ok i decided to build my first pc in 4 years. here a few things to keep in mind. i want be able to play doom 3 and not do any overclocking (i have the feeling i would mess it up.)

i want to put this video card in (i think its good.)
BFG nVIDIA GeForce FX5500 Video Card, 256MB DDR, TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "BFGR55256OC"

and i would like to put a really big "cool" looking fan on it.

i was thinking a amd processor that will be good for agaming, and a motherboard that will go with it.

Please give us more information. What's your budget? Do you have any other components you can use already (case/PSU etc.)?

Definitely get a GeForce 6 series video card. The FX will hold you back.

Like the other guy said, what's your budget?

dont have a budget yet. im just getting ideas of what i want. for the tower and everything in it i would like to stay as close to a thosand as possible. $1500max.

i do have a emachine w4682

it has

p4 2.6ghz
256mb ddr pc 2700 ram
crappy mx4000 64mb agp card
80 gb hd.

what could i do with this.? more ram or a different ram?
whats a big cool looking fan i could put on my video card i want to get?

$162 - Athlon64 3000+ (Winchester, socket 939) CPU
$169 - MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard
$122 - 2x 512Mb PQI PC3200 RAM (~$61 ea.)
$180 - Gigabyte 6600GT (PCI Express, 128 Mb)
$180 - WD Raptor, 74Gb
$60 - Antec SLK3000-B Case (no PSU)
$90 - Antec "True480Blue" 480W PSU
Total: $963

Find a data drive cheap (~$50 for 160-200GB). Plus CD/DVD players or burners, a sound card etc. There's enough wiggle room in the above that you can downgrade some things to upgrade others. I'd at least stick with socket 939 so you can upgrade the CPU in the future but everything else is negotiable.

[edit] Keep the eMachines as a second PC.

Really big "cool looking" fan, sounds like a job for the zalman 7700! cool fans, up up and away!

You do know that by replacing the fan on the video card, you'll void your warranty, right? If you're not going to be OCing, why do you want to get a "cool looking fan?" Unless you're getting a case with a window, there really isn't much of a point to altering components to "look cool."

it the size matters thing. ive always had a less than adequate video card. i am thinking side window with a blue light. i want to show it off infront of all my freinds.

looks like I missed the videocard part. I suppose there is no urpose in that then. But the 7700 HS is still a go!

Now that's what he wants when he says "Big fan"

this would play any game you throw at it. prices via newegg

and with about 240 dollars left in the "under 1000$ budget" you could probably upgrade the x700 pro to a x800 pro or possibly even XT

The unfortunate concession in including an X700 is that this is distinctly not a Doom3 card, which the poster specified as a game he wants to play. Replace the X700 with a 6600GT for any person wanting Doom 3 performance on a budget.
