so i decided to get a 165 from monarch (got it for $275) awesome deal.
CCB1E 0050VPMW
will try to overclock soon

it idles a little hot at 40c but then maxes out at 46c doing a torture test. i'm okay with 46 @ load (stock everything), but it seems that idles temps should be lower... what gives?

Opterons run hotter than Athon64's. What might be normal for an A64 probably won't be for an Opteron.

My opty runs at 37C idle. At 3025ghz @ 1.52v

okay, i guess i could just chill out a little... :) that was with the case open though. when its closed i get something more like 42 idle and 50 load... i'm guessing that's STILL ok. i'm just worried about overclocking the thing now

I idle at 27C too. Remount your HS, or bring the ambient case temps down. It should idle very close to embient, mine is at ambient.

you got a really good CPU bro! i just got my 165 from monarch a week or so ago, CCB1E 0550VPMW step

i idle around 26*c with mine at 1.475v running 300x9, full load, as in 6+ hours of two instances of Prime 95 is 44*c, pretty friggin good considering

here's something i did that may cause you to feel better about what temps your motherboard is reporting, i found out mine was reporting way off

ok..........

Vantec NXT-101 came today

so i got to looking at how much surface area there is to stick the temp probe on either the heatspreader of the CPU or the HSF base.........not enough.....

so i got one of those wild hairs and did this..........(if you are on 56k, you are gonna be hating me right about now....)

TADA!

when my motherboard sensor is saying 50*c, my temp probe is saying 40*C, the difference is smaller at idle of half load, but at either rate, i trust a physical probe 1mm away from the cpu surface as opposed to the onboard sensor, which are historically inaccurate

check out this article for a good comparison between temp probe and mobo sensor readings too

wow, interesting hab geek... funny, i have an abit mobo. but i don't know if i just want to assume that my proc idle temps are off by 13c. maybe i should try putting this proc in another board. obi, already remounted heatsink and temps are still way higher than ambient.

i have kn8 ultra, and it seems in forums that the mobo sensor it largely "right on." so this makes me very afraid, despite the articles above.

well, you know how unrelaible mobo sensors are for voltages.....and that a physical check with a multimeter is the only way to correctly measure a power supply's ability and tolerances.....so the same, in my thinking anyways, can apply to the temp sensors, they are just as susceptable to error as the voltage sensors, but thats just my take, use the info as you will or dont, but i personally have never trusted mobo sensors of any kind

Your temps are fine and right on par for stock cooling. The people who are running at 26 ambient with stock cooling must be in a pretty damn cold room. With an XP-120 and a 3700 SD, I idle at about 34C.

wow, what is your room temp?

mine is admittedly a bit on the cool side, 15*c, but its where i am comfortable, i just wear a sweatshirt around the house is all, i hate heat

that XP-120 should be cooling better than my Zalman, or at least somewhat, I've had two XP-120's back when I had a Preshott chip and they did very very well

My room is about 23 C. There is nothing wrong with my XP-120 or the way its mounted.

Yea its better than no beer of course, was just messin with ya. I love that Zalman.
