My system i thought would be able to do much more....and especially with a $500 card...i have a x800 xt overclocked to PE speeds....(MY SYSTEM IS IN MY SIG)

17" monitor

Half-life 2 settings
(everything on HIGH)
Reflect world
4x AA and 8x AF
VSYNC enabled

Cat 4.11 settings
Vsync enabled
1152x864/32bit
4xTemporal AA
8x AF
Texture Preference: Quality
Mipmap Detail Level: Quality
Wait for Vertical Sync: Always On
Truform: Always Off

I use windows XP home but i turned off everything from themes to all the nasty memory hogging apps running in the backround windows services etc etc. Spyware NONE, All my drivers including winxp sp2 are up to date...antivirus and firewall ofcourse...defrag scandisk done etc etc.... soo im just using minimum system resources running in the backround.

Yet.... I still only get a average of 66fps in the CS stress test. If i disable Vsync i get average of 110fps but i get that nasty tearing that comes with having vsync off....so i leave that enabled...

Ingame fps i get max 75fps which makes sense because my 17" monitor's refresh rate maxes out at 75Hz....but it isn't constant it fluctuates allot at times dropping to 30fps which sucks! I really don't think i have a slow system at all ...anyone have any tips? to improve the frames without lowering IQ?

I wouldn't use temporal AA for one. Not sure what else would be causing it, tried re-install of drivers?

why not temoral AA? i thought it gave me better performance? also what about TRUEFORM?

Keep Trueform disabled. That will just rape your FPS even more. Use standard 4xAA instead of temporal.

And as the above poster suggests, HL2 is very CPU bound. OC it if you can a bit and you'll probably see an improvement.

Well i raised my agp aperature to 256 ..i had it at 128 because i had a 9800pro 128mb but since i have a 256mb card i raised it to 256. Also i turned off temporal AA and just used regular ...ran the stress test again and i gained 4fps ...better than nothing...but i still want to tweak more stuff like the "console" what do you guys suggest on in cs

cl_updaterate 30
cl_cmdrate 30

these ok? what other console commands can i use. I have a pretty fast cable connection i get about 700K upload speeds and overall connection speed is 2.5 - 3Mbps

HL2 won't have anything to do with those cvars. That will only affect CS:S.

you drop to 30 fps because using vsync will cut the frames in 1/2 if it cant hold 75 solid (which virtually no system will do on Source engine right now... meaning never drop below 75) enable triple buffering or disable vsync

Yeah i know...but what you guys recommend? for my connection speed?

I only change it if I notice problems. And I haven't, so I wouldn't know what to suggest :p

Interesting... does triple buffering used as a substitute for vsync? or there is still tearing up the ass with it enabled?

you could turn v-sync off and play at even higher settings like 16af, I don't mind the tearing as much as fps dropping to 43 because of v-sync but I haven't tried higher settings than 4xaa 8xaf.

No dude, you use tripple buffering so the frame rate, when it drops under the refresh rate, drops to whatever it would like to, not a fraction of your refresh rate.
It's for use with vsync, it wont do a damn thing with it off.

damn tahts horrible man.

here are my VST results.

gt@ultra 1280x960 4xAA 8xAF = 103fps
XT stock same settings= 136fps
[email protected]= 158fps.

on the ATI results trueform IS enabled.

in game halflife2, with Vsync on i get 100fps, because thats my refresh rate. lowest ive seen is 79fps, those drops occur when im blowing up a drop ship, but most of the time its a constant 90-100 when using vsync.

HL2 is heavily CPU dependant. Switch over to a high end AMD 64 system and your performance should be much better :D

Your AGP aperature size has nothing to do with performance. Go back in your bios and set it back to 128. I would try doing a clean install of your operating system, then overclock your cpu. For counter strike and HL2 you should try the Catalyst 4.12 beta's which are supposed to help performace a bit. At 1600x1200 4x 8x everything else maxed I'm getting 96+fps in the stress test, so something is wrong.

well i can get 200+ fps easily if i turn off vertical sync....the problem is i can't stand the tearing eventhough it isn't that much i still notice it and its just annoying....with vertical sync on i get 75fps max because i only get 75Hz max refresh rate on my monitor :( but i will try switching to the 4.12s ...i did notice a performance increase when i disabled temporal AA and just enabled regular AA.

1152x864/32 @75Hz 17" monitor
4xAA / 8x AF
Everything on High

I wonder if there is anyway of making my monitor compatable with even 85Hz....

Try tripple buffering. I think that might be opengl only though. It will add a third buffer to the video card so it can keep up with your screen refreshes. It also adds a delay -to the mouse- because it has more to pass through. I would recommend turning off vsync. You could try changing the max framerate to like 1 frame under your monitor refresh or 1 over your monitor refresh to help reduce the tearing. I get very minimal tearing on my game without vsync.

Well i upgraded from 4.11s to 4.12betas and wow performance has gotten WAY BETTER especially water effects and frames dont' drop soo low anymore! I can't wait till the official new cats to come out or hl2 patch!

hmmm everything is cool in your system ....you can upgrade for less money.

you only need new AMD64 CPU + new mobo (3500+ for about $270"You can OC it up to 2.6...that means $800 4000+ speed....with stock fan" and s939 mobo for about $140 )

Thats ALL !

Then See how will your X800 Rock n Roll

with vsync on your fps fluctuates from max fps of your refresh rate to a fraction of it, that's why it drops to 30

with vsync off you'll find your minimums much higher

vsync on fractions the framerate up

you either live with it

or live with the tearing

if you can force tripple buffering that solves the problem with vsync on, but eats up more framebuffer

I think his problem is fixed now.

umm this VST is in cs:s right? then nvidia should be winning ati in there.. not ati killing the 6800gt@ultra by 30 fps.... and does overclocking ur xt to xtpe really gains u 22fps? i overclocked my ultra from 400 to 440 core and memory to 1150 and barely gained 3 fps...
but maybe that's juss me..

I like playing CS:S and also am forced to turn on V-sync if I want the tearing to be completely gone. Limited by our monitor's refresh rates, sucks, 1280 75hz, 1600 60hz for me.
