Granted, I really wanted an excuse to do so anyways.......but is it just me, or does the game kind of suck? I mean graphics quality aside, I mean the game is freakin boring. Any hoo, just thought I would rant a bit. :D

Well what exactly did you expect? It followed the same gameplay path as DOOM 1 and DOOM 2 did.

The D3 engine however will be home to some major upcoming titles and its graphics and coding capabilities are incredible.

And you didn't exactly get robbed by upgradeing for DOOM 3 because now you have a machine that can handle the other games this year like Half-Life 2.

Personally, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is the game i'm waiting for. I played the hell out of Morrowind and i still do.

Have to agree. The game was way over hyped.

The gameplay may of been over hyped but the graphics were not. The D3 engine is beyond any other game engine out there right now.

Half-Life 2 has the gameplay but its not exactly the most visually advanced compared to the D3 engine.

But gameplay is where it counts. Gameplay is what keeps people coming back and replaying it. This is why HL2 comes out on top.

I didn't upgrade JUST for Doom3, although I wanted to at the time....I upgraded about a week after it came out when my 9700 pro died.

I haven't regretted getting an X800 pro VIVO (flashed 16 pipes 500/540) for a minute since, although I do question me sanity at blowing the money on it at times.

Unlimited graphical power when all these great games are coming out is WAY COOL! I ain't never had a top-o-the-line card when it was still top-o-the-line and it is NEAT!

If you can afford to do it, it's well worth it....either ATi or nVidia's top cards right now rock so damned hard it ain't even funny, you won't go wrong either way! :D

I just wonder what Doom3 would look like without all those shadows. Also did noone else find the shadow edges way too sharp? In real life shadows are always soft. In Doom3 they all have sharp edges. At least they do on my 9700 Pro.

Also I'm not sure it would work well for big outdoor environments - the entire Doom3 game was kind of cramped and claustrophobic and it remains to see if this is a limitation of the engine or a design choice.

I enjoyed Doom 3 because I treated it for what it was, a retelling of the original Doom games. Why does everyone act surprised by the way Doom 3 played, it was still fun, just a little old school.

I didn't upgrade just for doom 3, but if I did I would feel cheated as well since I bought it the day it came out, but stopped playing it a while ago without finishing it cause it's so boring. I think I got to level 15 or so. I'll finish it eventually, but there's really nothing drawing me back to it. The graphics are good, but not THAT good like eveyone seems to think.

It's pretty easy to find out, I think it's just "r_shadows 0" at the console to disable 'em and it does so instantly.

When I was playing it using my 9700 pro I bound some keys to turn shadows on/off just for the performance increase and because I thought it looked better without shadows in spots.

amen ..

Totally agree with you

I had a blast playing D3. Went "Mesh style" and ran it in the dark, alone, with the 5.1 surround blazzing. It was way better than I thought it would be from all the, IMO underrated, reviews it got.

I actually got a lot more bored with Far Cry. It's gfx didn't look nearly as impressive IMO, but it put much more of a beating on my hardware (in some of the outdoor areas where you can see for miles my fps would drop and hold steady in the 20s :( ). Add to that the absurdly loooong and repetitive missions and the crappy voice acting (especially Jack's) and I just never really got into it.

D3 was repetitive in some respects as well, but it was a lot shorter and did a much better job IMO of drawing the gamer into the environment so it wasn't as noticable. Plus the game is just absolutely gorgeous.... who can honestly say the first encounter with the Hellknights in the Delta Labs wasn't a jaw dropper?

So I don't feel ripped off at all. D3 was great, and hopefully HL2 will be to (getting it next week :D hopefully).

Doom 3 was a decent game. I certainly didnt upgrade my hardware just for Doom 3. I upgraded so I can play games at 1600X1200 and still pull down excellent frame rates. I even play with these settings online.

I had to upgrade anyways :p I don't feel "robbed" at all because I can now run the new released games with no problems now. Doom III potential is in a 512MB video card anyways. Once the 512MB video cards are out then we can finally see how the game looks without the heavily compressed textures.

Yep, Burning Grave, I remember you ranting about something on the Elder Scrolls Forums, But Oblivion is my MOST anticipated game right now, but Half-Life2 Collectors Edition, Doom3, Neverwinter Nights, TES3 and anything else will tide me over. (Guild Wars, WoW?)

Edit: Also I play all my games at 1152x864, with whatever AA or AF I fill like playing, but I honestly can say I can't tell really any difference between 2xQ or 4xAA on 1152x864 resoultions, maby I'm just blind, but I just upgraded from my old system because I could only play new games at 800x600 or 640x400 with details on low, sucky experience.

Wait wait wait now. We upgrade hardware because of gameplay or graphics because I could have sworn it was the latter.

I thought Doom 3 was pretty fun, and exactly what I expected it to be. It was a perfect time for me to upgrade too, since all the next generation games are coming out now.

I'm also pretty excited about the next Elder Scrolls game. I just hope it's more challenging than Morrowind was. I'm a pretty experienced RPG gamer, but I breezed through Morrowind and found it to be quite boring in some spots. Hopefully the next one will be better!

