WRT54G Problems

So I went out and bought a wireless router a couple of days ago and from the beginning I've been plagued with random disconnects. The router is a WRT54G Linksys. I've done some searching on the internet and my wireless problems seem to mimick everyone elses very closely.

The wireless randomly disconnects no matter what I try (currently working my way down in MTU (1200) atm. Tried changing to different channels with no luck also.

I should also say, I've got two different computers hooked up to the router. The first is through normal cat5 straight to the router, the other is wireless. They're BOTH having this same problem.

Does anyone know how to fix this or am I pretty much screwed?

*It's using the newest firmware

could it be your cable/DSL modem? try disconnecting the router and go straight to the modem and see if it stops

Wireless disconnects are a common problem, but wired dropouts as well? Sounds like a defective unit, or conflicting settings, or heat problems (which i don't think is an issue with wrt54g v4).

Changing wifi channels won't help if the wired computer is dropping out too. If you are using DHCP make sure the client comps are configured properly with the 'obtain ip auto..' and whatnot.

To find out for sure, try setting the wireless mode to "disabled" and see if the wired computer constinues to disconnect. When disconnects do happen, can you still browse the router config? It might just be dropping the signal from the modem, check if the internet ip goes to "0.0.0.0". If you cannot use the web config, check to see what the lights on the front of the router are doing. If the power light is blinking it means its in the process of rebooting.

Just a few ideas, let us know how it turns out.

This router is fuxored. I finnaly got my too half ass work after a new firmware then an overclock.

Pre-version 4 firmware was buggy on that router, get the latest firmware...they fixed a LOT Of issues..at least version 4...I believe 4.20 came out recently.

Keep MTU at what is should be (1500 for cable/bridged DSL/PPPoA DSL, 1492 for PPPoE DSL)....MTU issues would not surface as disconnect problems, they surface with other symptoms..commonly SMTP e-mail issues.

Try putting a hub or switch between the WAN port of the router, and your broadband modem.

another option is to run a custom firmware. I am running DD-WRT and it's working nicely for me.
