Okay since this thread is so obscure that its unclear as to what you are talking about let have some fun.

I am thinking of a number between 1 and 10...

8

Nope the answer was 5 (hold up paper with 5 on it)
Good try though.

Okay so what are gass prices like in the states right now?

3.12 per galon :(

2:84 a gallon, until rita hits that is. Then back over $3.25 i am sure. 25% of our refineries are in the area she is hitting and most of them shut down. Fill up now.

First off, if this is a troll hook i got nailed.

Sparks. Currently as of this posting Nvidia has released there newest Gen while ATI hasn't. They own the ultra high end graphics scene. 7800GTX and 7800GT in SLI is the most powerful graphics setup out, both cost over $700.

Single cards are led by the 7800GTX, which are in the $450 range.
2nd Place is the 7800 GT, in the $350-375 range.
A farily close third place are ATI's X850XT and x850XT PE series. Both can be found from 280-330 now.
The x800XT and PE are 4th, at about the same price level, but their AGP availibilty makes them them attractive for AGP owners because Nvidia's 7800 series is ONLY PCI-Express.
The 6800GT IMO is above the X800XL, so i give it 5th place. $260 range
The next lowest card i'd recommend would be the X800 Pro, at $200, less than that from ATI.com.

ATI isn't losing as much money as some people say here because only a sliver of sales comes from the Ultra high end.
I think the 6800GT is the big money maker for Nvidia, it's a great card at a good price. I think it outclasses the X800XL slightly.

Everyone is talking about the 520 and how the X18xx series will do against the GTX. I think it will be the new ultra high end card personally. I think what is more important is that their XL Version soundly beating the 7800GT for the same price. More people buy in that range so there is more money to be made. Will be interesting.

Sorry guys this is no bs.

Max pc was doing comparisions in last issue between output of both cards.
ATI (which I have) has jaggies and wavies in explodied shots they posted in their
magazine. these were DVD playback images now NOT GAME snapshots.

the differences were striking.

Which Cards were they using? I dont have any of that crap.
I never ilike Max PC they give me everything the [H] Does at a much bigger cost.

A Llama wearing a purple tutu eating smoked gumdrops like da ATI....

A Three Toe sloth in a lime green business suit eating chocolate covered ham likes da NVidia....

So guess you need to decide which is better cause da Llama and da Sloth think they are right. And we know they are both groovy.

Ohh forgot a number between 1 and 10.....
6.666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666

EDIT: For DVD playback I have never noticed much a difference between the two. ATI's new r5xx series is supposed to have some new video features.....might want to look at that card when it is reviewed.

Maximum PC had to admit that their magazine is totally made on Mac G5's from start to end. They dont even use PC's to make the rag with.

HAHA Guess they should be called Maximum G5 ......

#1 Max PC is not a rag, at least IMO. I don't take their mag as word of gospel either. I did notice what the OP is talking about, there was a definate quality difference between ATI and Nvidia, Nvidia being better in the article. I would prolly say it's more of a driver issue, since hardware is similar and instructions are the same in many aspect, so it would be how the software uses the hardware, therefore drivers... Thta's what makes the article so sketchey, I mean on the surface, yeah it looks like ATI blows, but a new release of drivers could change that, in theory.

How were they testing the video output on the DVD? The decoder and scalers used have a huge impact on the end result, and if they didn't keep that the same I could see where there might be issues.

For one thing, they were using the (paid-for) Purevideo DVD decoder for the nVidia cards. I'm more interested in a "stock" comparison between the two. My bet is the difference would be far less pronounced.

MAX PC=AMATEURS
ATI SUCKS, allways been an nvidia guy. IMO the situation with ATI is becoming like the 3DFX. Nvidia will eventually buy ATI, this will happen the question is when?

Speaking as a humble HTPC enthusiast Nvidia cards are quite a bit better in both drivers and just the quality of image for media playback (not talking about games here), Nvidia has pure video for example, nvidia decoders etc. I used an ATi card for close to 3 years doing HTPC stuff and after making the switch was surprised at how well nvidia drivers catered to things other than just gaming.

So were they using Svideo out? Component out? DVI/HDMI out? Were they using NV's MPEG codec (it't not just for Purevideo  ) with both cards? Were they using FFDShow with the movies? What cards were they even using? Do they even list what DVD app they are using (yes, this does matter)?

Anyways points on NV having better quality: Here and here for why this is so.
