Just came into the bookstore today, went and picked up a 20" iMAC Intel with only the 256meg VRAM upgrade. Education discount helped make this a real nice priced system.

First impressions:

The system is fast, but not AS FAST as I was expecting. It is faster than my 15" 1.5gighz Powerbook, but when trying to open multiple programs there is some slow down. I am currently using the stock 512 Ram so I think that is holding me back.

Took a little less than 2 hours to transfer everything from my PB, but Photoshop CS2 will not load at all for me. It just says error and crashes, asking to reopen or report the problem. Logitech drivers do not work at all in this system, so I am unable to program the buttons.

Other than that, it is a new system. It is fun, and will work. Here are a whole bunch of pics of it and the external 2405FPW that I'm running with it.

If anyone can tell me how to span the top Menu bar across both displays, I would appreciate it.

hrm not as fast... not what i wanted to hear *grumbles*. have you used the previous g5 imacs? if so how would you rate this one?

I haven't used any G5, iMac or any other variant. I'm thinking this ram is slowing me down, turning extremely sluggish at times. Also worth noting is that there are far more incompabitilities than I expected.

Shapeshifter isn't working, many menu configurations for various input devices, and USB Overdrive wasn't working either. Ah well, it should get fixed sometime

Thanks for the pics... now I'm even more anxious to get mine! :p

It's on the slow-boat from Shanghai as we speak. :D

I'm drooling, but at the same time, I don't understand why people adopt new tech like this (completely new hardware for an apple) on a first release and expect it to work flawlessly. Personally I wouldn't touch one of those with my own money until at least the second revision. I LOVE my G4 12" 1.5ghz pb, but it is what? The fourth or fifth pb revision? By now, 99.99 of the bugs have been worked out.

Congrats on the toy.

Yeah seriously, you had to be living under a rock not to know that you were going to be dealing with a fairly unoptimized setup, lots of Rosetta slowdowns and bumps, etc.

Jobs even admitted so at his keynote, which must be a real pain for him :D

I officially hate you

I want a new Mac...my 20" G5 rev2 is feeling old.

And I want some of your cereal :D You lucky bastard

Such a sweet setup.
The ram is definitely holding you back, even my mac mini is starting to show its limits from ram: Lot's of programs all running [for example] media make the thing literally hit a brick wall.

Ok, CEREAL ENVY??!?? That's just sad... :p

Seriously though, thanks for the write up. I've been playing with the idea of getting an IntelMac but hearing about the incompatabilities is making me want to hold off for a while. I think I'll wait a little while longer now.

extremley sexy setup.....i'd LOVE to have that box!

Total is just...wow!

don't throw it....its bad for the HDD.....

i plan to upgrade to 1 gig of ram in the very near future, as well as a nice OC to 1.5ghz

I think it probably seemed a lil slow because of the RAM, my G4 really opened up with 2GB of RAM.

If Photoshop isn't running, try clearing out its preference .plist file or reinstalling it. Sometimes it's just a question of the app being overly fussy.

Its cool but i dont know why you would get such a sweet machine with anything less than 2GB of ram, since it is now concidered the high end standard.

512 MB was holding me back 3 years ago, I couldnt immagine running it now... I think thats your #1 problem

$$$ holdin me back. This setup is makin me wait for another week till I can get the extra ram.

Memory really helps on Macs. Even better is that iMacs can go up to 2Gb. Your spanning the two monitors right?

if you wanna use the 2405 as your primary your gonna wanna move the menu bar

you can't span it across two screens (that i know of)... but you CAN drag it over to the 2405 so it appears on that rather than the imac screen...

under display prefs. -> arrangement
then drag the menu bar(in the dialogue box, no the real one) to the other screen (should be the 2405)

Yeah thanks I got it figured out. This setup is definitely overkill for what I do, I don't need two screens so I think I'm going to drop back down to just the iMac.

ill take that 2405 off your hands for the price of shipping :p

my 17" CRT aint cuttin it in photoshop anymore

:edit:
also.....
ive always wondered this

how does the remote attach to the side of the imac?

It must be some type of magnetic link of some sort. You just lay it up against the screen in the right spot and it just holds.

cool :p thats what i thought, but i wasn't shure...

also...my offer on the 2405 stands :p