Played through it 3x so, no, I don't feel cheated in the least.

Just thought I'd throw my comment in here without reading the rest of the argument brewing in this thread :p

I upgraded for HL2 and other games, not D3 (thank god). I have played it, and it was indeed extremely boring.

The only thing I upgraded for Doom3/Halflife 2 was my video (got a 6800GT from a Radeon 9700 Pro). Absolutely no regrets (runs both games quite well and pads my performance for the next year or so). And I happened to enjoy BOTH games... :p

I can't wait to see what games come out based on the Doom3 engine. So much potential...

Mr.Dearthian

I didn't and I don't. My spin on this D3 thing is I really didn't expect much out of game play. I was interested in engine abilities. I am very interested in seeing a few more games based on it.

I think FarCry eats D3 lunch as it relates to game play.

On a side note... Think Creoteam and the Sam2 engine. It's gonna rock.

I'll agree with you on this note. Fortunately my rig was already set up for D3 as well as HL2 and Far Cry. My rig plays all 3 games flawlessly. I did however have to update my video drivers to play D3, the ones I had were kinda outdated.

whats funny is the people that overhype the games are you lot who sit there drooling over screenshots on forums all day

you all sit there and go on about how superior this new graphics engine/physics engine/lighting engine/netcode etc is going to be , work yourself up into a sweat and then moan when it doesnt live up to your expectations

no game is worth hyping , its just a collection of dots on the screen and not some supermodel giving you a blow job

I've yet been bored enough to finish Doom 3. The darkness makes my eyes tired and sleepy. I wish there was a code that can turn ALL the lights ON! I cannot stand that flashlight.

Pretty much it, I mean Doom 3 does not "blow" or "suck"... I'm sure there are far more games out there that don't even qualify as being "games". Just look at PC Gamer's half page reviews on games that get 10%'s and shit like that....

If graphics aren't impressing you (to all those anti Doom 3 HL2 fan_bois) all that much to the point that the *entire* game sucks, you might just want to go back to your old SNES.

I had planned an upgrade for doom3 and HL2 and I am just NOW getting around to doing it...so no i dont feel cheated :p

erm yeah , i guess so , i been playing computer games since the atari 2600

i just seen the "new revolution" of games that many times and been burned by them not living up the total virtual reality experience before, that i now take it all with a pinch of salt

roll on 10 years time when (hopefully) we get retina projected 3d displays with genuine realistic realtime physics/graphics/sound :)

I just don't understand how some of you guys don't like Doom 3. I built my new system just so I could play Doom 3, and also to play the future games after that as well. Since I have a regular Samsung LCD monitor, i'm limited to a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. However, the gameplay of Doom 3 just didn't disappoint, not to mention the graphics. Just thinking about future games based on this 3D engine is enough to make me drool! My only regret, is that I had to settle for a 6800GT instead of an ultra since I just could not find anyone with one in stock, or anyone who was selling one online that wasn't trying to rape you.

Doom 3 was an awesome experience, because it really sucked you into the environment and atmosphere of the game. I've beaten it twice now, and I can't say that i've been bored of it. What's so refreshing, is that it's just a simple game with simple gameplay that you can just enjoy without anything getting complicated. Let's not forget what is the best implementation of Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound of any game to date. Far Cry was a game that I thought was boring, as it just didn't make you feel involved. I havn't had a chance to buy Half Life 2 yet, but i'm jealous of you guys who have had time to play, and even beat it already. Of course, even if you don't like D3, it's just one hell of a game that helps you show off your gaming rig, and will probably be one of the most significant benchmarking applications for hardware to come.

Don't you guys remember the idiots that bought the 9700 Pro and called it their "Ultimate Doom 3 Machine"

People fucked themselves over on that one, because they were idiots.

My 9700 pro last me close to 3 years now. I resent that.

No... not really. The only thing I remember back then was that a 9700Pro was going to be a minimum requirement for Doom 3.

Fucked ourselfs over? The 9700Pro was the turning point for ATi...

I can't believe we get all these Doom 3 haters coming out of the closet just because a new game has been released. Well if you want to make things even more of a retarded argument, lets just add in the fact that Doom 3 made it to a smooth release date long before Half Life 2 was said to be released (after multiple delays  ) If anything, Carmack knows how to keep his mouth shut and just release the game when its done.

I would not feel robbed at all if I upgraded and played Doom 3. I have seen Doom 3 run on a 6800 Ultra... yes there are some areas of the game where the frame rate will drop well below acceptable.. but they were rare, and its was the game's fault. But other than that, the image quality and the frame rates were rediculously faster than my 9700Pro.

The release of Half Life 2 has nothing to do with this......I still play quake 3, and all I can say is thanks to Doom 3, I will have Quake 4 soon. I jjust wanted to say I was very unhappy with the gameplay in D3....and wanted to hear people's feedback....Thanks for everyone's input.

whether you like doom 3 or not, it shouldnt be wasted cash as hopefully there'll be some great mods for it soon ~_^
