Hey guys, in my desktop I have a wireless card and a normal wired card. I want to use the wireless card to access the internet and internet applications such as FTP and AIM. I want to use the wired card to access my local area network (which is also conencted to the internet) but I don't want to use it to get online.

The networks are NOT the same. They are completely different.
My goals:
Wireless = Internet Traffic Only
Wired = Lan Traffic Only (File Sharing Thats it)

Operating system Windows XP Pro
I also have the newest ZoneAlarm if this helps in restricting access to certain things.

Please lemme know how and if this is all possible :) :)

Thanks

Easy. Don't connect the wired LAN to the Internet. I think Windows will then default to the faster wired connection for LAN access. To be sure, though, you could put the wired IPs on a different subnet and hardcode your hosts file to use those IPs.

Out of curiosity, though -- why? If you're running the cable anyway, why deal with the extra security issues wireless introduces?

The wired lan is used by my laptop, and my roomate for wireless. (Wired, and Wireless, [Protected Wireless])

The wireless I`m using on the desktop is a neighbors wireless and it's on the desktop so it doesn't take up resources when someone elses uses my desktop and i`m on my laptop for internet browsing. I still NEED to be able to transfer files between laptop and desktop via the WIRED LAN, so I can't unplug it from the web beacuse the laptop uses that.

If that makes sense...

Neighbors wireless as in your using a network connection your not authorized to use? Need to clarify that.

Just because it's a neighbors does NOT mean I am not authorized; frankly it's really none of your business anyway.

Thus the mention of the word clarify and the questions mark. Fuggin twit. I think you answered my question though.

You could just manually assign an IP adress for the wired lan, and then leave the gateway and dns blank. This will force all net traffic to the wifi card, and use the IP addresses on the wired LAN to access other machines.

I`ll give this a try, I found a site on the web that said I needed to enable ICS but I`m trying to avoid that. I attempted to enter a DNS on the wired that was false so it would use the wireless and this didn't work heh.

ktwebb- I explained to you and I didn't have to, who are you the internet police. If you don't want to help then don't post.

The main thing is the gateway needs to be blank. That's how I control access where I work, just assign people no gateway(they still have DNS since it's an AD domain), and since they aren't admins on the machine, they can't change the settings.

You explained nothing. I'll comment as I see fit, thanks. If your stealing your neighbors bandwidth, or the ISP's for that matter, as it now appears clear that you are, then you should not be afforded any help. Clearly your going to get some anyway but I will put my cents in whether you like it or not.

You explained nothing. It does seem fairly clear now that you are stealing bandwidth, be it from you neighbor or the ISP. That is something I feel strongly about and will put my 2 cents in about it.

I don't have to explain to you, and if you are considered about bandwidth usage maybe you should become the war driver police

Thanks I`ll try this when I get the desktop working again :)

If you have permission, it's legal everywhere.

If you don't have permission, it's illegal in most (but not all) states to use a network. It's also standing forum policy that we don't accept threads that pertain to gaining unauthorized network access.

AFAIK, it's legal everywhere in the US to scan and identify networks (wardriving), as it's freely broadcast information.

Don't know about big trouble(if it's your neighboors house or something), unless your breaking into their computers and getting credit card information or something, but just don't do it because it's wrong. If it's a company's network that is a different story.

This has been discussed many times, and (again, in most states, but this varies) unauthorized network use is illegal. Saying "only if you steal CC numbers" is like saying breaking and entering is wrong only if you steal the car from the garage, too.

Not to be pedantic -- wait, no, I am pedantic.

Breaking and entering is only breaking and entering if there's an intent to commit a felony offense. i.e. If you just need a place to sleep, it's technically considered trespassing (in this part of the world, anyhow). (That's no comment on whether it's wrong, just that it's a summary offense if no felony was intended or committed.)

That being said, depending on where you are, sniffing networks may or may not be legal. But jumping on them and /using/ them is definitely illegal -- I'm guessing some sort of theft.

Ok, no network theft is going on! Would it have made more sense to say that I have DSL and Cable, and want to use Cable via wireless for the internet and the LAN is on DSL but I still want to be on the LAN to share files with ppl who use the LAN/DSL ?? But I don't want to use the LAN/DSL for internet :) How's that!! :)

It shouldn't be all that hard. All you really have to do is set your default route to be on the WLAN interface, and not on the LAN interface. Never having used multiple NICs under Windows before, I don't know how to do that -- can you set one network as the 'default' network?

dude, just drop it

he could be using speakeasy, and paying his neighbors for the internet... which is legal to do.. so just stfu.

When did I say it wasn't illegal? I said your aren't going to get in big if any trouble for jumping on your neighbor's wireless network. I have never said this was ok. Of course it's wrong but you know people do it all the time and I doubt if you walk into a police station and say, "I stole my neigbors bandwidth" that they would do anything. Now, this isn't right but that just the way it is.

Never said you did. I have no problem with war driving. Driving around seeing how many AP's you can pick up, hell even mapping them is fine with me. Tapping into the WLAN behind them is another story alltogether. As has been mentioned, this debate has been addressed ad nauseum and frankly is boring however if it looks like someone on here is trying to get help in stealing anothers internet connection then I tend to post my opinion about it. Nature of a BBS/Forum regardless of dipshits like stang. All you really had to do was say No, I am not stealing my neighbors bandwidth but being coy and subversive was a good indicator that was not the case. From the looks of it you may have gotten some help in this post and so be it. Another thing BBS's/Forums are about.

he indicated that just because it's his neighbor's doesn't mean he isn't unauthorized, and didn't feel like explaining for probably the 5th time what the story is. so who cares?
