Would putting Arctic Silver 5 on my eVGA 6800 be a good idea?

This card has always idled at 63-64 degrees, and that seems pretty high. Would opening up the card to put AS5 be risky at all?

There actually seems something wrong with the card if it idles at that.. My card idles at 45 with AS5 on it.

That's not good (for me.) It has stock cooling. I remember seeing pictures of HSF's removed from the 6800's and a shitty quality thermal paste solution is revealed. Putting decent cooling would void my warranty huh?

Wont do any good if the HSF and or chip is concave.

If the HSF is glued on (epoxy) than you can remove it it, sand ff epoxy and go from there.

If it just has cheap compound then I bet the problem is not the thermal bridge but the actual contact itself.

in your temps you really don't mention ambient case temps, that could play huge in your video cards temps. Sure AS5 would help, but like said only on a flat sink, i recommend lapping the stock sink or just invest in a NV silencer 5. Lap that sink and use some AS5! be warned that there is a nice sized gap between the 6800gt memory/core compared to a typical cpu setup, so as heard around you do need a nice layer of AS5, about 3x a normal cpu application in my case, just make sure you get it just right, it may take a while, but you will see mad nice temps!

6800 GT (flashed to ultra) 400/1150 (nvsliencer 5)

idle 41c
load 51c

/cheers!!

I did it on my 6800gt. It made a 3C difference at idle with the stock cooler by applying AS5 only on the core. Thought you would like the "real world" reference to see if its worth it.

I have a 6800nu eVGA... the cooling paste they use sucks and they have some sort of thermal padding used on the memory. AS5 should help. I get 59C at idle wtih an NV5 and Im overclocked 380/800. My system was built to be silent so my temps are a little higher then most.. I never get over 62 when under a load. Long as you dont keep it under 70C it should be fine.. mine started acting a little funny at 70C with stock cooling but this could be becuase of the oc.

I know this thread is old..........but, I am going to try using AS5 on my eVGA 6800gt.
Airflow inside my case (wavemaster) was fine for my 9800xt but not for the 6800gt, so
I added a side panel fan to the window. This was a huge improvment on temps....At a room temp of 24c before modd, my load was 86c after an hour of rthdribl running almost full screen (so I could watch my temps in real time).

Now with the side panel fan, load temp is only 76c under the same conditions listed above, I always keep room temp the same while checking changes I have made.I should also mention that I'm overclocked to Ultra speeds and my cpu temp went form 59c to 52c under load, 42c to 34 idle.

Not bad for the price of a fan :)

My evga 6800nu use to idle almost around 50c with stock cooling and paste. I took off the cooler and noticed really bad qauality paste. I applied some as5 and tightened the stock cooler back on and noticed a 7c drop and now i idle around 42-44c. It's worth the 30 min to do this. Aslong as you tighten the cooler enough so it makes contact with the ram.

Just got finished running rthdribl1.2 for an hour, after applying as5 to core and ram . Core temp went down 6c, ambient temp is still about the same. Between adding side panel fan and as5 I have taken 16c off my temp using stock cooling. :D

At a room temp of 24c I'm at 70c

59C @ idle, seems kinda high, what is your case temp? With my MSI Nu's at 415/800 and the NV5 they idle 39 and 42 with it hitting 47 under load. Might want to check that you have everything screwed down tight.

I tried putting it on, but every tool I used just tore up the screws on the face plate of the card. The screws absolutely wouldn't budge. I don't think I'd ever buy another eVGA card again. Yeah, I know it would void my warranty, but I really don't care. Oh well.

well, i am sure it isn't 47 on load unless ur on water.. but anyways... try to add a fan on the side of your case pointing right at the v/c.... helps out alot for me..59 is too high at idle.. hehe

Yup what aZn plyR said about adding the fan to the side panel (if you don't already have one). I added a 80mm 3000rpm fan to mine aimed right at my vc and dropped 10c on load....and 5-6c on my cpu.

Just for the hell of it, this morning I removed the stock fan and put a vantec duel fan pci card directly under the vc. Temps went back UP 3C over stock fan :p . I would put the stock fan back on.........but in the process of removing it one of the screws broke off  . I just tested it by playing Halo for a while and it got up to 74-76c. (RivaTuner, room temp 25c, Ultra speeds)

Ordered a NV5 today....as installing it won't effect where the broken screw is ;).

i get 52 idle temps on my stock gt with nothing removed or artic 5. and i get around 70-75 C !!!! on load. (that scares me). But on my other system i got AS5 with a swiftech water coolng kit with AS5 on the memory dimms and i get a whole lot less with these stock heatsinks. I get around 31 idle and 47 load.
But i think adding that AS5 will help a few C lower. Go for it theres really no harm in it. Just be careful on what you do.
