ive been interested in them, never new exactly what was needed to create one.

would it be like a basic computer, but with a vivo or tv tuner card. with alot of disk storage space...

something that i could play mpegs and dvds through computer onto the tv....

well i have a shuttle set up

SS51G
p4 2.4B
512MB
CD-RW drive (the DVD-RW drive i use to backup my dvds is in my main pc)
20 gig HDD
9600pro with svideo out (to TV)
and a TV tuner but its not necissary

all you have to do is hook it up to the same network your main computers on with all your pr0n videos shared on your HDD....and just mount the drive you the HTPC andwatch your pr0n...erm..."movies" on your TV :)

thats how im doing it at least...until i can get enough money for BeyondTV or figure out how t set up MythTV while still being able to see my windows shares

o ok... so i dont even need a cd-rom for media pc...are there videocards taht are pci based that offer s-video or vivo

i wanna build one cheap...

what kind of hardware can i use...

i have this processor from an old hp
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819112141

theres only 128 mb of ram in this one... its SDram also.. that shouldnt be a problem it has a present tv tuner card... dont have any idea what.. it was given to me.im definately gonna switch harddrives... this one only has 4gb on its...the processor in the pc is 400mhz.. i figure i can rip the heat sink off and switch them...

there is also no agp slot

The first questions is what you really want to do with the HTPC you are going to build.

If you are going to record TV, then you will need a tuner card too. They aren't all that expensive ~$60 for a Hauppage PVR-150 when it goes on sale but there are others out there too.

If you don't plan on doing recording, then obviously, you don't need the tuner card. Also if you don't have a need to record, <shameless plug>, check out this thread:

i have a TV tuner card...

i wanna play videos that i have downloaded off the net onto a tv... and record

what i was asking is my sytem sufficient minus the harddrive which is too small

Celeron 733mhz
128mb SDram dont even know if its 133 or 100
tv tuner card
motherboard... i dont know...

this is an old emachines

would i need a vivo card? or would the tv provide me with that

vivo stands for "Video In Video Out" just to clear that up

all it does is let you have an input to your VIDEO CARD via svideo or composite (RCA connection)

tuner cards obviously have input....because of the tuner....it has CATV/Antenna/satellite input....and some tuners even have s-video/composite (RCA) input

simple answer...yes the TV tuner provides a "vivo" function

So i really only need a bigger harddrive, more ram... and thats it?and switching of the processor

If i build a system for just this use... should i get a motherboard with onboard video?

as long as it has svideo out.....
but you may want a standalone video card with *maybe* a better svideo out

Depends, you're going to need a DX9 level card and only a few new mobos have that. If you don't use a DX9 level card then you're going to need a fast CPU because MCE uses VMR9 for video rendering and if you're video card can't handle that then it gets off loaded to the CPU, this can cause image quality issues.
