the boss and beat him in just the right way. I haven't beaten it yet, but so far my favorite boss in Kameo has been the ice queen bug thing that you have to take out its eyes.

Some games have bosses, but they're no fun. For example, I thought Doom 3 had some pretty bad bosses. The spider girl didn't take any thought at all, you just keep shooting at her like a normal enemy, except she has more health. The Guardian in hell was frustrating and annoying.

This will seem to contradict what i just said, but the boss battle in Quake 4 where you fight your old squad leader was ridiculously fun for some reason i can't really explain. Maybe it was having the guided rocket launcher, but it was so fast and furious that it got my heart pounding like a game hasn't done in a long time.

So what are your favorite boss battles, past and present? Anybody think bosses just aren't what they used to be?

Gunstar Super Heroes: the second to last level you have to fight every level boss (and anyone familiar with Treasure knows what that means....) and then you go right on to the final boss without any extra health or anything. Specifically, I thought Green/Seven Force in that game was pretty damn impressive, especially the second time when he keeps switching forms. Also, I still breathe a big sigh of relief after some of those Ikaruga bosses.

Another favorite was the Wind God, at the end of the first section of Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. You fight him in a huge open area and he spawns off all these tornados that not only pick you up and send you flying, but they also send lots of little enemies flying. On top of that, they'll catch any projectiles you shoot and send them whipping around. That boss in an absolute blast.

Resident Evil 4: Any of them...

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Vs. The Boss in the field of flowers.

Shadow of the Colossus... you cant get better boss battles then a game based soley around them. You also have God of War which just had some bad ass ones aswell.

I honestly cant say that many other games have better boss battles then them two since the rest just seem generic compared to them.

First two games I thought of when I read the title. Best example of recent games as well as Kameo. There are others but the fact that these two PS2 games come up immediately says something.

I'm stuck on the octopus boss in kameo - finally gave up yesterday and took a break. I keep dying as i kill him

I have to say the bosses for Ninja Gaiden were impressive. The Two that come to mind are Alma (the first incarnation,in the sanctuary) and The Spirit of Doku(second incarnation, spirit form)

I couldn't beat that son of a bitch on hard to save my life. Hell, I could barely beat him on Normal.

ANY Zelda game, but Zelda Ocarina of Time is tops when it comes to boss fights :)

And yeah, RE4 has some awsome ones, as do the Metroid Prime games.

I kinda had a feeling that Zelda would have some good ones. I'm looking forward to the Revolution so i can play all the old ones, seeing has how i haven't played ANY Zelda games...

They were cool but not particularly challenging. I watched my friend beat the whole game with only 3 hearts. He never picked up any heart pieces nor the containers the bosses dropped. Link To The Past was definitely harder than the N64 games (haven't played Wind Waker).

That seems like a good challenge, it took me forever to beat OoT.

I liked the bosses in Metriod Prime alot. I never got to play MP2 but Im sure their are some more great boss battles in there.

The boss in everquest 1.

In plane of.. The plane that had all the trash cans.

he was one bad mofo. Killed like 40-60 of us.

Ofcourse there was myself in ultima online until i got hacked.

On baja server i was king and killed 75% of the notorious pks until i became pk myself.Without cheating or using an auto fire and aim program.

Maybe its just me but I always enjoyed trying to figure out the weapon configuration in the old Mega Man games. Seeing which weapons worked on which bosses and then trying to win without. Or starting your game over on a different level to get the weapons you needed.

Er, What time in the games life? First planes were Hate and Air or was it Hate and Fear...

When it came out, I remember being really impressed by the bosses in Super Metroid. The first guy took up three or four screens. The mother brain was easy, but it was pretty cool the way the metroid helped you out. Love that game.

EDIT: Just read a few posts down; I don't know how I could forget the Contra series (especially the first one and Super Contra). Just played through the original with a friend of mine and have been humming that theme song for days.

I liked the never ending Metal Gear tanks in MGS2: SOL (or "Substance")

Resident Evil bosses are usually cool too.

RE Bosses are great. I remmeber contra bosses were kinda cool too. heh heh

Yoshi's island has good bosses.
Resident Evil 4 has good bosses.
Shadow of the Collosus has good bosses.
Sears has good bosses.

I hated that damn fight!!

Lol I'd run like a girl everytime she'd run towards me b/c 9/10 times she'd break my arm or throw me down ect.

But my fav. fight is the Devil May Cry (1,3) boss fights, I think every one in that game has its perks.

ninja gaiden (arcade)
Man that was the first time in my gaming life I said...Whoa (insert reeves here)

Serious Sam baby....the biggest boss of all :)

Almost any boss in Battle Toads for the NES.

Also, I really liked the Boss Battles in Pain Killer.

Also, the Dragon at the end of the "arena" area when you finally get to the bottom of all the pipes in Paper Mario 2. It is not a boss that you have to fight to beat the game, but it is the HARDEST boss in the whole damn game.

Devil May Cry 3, ALL of the boss fights. Particularly the Vergil fights. So much fun-and challenging.

yeah yoshi island had some good bosses hehehe...bring bacc memories...and also Mario World or was it super mario? where u have to throw stuff at browser and hes flying on that thingy yeah..and after u beat him u get princess bacc..heheh. lately no good bosses IMO

I also thought of God of War and Shadow of the Colossus when I read the title.

You're right about FPS's on the PC having crappy boss battles on the whole, but both Metroids on the Gamecube had some pretty awesome boss battles. Not really FPS's, but they still had some fun boss battles.

Metroid Prime and and Krauser from RE4 were great fights indeed.

Metal Slug, not so much for the battles themselves but the creativeness of the various bosses.

Bowser from Super Mario 64. I was in awe the first time (and second time, and third time) I played against him. It was the first time he really felt like he had a presence, and the atmosphere was just generally cool as hell.

The 13th colossus from Shadow of the Colossus is just about the coolest boss I've ever seen, though.
