Northbridge water cooling...necessary?

I am wondering how effective it is to water cool the northbridge chipset. The chipset is a NF3 Ultra as found on the MSI K8N Neo2 Plat and some other 939 boards. Will the stock HSF be enough in an all-out oc?

I've taken out the stock cooler from a Neo2 Plat before and found that the base is FAR from smooth and the thermal paste is poorly applied... :( Any input welcome

I took my northbridge heat sink off, cleaned it with alcohol and then put artic silver on. Ive gotten it up to 340 Stable. At 360 it stops posting. Im not too worried for this is higher than any ram can go.

340 is nice...

what kind of cooling on the cpu? oh, nvm, i saw it in your sig... which wc kit u getting?

I just set the multiplier to 4x and HTT to 3x and overclocked the bus. So cooling didn’t really matter at that point. (maybe it did though since the memory controller is on the cpu now). 350 worked but was a little unstable and 360 no post at all.

The parts I have already are a black ice extreme, TDX, AquaXtreme 50Z-DC12 pump, some tygon tubing and hose clamps etc. Just waiting on SNT systems to send me an aquatube reservoir then I will be ready to cut my case and install.

That's some nice components u got there ;) I guess I'll just keep the stock NB cooler since the Mem controller is in the cpu now and save myself $40 and get a OCZ mem booster....I hope those TCCD chips love high voltages :D

Just be sure you have the room for the booster. When I had the DFI I was unable to use it, seeing I had single sided mem and had to use vertain slots.

you may not even need the mem booster. Look at that anandtech article 305MHz 1T at 2.8 V. The neo2 plat goes up to 2.85V. That corsair ram is pretty expensive though.

Come on people! I hate to say this, but using the damn search. This question has been asked hundreds of times.

what was ur oc before cleaning and putting as5 on the NB?

Now i remember that the A64's have mem controller built into the CPU, maybe the NB wouldn't affect mem speed that much...

well yes and no. the north bridge can still be the limiting factor i think. this is something ive been trying to figure out lately thats why i asked. its gonna be a serious pain to take the MB out n put as5 on the nb but i may have to just shut up n do it n see if it helps.
